“Okay, team.”

Waverly paces in front of the group of them, hands clasped behind her back. She eyes them each as she passes, taking stock of known strengths and weaknesses, before turning back to them with a serious expression on your face.

“I know we’re riding high on our recent wins, but that doesn’t mean that now is the time to get sloppy. We have to make sure we stick the landing for the championships, which means stay in your lanes. Jeremy—science and pop culture, Doc—history, dentistry, and famous divas—”

“My love for Adele has its usefulness. It’s true.”

“And I’ll handle the literature and ancient history stuff.”

“Yeah, this is all well and good,” Jeremy sighs. “But it’s going to do nothing if they throw us a curveball about bees again. The girl on the Rock-n-Rollers was like a bee savant.”

“I really did not need to know that bees have five eyes,” Waverly frowns as she crosses her arms in front of her chest. “The extra three just sit on the top of their head like some kind of weird alien stare.” She pauses. “Are we sure Sara came back okay from her run in with the Beekeepers? She enjoys rambling off some weirdly specific information about them.”

“Actually, she’s deathly allergic,” Doc supplies. “Learning everything she can about them provides her comfort. Like studying an enemy to know their weaknesses.”

Waverly and Jeremy stare at him for a moment. He shrugs.

“I like to make conversation with the competition.” Doc smirks. “One could say I was learning the playing field.”

Waverly raises an eyebrow. “Anything you can tell us about any of the other teams?”

Doc takes a deep breath as he resettles in his seat, crossing his arms in front of his chest. “James from Blue Steel makes an uncomfortable amount of references from movies that were quite terrible.”

“Pop culture, we’ve got that.” Waverly sighs. “He must have named his team.

“Dana from the Wreckers is the city engineer and is working on several interesting projects to improve Purgatory.”

“So she’s probably their math and science ringer.”

“And Tate Gordon from the Dominators is an up-and-coming candidate for mayor.”

At that, Waverly’s eyes widen, and she smacks a hand to her forehead. “Politics! We forgot to get someone to cover politics.”

Jeremy frowns. “Do we know anyone who can handle politics? We are kind of out in the middle of nowhere here. I doubt anyone other than Tate who’s got more ambition than God would pay attention to that sort of thing.”

The door to Shorty’s swings open, and Nicole strides through the door, flashing the group a smile. “Hey, team. I left something in the basement.”

Waverly grins. “Hey, sweetie pie.”

Nicole stops short halfway across the bar. “…Sweetie pie?”

Waverly frowns. “What? It’s a perfectly valid term of endearment.”

“It is. But one you only use when you want something.” Nicole crosses her arms in front of her chest and stares down at her wife. “Out with it.”

“Want to be our ringer?”

Nicole frowns. “What?”

“We need a ringer. For politics. Just in case a question comes up and we’re in a pinch.”

“And you want it to be me?” Nicole glances at the rest of the team. “Really?”

“You pay attention more than any of us,” Waverly shrugs. “Please?”

Nicole takes a deep breath, crossing her arms in front of her chest. “So I just have to sit there and wait until a politics question comes up, and that’s it?”

“And snack. There’s going to be plenty of bar snacks.”

Nicole glances at the other members of the team. Doc seems pleased at the suggestion. Jeremy shrugs, showing that he’s cool with it as well.

“Okay,” Nicole tentatively agrees. “But I can’t promise it’s going to go well.”

“Don’t worry,” Waverly replies, bouncing over to give her wife a kiss. “The odds are not high that we’re going to need you. But you can be our smart, sexy safety blanket.”

Nicole laughs before nodding. “Whatever you say, babe. See you tonight?”

Waverly nods with a grin. “See you tonight.”

She waits until Nicole saunters out the door before turning back to the group with a nod. “Okay. This is going to be fine.”

“This is going to be a disaster,” Jeremy adds helpfully. “But we’ve come too far to go back now.”

Waverly snorts. “Let’s just hope it’s as much of a disaster for everyone else as it is for us.”
