Caroline watches as the two men disappear into another part of the Abattoir, before turning back to Hayley with a frown.

“Did I miss something?”

“So much,” Hayley sighs, before turning to head for one of the sitting rooms. “Want a drink?”

“Always.”

Caroline sets out to follow her, taking in the state of her home as Hayley walks Caroline through the last forty-eight hours and into the chaos that ensued. It’s a lot, if she’s honest, given all the current unknowns, and she hates the idea of Klaus being off the board for many complicated reasons. One is that knowing where Klaus Mikaelson is has always kept her safer. The other is that some part of her still cares about him, even if she knows he isn’t right for her. Hayley being his official, outright soulmate had eased that some, but they still linger, sneaking into her thoughts every so often.

“So Freya is back in Beacon Hills trying to figure out who this Peter guy is, and you brought Derek and Stiles back to find Hope. And we know for sure that Klaus doesn’t have Hope?”

“If he did, he would have sent word.” Hayley knocks back the rest of her drink. “But maybe this Peter guy is the one who hid her and now none of us can remember who he is.”

“That… makes things very complicated.”

Hayley nods before lifting the decanter with bourbon. “Another drink.”

“Please.” Caroline holds up her glass, watching the amber liquid swirl as Hayley pours. She takes another sip before taking a deep breath and asking what she doesn’t really want to ask. “So this Derek guy—”

Hayley smirks as she drops onto the couch again. “Is he really your soulmate?”

“According to the technicolor I’m now seeing,” she sighs. “How much do you know about him?”

“Well, his last name is Hale, which is this super powerful ancient werewolf line. But few of them are around anymore.”

“So hot local werewolf with a tragic backstory.” Caroline finishes her drink. “Yeah, that sounds like my type.”

Hayley laughs. “Look, I will not make fun of you. Derek seems like a nice guy. I think it’s the human you have to worry about.”

Caroline raises an eyebrow. “The Stiles guy?”

“He may be convinced that everyone Derek is actually attracted to might murder them all. I might hold off on the vamp reveal until you’re sure he likes you.”

Caroline laughs, but then her face sobers because oh. That might be a problem. Derek might have feelings about the fact that they won’t be able to have children of their own, or that pending interference. She’s going to live much longer than he would. But that’s a conversation they can save for when they’re getting to know each other. “I never thought I’d actually get one.”

Hayley tips her head to the side. “Why not?”

The blond shrugs, finishing her drink. “Look at what a stellar run at relationships I’ve had so far. Matt and I were dead in the water once I became a vampire. Klaus broke me and Tyler—”

“And then you and Klaus had a thing after that and he’s Klaus, so he ruined that too?” Hayley raises an eyebrow. “And let’s not forget Damon.”

Caroline holds up a finger. “Damon doesn’t count.”

Hayley holds up a hand in acknowledgement. “Fair enough. Damon doesn’t count. But—maybe what you need is someone who hasn’t been through all your traumas with you.”

Caroline opens her mouth to protest, then closes it again. Her eyes narrow as she considers. “… You might be right.”

Hayley smirks as she gets up to head to her room. “I’m not as dumb as I look.” She takes Caroline’s empty glass as she leaves. “Get some sleep. We’re going to start fresh looking for Klaus tomorrow.”

Caroline nods in agreement, but she has a feeling she won’t be able to sleep yet.

Elijah’s room has the best view of the Quarter, and since Elijah isn’t here to appreciate it, Caroline does instead. Spending time in New Orleans has never been easy, given everything that happened here and everything that happened in Mystic Falls, but this moment is nice to have a bit of quiet to see the city from a distance.

Footsteps sound in the hall behind her, followed by a gentle knock on the doorframe. Caroline turns, and there Derek stands, watching her from a distance. She flashes him a smile as she turns to face him.

“Hey.”

“Hey,” he nods, before gesturing to the room ahead of him. “Can I come in?”

“Yeah,” she replies. He moves through the room to stand on the balcony next to her, and she really takes him in for the first time. Dark hair, green eyes, handsome, for sure. All the things she likes in a guy, at least on a superficial level. “I know downstairs was a lot, and everything right now is a lot, but… maybe we could—”

“Start over?” He asks, and she nods. “Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.” He pauses long enough to hold out a hand to her. “I’m Derek Hale.”

