and these are things i can't ignore ~ from dusk til dawn/wynonna earp ~ 600
“Wynonna?”
It’s a second later that Dolls steps into view and he jerks into awareness, yanking on the arm flung over his head and finding it handcuffed. A couple more seconds reveals that he’s a) in a jail cell, b) being fitted for GPS and c) handcuffed to one of the bars. He struggles with the handcuffs for a moment, before he looks back at them, annoyed.
“Is this really necessary?”
“Says the fugitive from justice who faked his own death.” Dolls droll accent is already irritating and he grits his teeth for a moment before the man continues. “Never mind a murderer.”
He tips his head to the side for a moment, before glancing back to Wynonna. “Wynonna, c’mon –”
“If you’re going to pull that ‘you know me’ bullshit, don’t bother.”
“You know I was a criminal when you met me.”
“Yeah, but I didn’t know you were a psychopath!” Wynonna looks genuinely angry, and his face softens for a moment. They had been friends – more than friends even – once upon a time, and he thought that out of everyone in Purgatory, she would be the one to vouch for him, but apparently she’s trusting this suit more than she’s trusting him.
“What did you tell her?”
“The truth.” Certain and righteous, just like every other member of law enforcement he’s ever met. “She’s seen your file, Seth. All the bodies left in your wake.”
“Those weren’t me. Those were Richie.”
“How convenient. But you continued to run with him?”
“My brother was sick at the time. In a way you probably wouldn’t understand. He’s better now.” Sort of. Seth turns his attention back to Wynonna. “You’re working with cops now?”
“Don’t turn this back on me,” Wynonna glares, before she caves just a little, and glances back to Dolls, almost as though she’s unsure of what to tell them. “It’s complicated. But my dad used to work with Black Badge back in the day.”
“Wait. Wait wait wait.” Seth pushes himself up. “You’re Black Badge.”
Dolls frowns for a moment, straightening a bit. That clearly isn’t the reaction he was expecting. “You know what Black Badge is?”
“Yeah. Freddie filled me in on the details when you guys tried to recruit him a while back.”
“Freddie Gonzalez. As in the Texas Ranger who’s partner your brother killed. He was recruited for Black Badge, and then told you about it.”
“Yeah, well, Peacekeeper is a tough job when it’s a one man gig. Now are you going to call Freddie and have him vouch for me so I can get to telling you about the hoard of culebras coming into town, or are we going to keep doing this dance?”
Wynonna blinks. “Cul-what?”
“Culebras. Snake vampires. Are you sure they’re coming here?”
“I wouldn’t be here if they weren’t.”
Dolls set his jaw for a moment, before stalking his way back to the phone on his desk and picking it up. There’s a quick conversation and he finally hangs up and moves his way back to the jail cell.
“You’re letting him go?”
“He checks out. But if you try and stab us in the back? I will shoot you.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Seth moves towards Wynonna. “Tell me something I don’t know.”
another soldier gone to war ~ supernatural/teen wolf ~ 846
It isn’t always this way. Usually Dean is cracking jokes and Lydia is deadpanning reactions behind him when they come back from a win, but this isn’t one of those wins. Sure, at the end of the day, the monster was killed and they all got to go home in one piece, but they didn’t manage to save everyone. Sam likes to believe he’s used to it, that he’s guarded himself against the disappointment that comes with doing the job that they do, but it never really does get easier. In some ways, he should probably be relieved, that he hasn’t lost that bit of himself that’s human, but sometimes he wishes it were.
It’s Allison that this particular case has hit the hardest, however, and his eyes keep drifting to her in the side mirror as they rocket down the highway back to home. There’s blood all over her clothes, all over all of them, but she’s bearing the most, having been trying to race to the victim – Jenny, her name was Jenny – before the monster of the week did. It didn’t work out the way any of them had hoped, but Jenny had been the last person that particularly beast would turn into a victim.
When they arrive back at the bunker, and they’re alone in his room, Allison just sits on the edge of the bed, fingers flexing slightly at the stickiness of the blood between them and Sam takes a deep breath as he steps closer, crouching down in front of her and resting his hands over hers.
“You want to shower first?”
She shakes her head at first, her fingers curling into his as her eyes cloud and she looks down again. “I was so close.”
“I know. You did everything you could.”
“Why wasn’t I fast enough?”
“Because you’re only human.” His hand comes up to brush against her cheek gently. “You can only do so much on your own.”
