“Have you ever been tempted?”

Sophie tears her eyes from the golden artifact in front of her, sealed in one of the secure museum cases to the man standing next to her. Harry Wilson has a way of asking sincere but probing questions in such an off-hand manner. Likely his skills from his time as a lawyer, but she wonders if he considers his lines as carefully as she does. What will make the most impact, but seem the least concerning?

He likely doesn’t have to think about these things as delicately as Sophie—with her biggest secret out in the open, it’s better to be direct. But he has a certain sort of charm to him that benefits him, makes the probe less invasive.

She’s seen Harry in court, after all. She knows he could be much crueler about it.

“Tempted by what?” she asks, tucking her hand in his arm as they walk to the next exhibit.

“All of this?” he gestures to the surrounding museum. “Going back and pulling off one last score?”

“Oh, I was.” She tips her head to the side. “Remember when Ian Blackpool was forced to resign in shame from IYS?”

“I remember that. I worked on the cleanup from that.” He tips his head to the side. “Was that you guys?”

“It was,” she smiles. “But about ten years before that, I stole the second David. I knew Ian had the first. So when the opportunity presented itself … I conned the team into helping me do it. Played on my future husband’s grief for his son—it was not my finest moment. And we, unfortunately, got caught.”

“But Blackpool still went down.”

“Not until we started working as a team together, and I had to do some apologies.” A beat. “I’m not very good at apologies.”

“And here I thought you were good at everything.”

“Everyone has their flaws,” she laughs. “But in the end, I think I learned that whatever temptation comes up, whatever my motives may be—they’re not worth the cost of my family. Hardison, Parker, Eliot, now you and Breanna—they will always matter more than any score.”

Harry nods, stopping in front of another painting, studying the golden frame. “Sometimes I think of all that people like Hardison could uncover. The people that I worked for, and the ships I could sink. It would cost me all my credibility as an attorney, but … sometimes I’m tempted. To do what I used to do, but in the opposite direction.”

Sophie nods, continuing to study the art. “What stops you?”

“My daughter.” He glances over with a smile. “None of it is worth costing me her. I think we both know that I dealt with some very dangerous people.”

“You did.”

“And…I don’t think I’m done here yet.” He glances over at her with a small smile. “I think I still have more to learn.”

“Well,” Sophie smiles as their mark comes into view. “Shall we get started? See how much you’ve picked up on?”

He swallows. “You know, I’m still not great at the lying part.”

She laughs before turning to lead the way. “Don’t worry, Mr. Wilson. You’ll get the hang of it.”
