Hilary was born to Arthur and Roberta McCallahan when her brother, Jake, was five years-old. Jake never really took much of an interest in his sister, too old to feel threatened by her, and while they got closer once they got older, they never really connected as kids. That didn’t stop him from teasing her when they were growing up, though, it just happened once she started to get more interested in boys. Hilary was very close to her father, having spent a lot of time with him since he was home more, but was still close with her mother as well. Like her brother, she spent a lot of time in Trinity General, but she fell in love with the pulse and flow of the hospital more than her brother had, and was determined to become a doctor like her mother.

She went to the same public high school her brother did, but when she graduated she stayed close to home for college, majoring in biology on the pre-med track, and then moving into John’s Hopkins for med school. When she came back to do her residency at Trinity, she found she had to earn her stripes a little more than most, so that the other residents and doctors didn’t think she got the position because of her mother. She went through a lot of different options when she was trying to chose her specialty, pediatrics, neurology, cardiology, but she wound up settling on orthopedics, liking the physical aspect of the medicine. She gets called down to the ER often to set broken bones, and deal with other related injuries, but she mostly deals with patients and surgeries that are scheduled with the hospital.

With the hours she works, Hilary has a hard time maintaining long term relationships, which is bad for her because she feels more comfortable in relationships that she does in friends with benefits style situations. It’s also bad for her because she like sex, and so she’s more willing to let her friends set her up on blind dates when she hasn’t been in a relationship in a while, and that usually needs to a night of drinking and sex she can’t remember just to scratch the itch. She hates that part, and tries to get herself into more long term relationships, but the men she sees she either works with or works with her brother, and she thinks the former are assholes and she’s afraid Jake will beat the crap out of the latter. Therefore, she finds herself lonely a lot, and while she enjoys her job, she resents that aspect of it.

She’s best friends with one of the nurses in the ER, Maggie Houston, and close with the detectives her brother works directly with, but other than that, she doesn’t have many close friends, and prefers it that way, being more of a private person. She sees the older staff at the hospital as more of a surrogate family, and she would trust them with her life, if the situation required, just like she knows they would trust her. She also tends to panic easily in non-medical situations, and while she tries to keep herself in check, when she’s under a lot of stress it becomes a lot worse.