She looks down again. “I said I would protect her.”
“You did the best you could.”
There’s a moment of silent that passes between them as she tries to accept that answer. It’s never an easy one, and it doesn’t come right away, but for now, some of the tension seems to lift from her shoulders. “You’ve been doing this for so long. How do you handle this?”
It seems like such an odd question at first, because by the time that Sam and Allison met in college, she was always a hunter, but he knows that she hasn’t always done things the way that he and Dean do. There were times when she used to have a job, to stay put in one place because it’s what needed protecting. Hunting was part of her life, but it wasn’t her life, and he can only imagine that these kinds of disappointments and losses were few and far between. Sam shrugs at first, because the way he deals isn’t necessarily healthy, but it’s still worth a shot.
“I clean up,” he begins, because that is always step number one. “I get good and drunk.” She glances up at him and smirks, because while Dean usually had a healthy intake of alcohol going, Sam never really was one to take that route. “I sleep it off, and then I try again tomorrow.”
She nods slowly, before she shakes her head a bit. “Sometimes I don’t know how long I can keep doing this.”
“You don’t have to.”
“I do.”
“You don’t. You can go back to Beacon Hills and do the same work there. This pace … it isn’t for everyone.”
“But you …”
“Drive all over the country literally all the time.” He gives her a small look at that, because using distance as an excuse has never really been their problem. Things come to a head with them because Sam is Sam and sometimes someone has to call him on his shit, but it’s never really been a matter of distance. “I’d rather have you to go home to than you try to push yourself on something you can’t handle.” He pushes up a bit, pressing a kiss to her forehead and pulling her to her feet. “But you shouldn’t make a decision on something like that now.”
“Right. Emotional decisions aren’t always good ones.” She looks down at herself, seeing how much of a mess she is, before shaking her head again. “Sorry about all of this. I’m usually better at compartmentalizing.”
“Sometimes things hit us harder than others.” He smiles a bit, before steering her towards the bathroom. “You’ll figure it out.”
“I will,” she nods, before holding up a finger as she smirks. “I do expect you to follow through on that promise of getting me drunk though.”
“Of course I will,” Sam smirks, as he leans in to kiss her softly. “There’s a process.”
She laughs as she pulls back from the kiss, then nods. “Thank you.”
He nods as she disappears into the bathroom. “Anytime.”
daddy's little girl, center of his world ~ teen wolf/tvdverse ~ 1,334
Sure, there’s Monroe, but that’s more of a pack enemy than one specific to Malia. Everyone who comes for her, thinks that because she’s alone they can come for Scott or someone trying to get revenge on Peter for something and not realizing that his daughter can protect herself, and it’s not really about anything Malia has done. She likes it that way. Enemies take way too much effort and she just wants to live her life. The only real enemies she has are in Mystic Falls, for killing Damon, and honestly she’s not all that sorry about that, and those enemies aren’t actively coming after her.
Tyler, on the other hand, has slightly more enemies than Malia does.
Mystic Falls he left a long time ago and doesn’t seem interested in going back. New Orleans is a no-go for Reasons that Malia doesn’t actually care about. She tries to get him to go to Beacon Hills, but she gets the sense that there’s something about Scott that unnerves him, for reasons that probably have something to do with having been an alpha before. One day she’s going to get him to talk to Derek, to see if that will help convince him to join the pack, but for now she’s willing to just keep going with him, even if they don’t have a moor to draw them in.
Tonight’s port in the storm happens to be a property that Alaric owns that Jeremy sometimes crashes in, celebrating a job well done after taking down a group of vampires who were terrorizing a small town. There is lots of drinking involved, which does jack all for Malia, but leads to Tyler getting a little handsy which Malia does not mind in the slightest. Jeremy gets abandoned halfway through and they all crash out for an evening of well-deserved sleep.
Or, at least, that’s how it starts.
Malia’s awakened by the sound of scuffling halfway through the evening, the kind that definitely delineates some kind of fight happening somewhere in the house. Given that she’s the most combat ready at any given time, she’s quickly sliding out of bed, pulling on whatever clothes she can find – mostly Tyler’s shirt, she’s making her way into the man area, eyes glowing, claws out and …
… stopping with a groan when she comes upon the scene in the living room.
