Things couldn’t just happen spread out over years. Of course not. Things had to happen all at once. My getting exposed as a mole, and while I really wasn’t the bad one, I still pissed people off anyway. And then they made a CSI, and although I worked my ass off to get there, Ryan still treated me like shit. And you know what, maybe for a little while I deserved it, but by the time me working in the field came around, he was just being petty.

And then Nick, and my sister, and that bitch Erica, and Nick asking out Valera and one right after the other and damnit, there are times when I just want to crawl into a hole and disappear, and see if anyone would actually come and try and find me. Or just sink to their level for once, and see if they like how it feels.

But I don’t. I pick me head up, I brush myself off, and I move on. I be the better person. What else have I got left to do?

She was always so much prettier when she smiled. Well—not that she wasn’t pretty when she wasn’t smiling, but she just seemed so much—brighter. Maybe brighter was the right word.

She could light up the room with that smile. Or at least, to him that’s what it seemed like. After all, she was his best friend, his collaborator, his girlfriend, and when she smiled, and gave that subtle indication that she was happy, it—just suddenly made the world a brighter place to be. Things didn’t seem as dreary or downtrodden, and it was almost as though if she could find something in this world to smile about, anyone could.

Not implying in any way that it was hard to get her to smile or that she was generally a disgruntled person by nature it just meant that—well, the idea of the world being a tiny bit brighter because she smiled was a good one. It gave him a good feeling.

And he kind of liked that feeling.

It was usually just a look. A casual glance that taken out of context would probably mean nothing to anyone just passing by, but to her, it meant a little bit more. It was like a secret signal between them, and they could be talking about anything, a case, something with the evidence, hell even what the weather was, and it would still mean the same thing because she knew the meaning behind it, and that was all that mattered.

And it killed her sometimes that they couldn’t be open the way they—or she anyway—wanted to, but she understood very well that this was the way things had to be. He was her boss. If it got out that they were together, people might think things and assume things, and she knew that he was right in keeping things a secret. It was easier this way. Well—as easy as things are going to get when you’re involved with your boss.

For now, she was going to have to just settle for secret glances.

He didn’t want to let her go.

Aside from the fact that he couldn’t believe he was holding her to begin with, and the other fact that he had just proclaimed his love to her while being held hostage, in a courthouse, surrounded by their friends and a gunman, and then proceeded to go risk his life to try and save said gunman. That can put a lot of pressure on a person, he realized that, so in the end it came down to the fact that he was afraid that if he let her go, she would tell him that she really wasn’t ready for this. And he wasn’t quite sure if he could handle that. Hell, he wasn’t sure if he could handle this, but he was also pretty sure that her shooting him down would be the worse of two evils, so he was going to deal with this one. So, now that he had decided to process all this, and realized that he probably completely went about this the wrong way—

—he really, really, didn’t want to let her go.

He knew that he probably shouldn’t watch her while they were at work. It was a lot easier for him to brush it off as nothing, saying he was just keeping tabs on the evidence, but in the end, he knew that it was probably a lot more obvious when he was at work.

He really couldn’t help it, though. Stella Bonasera commanded attention wherever she went, and who was he not to give it to her. It was all a matter of making sure it was subtle, and that she knew she was being paid her due, but no one else knew about it. Therein lay the challenge. And granted, it was probably one of the more difficult ones.

But he had always been one for a challenge.

i really started to not despise her as much when she finally stood up to ryan on how much of a jerk he was being. can't say i like her yet (she's going to have to really wow me) but i think i could get there.
