“This is not how I wanted to spend our trip to the pumpkin patch.”

Landon looks over at Hope curiously, raising an eyebrow with a bit of a smirk. “Oh, so you didn’t think that our school trip to the pumpkin patch wouldn’t end in an Ichabod Crane situation? I would have thought that Headless Horsemen are pretty common this time of year.”

Hope gives her boyfriend a mild look as they make their way through the pumpkin patch hand in hand, playing the part of a teenage couple on a cute fall date. “I think the technical term is a Dullahan.”

“Whatever. I’m just saying that we should know better by now. Especially during spooky season.”

“No, it’s not spooky season.” Hope holds up a finger and shakes her head. “My entire life is spooky season. I would much rather it be pumpkin season.”

Landon laughs as he tugs her closer. “Tell you what. If we make it out of this Dullahan situation in one piece, I will make it up to you.”

She squints at him, curious but also concerned. “How will you do that?”

“We will have the most basic, saccharine, normal date that will put Insta models to shame.”

She grins, because while she wouldn’t admit it to anyone else, it’d be nice to do something normal for a change. “Guess we better find this Dullahan and show it who’s boss.”

Landon grins in return before leaning in for a peck on the lips. “Lead the way, fearless—” He’s stopped in his tracks as an ear-splitting scream sounds from the woods. “—leader.”

Hope takes a deep breath before turning and running in the sound's direction. “C’mon. As Lizzie would say, it’s hero time.”

The fight with the Dullahan was harder than she expected, but the headless horseman is the one to die instead of some anonymous innocent. As much as Hope regrets their interrupted date, it still feels good to be saving the world instead of dooming it, to be helping rather than hurting. She’s never going to change things so that people remember the Mikaelsons as something good rather than a terrible evil, but at least she can try to make a good impression somewhere.

Landon takes her hand as they wander back through the pumpkin patch, giving it a soft squeeze but instead of heading back towards the car where they had initially parked, he leads them towards the front of the pumpkin patch where large orange gourds glow in the setting sun.

Hope frowns, but doesn’t stop him. “Where are we going?”

Landon raises an eyebrow. “I promised you an Insta model pumpkin date, didn’t I?”

“I thought you were kidding.” Well, not kidding exactly. But not that he would follow through. Their lives are too hectic, and the date too normal to be interest to him. But he stops just before the gate and turns to face her with an amused look.

“Hope Mikaelson, I would never jest about such a thing.”

Hope gives him a bit of a look in return. “Are you sure? What happened to it being spooky season?”

“Nah.” He steps back, pulling her arm with him as he goes to head towards the entrance. “It’s pumpkin season, everyone knows that!”

The smile that crosses her face is involuntary and bright, the genuine happiness that doesn’t come easily to her, but she smiles a lot more frequently with Landon around. She takes a step with him before tipping her head to the side.

“So what exactly can we expect on this Insta model date?”

“Well, I was thinking we could pick out the best pumpkins possible, since we are already at the pumpkin patch.” He tips his head to the side. “Then, we will take our pumpkins home, with a quick stop for pumpkin spice lattes, of course.”

“Of course,” Hope nods in agreement.

“And then we will carve these bad boys. Your carving skills will absolutely put mine to shame, but that’s half the fun of it. And then we can roast pumpkin seeds and watch It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown to round out the theme of the evening.”

Hope can’t help but laugh, before pulling him in closer and giving him a warm kiss. “That sounds perfect.”

“Good,” Landon nods before stepping back and gesturing to the path ahead of them. “My lady, your pumpkin patch awaits.”

Hope nods as she follows with plans to be a normal girl and just enjoy her date.