The room is a mess, with furniture scattered here and there, and the large werewolf in the middle of the room has Jeremy by the throat, but fortunately it’s a werewolf she recognizes. Standing there, in his usual designer flair, is her father, looking fairly calm, for all that Peter is ever calm. He may act like it, but Malia knows better than anyone that anger always lurks just under Peter’s surface – easily summoned, and easily stoked.
“Peter.”
His head turns to the sound of her voice, taking in her annoyance with a thin smile, as though he’s pleased to see her. “Hello, sweetheart.”
Jeremy twists to try and see Malia and frowns, confused. Tyler comes up behind her, also itching for a fight, and he follows Jeremy’s look with: “You know this guy?”
“Yeah. This is my father.” Malia crosses her arms in front of his chest. “Put him down, Peter.”
Peter shrugs. “If you insist.” Jeremy drops to the floor with a hard thunk!, and Malia looks like she’s about to protest, and Peter cuts her off. “He shot at me with a crossbow. It was not very hospitable.”
“It’s three in the morning! He had no idea who you were! He couldn’t have, because I had no idea you were coming.”
“You might have known I was coming if you answered your phone every once in a while. Or actually stayed in one place for more than five minutes so I could easily find you when I needed to.” There’s a pause as he takes in his daughter’s state of undress, then his eyes drift to Tyler over Malia’s shoulder, and there’s definitely a look in his eye that is not safe for anyone in this room but her. “But I can see that you were … preoccupied.”
“Oh my God.” Malia growls as she makes her way down the stairs and glances over to Jeremy. “Are you okay?”
Jeremy nods. “Yeah, just a couple bruises.”
At least there’s that. Malia then turns to Peter and shoves at his shoulder. “You. Outside.”
“Malia?”
“I’ll be okay,” Malia glances back to Tyler over her shoulder and gives him a softer look. “I’ll be back. Just give me a couple minutes.” Tyler weighs the options for a moment, before making his way down to Jeremy and nodding.
“Shout if you need help.”
Malia nods, before giving him a small smile. “Don’t worry. I can handle him.” She’s probably one of the only people who can.
After ten minutes of negotiating with Peter and promising to at least text him back when he calls, she returns back into the house and drops down on the couch with a heavy sigh. Peter is exhausting on a good day and she knows that he’s trying, but she wants to believe that eventually, one day, he will try a little less to invade her privacy. She’s rubbing her eyes, tired in general, and doesn’t look up until she feels the dip of Tyler sitting next to her on the couch.
“Sorry about all of that.” She turns to him. “Is Jeremy okay?”
“Yeah, he is. It’s just bruises.” He’s quiet for a moment, before shifting to let her lean back into him. “So your dad.”
“He’s … a mess, ninety percent of the time. He doesn’t really have a lot of anchors and he’s more than a little broken but he’s trying. Believe it or not, him waiting in the living room and not just knocking Jeremy unconscious and charging into the bedroom is trying.”
“Still kinda fucked up though.”
“Oh, it’s more than a little fucked up.” Malia pauses for a moment, before giving a small shrug. “But unlike my biomom he actually wants to get to know me, and doesn’t want to murder me.”
Tyler stares at her. “Seriously?”
“Peter is bad. Corrine is worse.” And that’s putting it lightly. She sighs before shifting to face him more. “I’m not trying to make excuses for him, and if he starts killing again, I’m going to be the first person to lock him up but … the reason why he’s this way is not his fault. And there’s a part of me that he gets that … almost no one else I know does. Except for you.”
It’s hard to deal with being a killer – whether you did it intentionally or otherwise.
Tyler nods a bit, before draping an arm around her shoulders. “If he charges in here in the middle of the night again, I can’t guarantee that Jeremy won’t shoot him in the chest.”
“If he charges in here in the middle of the night again, Jeremy will be the least of his problems.”
Tyler chuckles a bit, before pressing a kiss to her temple. “Want to try and go back to sleep?”
Malia takes a deep breath and nods as she gets to her feet. “If it makes you feel any better, he generally wants me to be happy so upside, he’s not the kind of dad who tends to threaten my boyfriends.”
“While we’re dating sure,” Tyler smirks as he takes her hand to lead her upstairs. “But if we break up, is that still going to hold true?”
She pauses, weighing the options in her head, before shrugging. “I don’t know. Stiles survived, but Peter was also in a mental hospital at the time.”
“You are really not making me feel better, babe.”
She laughs, before leaning in to kiss him. “Sorry. I’ll try better next time.”