“Caroline Forbes.” She smiles as she shakes his hand. “And—at the risk of being too upfront, since Hayley’s already given me some details on you, I’m a vampire.”

His eyes widen briefly, the wheels in his head turning as he watches her. “For how long?”

“Since I was seventeen.” A beat. “About ten years, now? Long enough to have a handle on things but not so old that I’ve lost touch with reality.”

“Good to know,” Derek nods, still processing. “Do you like it?”

She blinks, surprised by the question, but nods. “Yeah, weirdly enough. I mean, the blood drinking part sucks, but it made me the best version of myself.” She blinks. “Is that weird?”

Derek shakes his head. “No, that happened to another friend of mine, as werewolf though. Sometimes a change like that is what you need.”

“What about you? Should I worry about any kind of long-running werewolf-vampire rivalry?”

Derek smirks. “I’m not really in a position where I can refuse friends just because they’re vampires.”

“Good,” Caroline smiles. “Look, I know the universe is just smacking us in the face with this, but we can just… take things slow, you know? Get to know each other better?”

“I’m okay with that,” Derek nods. “Let’s just not tell Stiles you’re a vampire for a bit.”

“He’ll jump to the conclusion that I’m here to eat you.”

“He’s very paranoid.”

“I’ll keep it to myself,” Caroline laughs, as her phone begins to ring. “Oh, hold a sec.” She frowns at Elena’s name on the caller ID, and puts the phone to her ear. “Hey, Elena.”

“Hey. Have you heard anything about Klaus?”

Caroline frowns. “How do you know about Klaus?” A beat. “How do you know I know about Klaus?”

“Well, it’s Klaus,” Elena replies, not accusatory, but making her point well enough.

“Fair.”

“But I know about Klaus because Hope is with us.”

Caroline turns and meets Derek’s eyes, and he leaves not long after, going to wake up Hayley immediately. “Are you guys safe?”

“Yeah, we’re at the compound. She’s fine, so no need to rush.”

“Okay. I’ll talk it over with Hayley and we’ll be in touch. But thank you, Elena.”

“Of course. But Care? We have no idea how we got her.”

“When I get there, I’m gonna tell you all about a guy named Peter.” A beat, and she closes her eyes. “There’s also something else I have to tell you—”

The compound in question is a large swath of defensible land that Tyler bought with his inheritance after he and Elena needed to leave Mystic Falls for a while. He built it for her, a place where she could feel safe, even from powerful people like Klaus. The deed in their names, as well as Jeremy’s, who was often far away, walls of mountain ash for those that didn’t need an invitation in, and thick walls that would take time and effort to breach—the place was a fortress and Caroline is happy for them both, that after everything they’ve been through, they have a place like this to retreat to.

Elena lets them in when they arrive, waiting for them on the wide front porch as Caroline’s car pulls up the driveway. Standing by her side is Hope, who breaks away and rushes into her mother’s arms the minute she stepped out of the car. Hayley scoops her up and holds her close, one piece of relief lifting off her shoulders.

“Stiles, Derek, this is my best friend, Elena Gilbert. Elena, this is Stiles, and Derek.”

Elena’s eyes linger on Derek, before her eyebrows go up with an expression showing that they are going to talk later. Caroline shoots Derek an apologetic look that says she’s sorry in advance.

“This place is massive,” Stiles comments. “How did you do all of this?”

“It’s easy when you’re the last living member of your family and they leave you a shit ton of money,” Tyler replies, coming out of the house and draping an arm around Elena’s shoulders. “But welcome, all of you. Hopefully, we’ll be able to put our heads together and figure this out.”

Hope pulls back and looks at her mother. “Did you find Peter?”

All eyes turn to Hope. “Hope,” Hayley asks slowly. “Do you know who Peter is?”

“Yeah,” Hope looks at her mother, confused at her confusion. “He’s Aunt Freya’s soulmate.”

All the adults look confused. “How much do you remember about him?”

Hope’s eyes dart around the rest of the group, and she looks concerned. “Everything. Why?”

Tyler raises his hand. “Maybe we should take this inside. I think we’re all going to need a drink.”
