It was the unexpected sparkle that caught his eye. Lying on the closest table was a lady's earring. Snapping on a glove, he picked it up, looking at it from all angles. It was a simple blue stone in a silver setting, very classy. But where had it come from? None of the dead had earrings at all, let alone an earring like this. But at the same time, it was quite familiar. He placed the earring in an evidence bag, tucking it safely inside his desk.
A few hours later, the morgue doors opened, and in rushed Agent Lee. Ducky didn't notice her at first, and after making sure he wasn't paying attention, she cornered Jimmy at the sink.
"I can't find it.." She hissed under her breath.
"Find what?" The confusion was obvious in Jimmy's voice.
"My earring. It's gone."
Jimmy went pale. "Gone??" His voice was a hoarse whisper. "Where did you lose it?"
She rolled her eyes. "Where do you think??
So engrossed in their conversation were they that they failed to notice Ducky walk up to them, evidence bag in hand.
"I presume that this is yours then, Miss Lee."
Now it was her turn to look pale. "Y-Yes, it is. It must have fallen out when I brought the paperwork for the Evans case."
Ducky smiled knowingly. "I'm sure it did, my dear. However, in the future it would benefit you both if you were to make sure you didn't leave things behind. I'm sure you understand." He handed her the bag with her earring in it, which she promptly stuffed in her pocket.
"Thanks, Duc--Dr. Mallard." She was blushing strongly now, and the tips of Palmer's ears had turned pink.
"You can call me Ducky, dear. Everyone else does."
"Thanks, Ducky. I-I'd better get back." Agent Lee hurried out of Autopsy to put her earring back in before anybody noticed.
"Um...Dr. Mallard?"
"Yes, Mr. Palmer?"
"You're not going to tell Gibbs about this, are you?"
"Now why would I do that?"
There was an awkward pause before Jimmy replied. "You guys are really good friends."
Ducky chuckled. "Why Mr. Palmer, just because Gibbs and I are friends does not mean I tell him everything. However, I would recommend for your sake that he does not find out."
Jimmy gulped audibly. "Yes, Doctor."
