The irony of Barry Allen is that just because he got faster, doesn’t mean he’s ever on time.

He can move hundreds of miles a second, he can cross coasts in the blink of an eye, but at the end of the day, Barry still reacts with the speed of a mortal man. Sometimes, no matter how fast he may be, he may never be fast enough. Those moments, as few and far between as they are, always seem to cost him more than he’s ever prepared to lose, and this moment is no exception.

The battle itself is a hectic one. Kara had called Barry for help, needing the extra metahuman abilities to fight back against this new alien threat. Barry is no Kryptonian, but he’s fast, and most of his focus has been in clearing civilians from the streets of National City while Kara handled the battle from above. For a large part of the battle, that strategy worked well. Clearing the killing field while dodging stray streaks from the heat vision of the two aliens struggling above is easy enough, with the DEO agents helping to get them out of the way, but it isn’t long before Kara starts to lag. As strong as she is, she’s not unyielding, and she can only take those hits for so long before she can’t continue.

The other problem is, it’s very hard to keep tabs on a battle that’s happening over your head.

“Okay, Kara, we’re clear.”

There’s no response. Barry frowns in response and looks up, hand coming up to shield his eyes against the brightness of the sun. There, silhouetted against the horizon, is Supergirl and Reign, with Reign having her hand around Kara’s throat.

“Kara?”

Still no response. Instead, Barry sees Reign’s fingers release, and Kara’s limp body begin to plummet towards the ground. He takes off without even thinking, aiming his path towards one of the nearby buildings so that he can run up the side and catch her before she hits the ground, but in the struggle of Barry versus gravity, gravity is the victor once again. His fingers reach out for her wrist, trying to get a hold on her, but she slips through his fingers and he can’t do anything but watch as she picks up speed again and collides with the ground, hard.

He swings down to where she’s landed, dropping to his knees next to her and moving his fingers to try and find a pulse. It takes a moment, but it’s there, faint and threading under his fingers. He then looks up at Reign, still hovering in the air like she’s lording over them, and Barry grits his teeth in response.

“You won’t get away with this.”

“You think you can stop me.”

“Not yet. Not now. But we will.”

Reign’s eyes begin to glow, and Alex’s voice is in his ear, telling Barry to run, and he does. He scoops up Kara from the ground and speeds away, needing to get Kara back to the DEO as quickly as possible. When he arrives, he skids to a stop, losing control of his speed for a moment and dropping down against the wall. The med team is ready for them, scooping Kara off the ground and moving to begin treating her. Winn and J’onn are close behind them, and Winn watches with wide eyes, before turning back to Barry.

“What happened?”

Barry looks up at them both, before shaking his head. “I wasn’t fast enough.”

“Truth or dare?”

Eliot looks over at the man sitting next to him and raises a silent eyebrow in response. The three of them are stuck in the van, waiting for Nate and Sophie to give them the all clear to infiltrate, and apparently the silence has gotten to be too much for Hardison. It’s not too much for Eliot, however, and he seems to be less than pleased about being pulled into this game.

“Seriously?”

“What’s truth or dare?” Parker’s curious expression is a little too obvious, and while Parker doesn’t know about a lot of things, Eliot highly doubts that she doesn’t know what truth or dare is, and his expression indicates as much. Hardison is eager to buy into it, however, if it means it gets him what he wants which is the three of them playing this ridiculous game.

“It’s a game where you pick one or the other, and either you get asked a question you have to answer truthfully, or you get dared to do something ridiculous.”

“Sounds like fun,” Parker quips a little too quickly, flashing Eliot a grin as she leans forward into the space between the two seats, elbows resting next to each of the headrests. “Eliot can go first.”

“Eliot is not playing,” Eliot clarifies, before gesturing out the window to the building where Sophie and Nate were currently residing. “We’re supposed to be working.”

“Yeah, we’ll this is a really long period of downtime in the work process, and I don’t mind spicing things up a little.” Hardison shifts in his seat to lean against the driver’s side door, doing his best to get a little more comfortable. “What’s wrong, Eliot? You scared?”

“Scared?” The scoff is audible as he shakes his head, looking out the window again. “I’m not scared, I just think it’s stupid. What kind of dares are we going to do in the van, Hardison?”

“Oh, I think we can get quite creative,” Hardison replies, rubbing his hands together with a bit of a grin. “And you do know there are two options, right? You can also pick truth. Unless you’re scared of the truth.”

“I’m not scared of the truth.”

“Seems like you’re a little scared of the truth,” Parker replies, clearly intending on ganging up on the third member of their little trio, at least while they have an advantage.

“If you’re only going to be doing truth questions, then you shouldn’t be playing Truth or Dare. You should be playing something else.”

The two of them glance over at each other, having a silent conversation that Eliot already hates without even needing to hear it. In some ways the silent conversations are the worst. At least when Hardison is running his mouth, Eliot can anticipate the kind of idiocy he’s in for.

“Fine. Raise your hand if you still think Truth or Dare is a viable game?”

Immediately two hands shoot up from the other members of the car and Eliot scowls, before shaking his head and going to push the door open. “I’m going to check the perimeter.”

The two of them just smirk knowingly at him as he leaves and he rolls his eyes, trudging off towards the far corner of the building. Unfortunately, that doesn’t stop the comms from working, and he can hear them continuing to taunt him as he leaves.

“One day, you’re going to crack like an egg, Eliot. All those juicy, juicy secrets will be mine.”

Eliot doesn’t respond, but he’s now more determined than ever to keep his mouth shut. If Hardison actually thought that Truth or Dare was going to work? He had a whole other thing coming.

Laurel spends a long time waiting for Oliver and Sara to come home.

It’s not in a way she ever outwardly acknowledges, given the circumstances, but there are weeks where each time she picks up the phone or someone knocks on the door, she’s hoping that there will be good news. That her sister or Oliver will be on the other side of it. That this nightmare will be over and in some ways, things can begin to heal.

She lies to herself and claims to have put it behind her at a certain point. She kisses Tommy to tell herself she’s moving on. She pushes herself into work to solve problems that she can and get justice for other people that she’s never going to have. She isn’t sure if she’s waiting so that she can be angry with them in person, at the people who really deserve it, or if she’s waiting because she wants them back so desperately she can’t breathe, but she waits all the same.

Maybe it’s just hard to believe when there isn’t a body for them to bury. When their headstones sit over empty graves. It seems a lot less final when you can’t see the evidence. That suspicion is only confirmed when Oliver returns to her life five years later, and she feels like she can breathe just a little bit more. Sara follows him not long after and her sister manages to pull her up to the surface again. She stops drowning and stops waiting and tries to throw herself back into her life again, for better or for worse.

Sara dies again, and her world comes collapsing down around her again. She holds her sister in her arms and knows that this time she won’t wait to rebuild. This time, she’s ready to take on the fight herself, to swim to the surface and do more than survive. Her sister has a legacy to protect, and she will make sure that it’s defended with every breath she has.

She’s done simply waiting. Its time for her to actually act.
