“Hope, this is a bad idea.”

Lizzie’s not wrong. She’s her best friend for a reason.

Hope stares at the large garnet sitting in front of her, recovered on one of their latest trips for the school. It was their turn to take a break from Mystic Falls, lest people realize that they’re not aging the way they’re supposed to. One downside of being turned at seventeen is that you look seventeen forever. People don’t expect you to stay the same for a while. But jobs like this allow her to be productive in her time away. This one involves a jewel that is said to grant witches. Caroline presumes that there’s some kind of monkey’s paw attached, though there has been no proof of that yet.

“We don’t know for sure it’s a bad idea,” Hope hedges, trying to get around the implications. “The backlash is only a rumor. There’s nothing proven.”

“It’s magic, Hope. When has trying to get around the consequences for anything ever ended well?” Lizzie sighs as she stares her friend down. “Consequences got Landon into this mess. Because he broke a rule and had to pay the cost for it.”

“He never would have had to break that rule if—”

“If what? You hadn’t killed him in the first place?” Lizzie gives her another pointed look as she makes her way around to lean against the table the garnet rests on. “Or maybe if our friends hadn’t died trying to defeat Ken, or maybe if Malivore hadn’t possessed Landon in the first place? You can try to play the what ifs all you want, Hope, but Landon made a choice. It’s a sucky choice, to be sure, but you can’t keep trying to erase his choices forever. At some point, you have to accept them.”

“You don’t think I know that?” Hope huffs and walks away, turning her eyes towards the back wall. Part of her knows the garnet isn’t the answer to her problems. That her making a crazy wish and winding up facing the consequences isn’t what Landon would want for her when he got his humanity back. But that doesn’t stop the guilt churning in the pit of her stomach.

Lizzie reaches forward, giving her shoulder a squeeze. “I’m going to go out and grab a bite. You figure out what you’re going to do about this. Just…be careful what you wish for.”

The blond leaves the room, and Hope continues to stare down the garnet, weighing her options as she hopes she doesn’t make a huge mistake.

Lizzie returns an hour later, and the garnet is gone. Hope is sitting back against the headboard of her bed, and Lizzie raises an eyebrow at her friend. “So. You make your wish?”

“I thought about it,” she admits. “But then I sent it back to Caroline, like we’re supposed to.”

Lizzie smiles, before going to settle on the bed next to her. “You did the right thing.”

“I know.” Hope tries not to sound too despondent about it. “I just really miss him. I know it’s been years, but I can’t help but feel like what happened to him is all my fault.”

“It’s not your fault. It’s just what happened.”

Hope knows Lizzie is right. That choices were made on both sides and Landon made his choice fully aware of the consequences. But every so often, the grief becomes too real that she can’t help but feel she has to fix it. She shifts to tip her head to rest on Lizzie’s shoulder with a sigh.

“But this is progress, right? I’m not trying to make the big choice for everyone and just letting what happened happen?”

“It is very much progress. When the bakery is open tomorrow, I’ll buy you a cookie.”

Hope laughs, before glancing up at Lizzie with a small smile. “Have I told you lately that you’re a superb friend?”

Lizzie grins. “A girl never tires of hearing it.” She reaches over and squeezes Hope’s hand. “But you’re not wrong in wanting better for him. We all do.”

“I know. One day we’ll figure it out.” But for now, she just has to figure out how to live with the guilt she may or may not have earned. “But for now, I think I could use a drink. How about you?”

“That sounds amazing,” Lizzie nods, before getting to her feet. “Let’s do it.”

Hope turns to follow her friend out the door, prepared to have some fun instead of wallowing in the past. That, too, is progress.

She just has to remember that she makes a bit more every day.
