The rain was pounding down around the two men as they finally arrived at the castle, the stone walls looming up above them. They didn’t feel it was right to force the poor animal to carry them in the rain, so they had walked a good mile through the storm to get where they were. They both took a deep breath and stared up at the giant doors above them.
“Do you really think Jarius will believe it’s you and let us in?” the one began, wiping the rain from his face.
“I don’t really think it’s a matter of that,” the first replied, giving the man a look, “It’s more of a matter of will he let me in, despite the fact that I’m with you.”
“Ouch, my friend,” he sighed, “You’ve cut me deep there.”
“It’s not my fault you’re a magician,” his friend replied, “And magicians and knights of Avalon don’t exactly get along.”
“Nor mine. Just the way I was born.”
“Well, here’s hoping he’s not as distrusting of magicians as he used to be.”
“And here’s hoping you know how to convince him it’s you.”
They both started to bang out the wooden door above them, their voices rising to meet the ears of the guards around them.
“SANCTUARY! SANCTUARY!”

Lindsay pinched her eyes closed when the loud banging coming from somewhere roused her from her sleep. She felt the Old World slipping away, and she tried to concentrate, tried to hold on, but she couldn’t. Not like this. Reluctantly, she forced her eyes open and took in the sights of the room around her.
She could hear the rain pouring and pattering onto the balcony outside, and the damp wind blowing in through the curtains. There were no doors for her to close on the balcony, but she wasn’t getting wet, wet, so she wasn’t going to complain.
She climbed out of bed and made her way to the door, pulling it open to meet Flack’s equally sleepy eyes across the hallway.
“What’s going on?” he asked, and she shrugged, before watching as Christopher walked over to them, pushing past Flack into the room. Flack gave the man a look before following him as he walked to the balcony of the room.
“What’s going on?” Flack repeated, and Christopher turned and sighed heavily.
“Two men are seeking sanctuary, claiming to be old friends of Jarius’s,” he replied.
Lindsay and Flack joined him at the balcony, even though it meant they were going to get soaking wet, standing in the rain as they were. They were closer to the wall than anywhere else in the castle, and they could hear the voices clearly from where they were standing.
“Who goes there? Who seeks sanctuary?”
“I’m a friend of the master of this house,” the voice came back, “My companion and I seek shelter from this storm.”
“I have very few friends, stranger,” Jarius’s voice came suddenly, “And not many of them live outside these walls.”
“I haven’t been traveling in these parts for a long time, my lord,” the voice came again, “It’s been years, decades even.”
“Decades?” Jarius’s voice came jokingly, “Then how are you sure I will know you, good sir?”
“And I must protest you allowing their entrance, my lord,” Sir Marlin’s voice rose above the rain, “The man is a known magician, and if this stranger choose to travel in the company of those as untrustworthy as they, than something must be amiss.”
“I may travel in the company of whoever I please,” the man’s voice came angrily, and Flack suddenly stood up ramrod straight. He knew that tone and that voice. The accent hadn’t been quite as discernable from where they were standing, but Flack would know that tone anywhere.
Lindsay looked at him in confusion, and then her eyes widened, “Is it—?”
“I—I think so,” he replied, leaning over the edge of the balcony so that he could hear better.
“That is very true, good sir,” Jarius replied, “But that doesn’t mean I feel I should let you into the safety of my castle walls.”
“Damnit, I’m a knight of Avalon!” the man raged, “You know there’s only one knight who will travel with a magician in tow, and that magician is one you can trust.”
There was a long silence, save for the pattering of the rain, and they could tell that Jarius was thinking this over.
“You swear you’re knight of our order?”
“On my life,” he replied, “I was one of the founding members.”
Another long pause, and then Jarius spoke up again, “How many died in the battle for Avalon?”
“Too many to count,” the voice came back, “And my heart breaks for every one.”
The response was instantaneous, “Open the doors!”
“My lord, I really must protest,” Marlin said as he followed Jarius down the winding stairs to the main hall, “A man claiming to be a knight of this order yet he walks with a magician and claims for the trickster to be his friend? Surely you must see that something is not quite right.”
“There is only one knight I know who will walk with a magician as his friend, and that man is like a brother to me,” Jarius replied as he met up with Lindsay, Flack and Christopher as they were coming down the opposite staircase, “You really expect me to turn him away when he asks for sanctuary.”
Marlin continued to protest as Jarius walked forward and embraced one of the men who hand come in the door.
“It’s been too long, my friend,” Jarius said, before pulling back to look the man in the eye, “Far too long.”
The man nodded, and his eyes wandered back of the man’s shoulder to where Lindsay Flack and the others were standing behind him. The face, a familiar one at this point, formed a frown of confusion as he studied the two people in front of him.
“Flack? Montana?”
A smile of relief crossed both of their faces, but Lindsay was the first one to speak.
“Danny.”

Danny didn't know Flack and Lindsay were in Everworld, did he? Surprise reunions for everyone!
I've very much enjoyed this and I look forward to seeing where you go from here. And when I go shopping in a day or two, I'll be looking for the books. I know I saw them around a while back. I don't know if they still are but I'll be looking.
