Laura Hale does not do well with idle hands.

She arrives in DC to a text that while they were supposed to have an evening to themselves, away from the noise of the main house, it isn’t going to happen because a lead finally broke on one of his cases and he’s gotta go track a suspect down. She’s free to wait at the apartment, since he still wants to see her tonight and she still needs the break, but she’s going to have to wait and that is never what someone who’s terrible at keeping still wants to hear.

Still, there’s a grocery store not far down the block, and she has a few hours to kill, so she might as well put herself to work, and that’s how Parrish comes home to several meals for two ready with instructions in the fridge, and more good smelling food cooking on the stove. She hears the door slam before she hears his voice, but the familiar footfalls moving across the floor are enough to let her know it is who she expected.

“Smells good in here,” he says with a small smile as he comes up behind her, sliding his arms around her waist. She smiles as his lips find the crook of her neck and she leans back into him with a nod.

“Well, you took too long, so I made you and the Sheriff dinner for the rest of the week.” She points to the fridge with the end of her long spoon before she goes back to stirring. “All the instructions are on top so you just have to heat and eat.”

“Is any of the food to feed me now, while I am currently starving?”

She laughs as he pulls away from her, going to poke his head in the fridge and see what’s available. “Yes, that’s what I’m working on right now. I’m trying a new recipe.”

“Sounds good.” He looks over the options for a moment, reading some of the cards with instructions, before closing the fridge. “But you do know you’re not going to win the sheriff over again with food, right?”

“I am very aware.” She turns her attention back to the food again for a moment, swallowing hard as she does. It isn’t that she doesn’t understand the Sheriff’s problems with her, and they are well deserved, but she’s hoping that time will mend some of those wounds. And what time won’t fix, maybe some of her homemade penne vodka will fill in the cracks. “But I’m not above bribery.” No one is, really. She pauses for a moment, before grabbing one of the ladles and scooping up some of the sauce. “Come try this.”

Is it an abrupt subject change? Yes. Is she sorry about it? Nope.

Parrish glances over with a small nod, before he makes his way closer to do as he’s told. He leans over, takes a sip of the sauce, and then pauses. Then he takes another sip and he pauses again. He does this repeatedly in silence, dragging out each one in a way that he knows drives her crazy, and she does her best to try and be patient as she waits for him to weigh in, but when the sauce in the ladle is mostly gone, she tips her head back in frustration to yell at the ceiling.

“Will you tell me what you think already?”

He laughs in response to her outburst, before placing the ladle in the sink and snaking an arm around her waist to pull her closer. “It’s delicious. I can’t wait to eat the rest of the actual meal.”

She grins as she lets him pull her in for a kiss, looping one arm around his neck securely. “Well, all I have to do is pour it over the chicken and have the chicken bake for about a half hour and then we should be good to go.”

“A half hour, huh?” His lips leave hers after a moment, before he moves his lips to her neck again. “Do you have to watch it?”

“I thought you were starving.” It’s a ruse she sees through with ease, and while she normally doesn’t mind being seduced by her boyfriend, it does contradict his earlier statement that food is his priority.

“I am. But if we’re going to have to eat anyway, might as well do something to keep my mind off it.”

She laughs a bit at that, feeling his hands slide under her shirt, and she nods, before pushing back. “Okay. But you have to actually keep your hands off me while I get this in the oven.”

“Now, that is a challenge,” he sighs as he goes to lean back against the island in the middle of the kitchen. She works quickly, and with possibly slightly more mess than absolutely necessary, but five minutes later, the chicken is in the oven, the timer is set, and she turns around to face him again with a small smile.

“Alright. I’m all yours.”

“Good,” he grins, before pulling her in and steering her towards the bedroom. “Let’s go.”
