Reference Post: CSI:NY (with pictures!)
Like with the Conviction post, these characters are listed in alphabetical order. Also, for those of you in ![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
qs_pets with me, Flack and Hammerback are in here, so...yeah. You can get some background on them. Again, these are my interpretations, and they might not be the same as yours, but they're the way I'm going to write them.
As I said before, the series is going to be set post-season 2, so any references made there are not going to be from season 3. EXCEPT for Angell. And the big DL moment (which is looking somewhat a lot like the Brian/Chris moment from Conviction...hmms...) So I guess a more accurate timeline would be post-302 ("Not What it Looks Like").
Det. Jennifer Angell is relatively new to the homicide division, but she’s learning the ropes fast and picking up things pretty quickly. Not much is really known about her, because she has only appeared in a few episodes, but she’s tough with street smarts, and for some reason, I see her and Nick Potter really getting along.
Det. Stella Bonasera is one of the most passionate members of Mac Taylor’s team. She knows when she's pushing something too far most of the time, but sometimes she will fight everyone (usually Mac) to get her point across. That fight doesn't always pertain to a case, but to her life as well. She's a very strong character and doesn't get knocked down as easily as everyone expects her to. She's very careful about who she let's get close to her in a romantic respect as well, especially after what happened with her last relationship, Frankie Mala. I really see her and Steele. Because they remind me a lot of each other. Except Stella's not a smug bastard some of the time.
Det. Don Flack I view as pretty much the most stable aspect of this team. He's not a CSI, but he's always there. This has mostly been seen in the case of Danny ("On the Job," "Run Silent, Run Deep") and Stella ("All Access") but I'm hoping that this season they expand that more to include Lindsay, Hawkes, maybe even Mac. Despite the fact that he comes from a long line of cops, he worked hard to get to the point where he is today. He's Danny's best friend, and is generally always there to have his back, even when Danny starts turning into an emotional wreck. Which happens somewhat frequently, I might add. That's more of the reason why I paired him with Jess. Purely for the fact that he can handle her emotional moments, and balance her out. And the fact that he actually cares would be a plus (Emily no like Jess's relationship with Steele. Bad! *hisses and holds up cross*)
Dr. Sid Hammerback has to be my most favorite coroner ever to grace a CSI table. Don't get me wrong, I love Alexx and Doc Robbins, but...this is Hammerback. He's eccentric, and kind of out there, and makes frequent references to what Hawkes refers to as the "creepy place" (usually referring to somethimg sexual). He also owns one of the coolest pairs of glasses I have ever seen in my life. But that's just me. I'm definitly working over having a Nick-meeting-Hammerback moment in this, I just have to figure out where, when, and what Hammerback's going to tell them.
You cannot watch CSI:NY, and not love Hawkes. (iheartnickcath and I have decided that it is grounds to be whacked.) He's the coroner-turned-CSI who is a fountain of random knowledge, has the curiosity of a little kid, and, to quote myherodrowning, "the soul of a poet." The only thing I really don't like about Hawkes is that the writers don't give Hill Harper the chance to show what an amazing actor he really is by giving him more screentime, so we can find out more about him.
Det. Danny Messer is another one of those giant massive train wrecks waiting to happen. He's had somewhat smaller ones along the way, but generally speaking, he's been on this spiral since season one, and it changes direction depending on the circumstances. He has problems with authority ("On the Job," "Crimes and Misdemeanors"), which he seems to be working on and getting a handle on, ever since he lost the promotion opportunity, but he still probably doesn't have as much faith in Mac to have his back as he should. He's used to having to deal with things on his own, and no one having his back (maybe a side effect from his relationship with Louie, or his parents). He's very emotionally driven, and, moreso in season one, leans on making decisions with his gut before the evidence sometimes, and that can generally get him into trouble. However, he has matured quite a bit since season 1 (I don't think season one Danny would have handled the whole Lindsay situation from 303 that I'm ignoring quite the same way), but I still think he has quite a ways to go. And, for all intents and purposes...he's with Lindsay. The Danny/Lindsay bit is just because I can. And it's going to be fun to have her and Chris sit and compare notes.
Det. Lindsay Monroe is the new girl, straight out of Montana. She's a tough-and-tumble kinda girl, who's not afraid to get her hands dirty, and because she's new to New York, has this general curiousity about everything. She's sensible and straight forward, and although at times she can get ahead of the evidence, she can keep herself on track, rather than be completely stubborn about her opinions. She still trying to adjust to the big city, and although a persistant Danny Messer can deter that, I think she's fitting in pretty well. Again, as stated above, for all intents and purposes, 303 didn't happen, and Lindsay's with Danny.
Det. Mac Taylor is like Jim Steele in a lot of ways. He's a workaholic, and he tends not to get out much outside the office. But there's one glaring, huge difference, and that is that Mac, if he gave himself the chance, could actually probably handle a serious relationship, and would never ever consider stringing a bunch of women along the way Steele does. Mac, since losing his wife in 9/11, has but of a lot of his job before his life outside the office, and while that probably impresses his colleagues, his ability to relate to his team on a one-on-one emotional level has somewhat suffered because of that. He's like Grissom, but not nearly as far gone. Which is why I think bringing in the relationship with Peyton was good for Mac. I think it's keeping him from slipping too far down the path of turning into Grissom. Although some might have preferred it be someone already on the show (maybe Stella or Lindsay), but I think it's too soon in the show for Mac to be considering dating someone he works with as closely as he does with the two of them, and although they are using the mixing of business and pleasure as an angst point for the two of them, it's not as prominient as it would have been with Stella, and I personally like that better.

I also totally agree with you that Mac could have a successful serious relationship if he tried - if he opened himself up more, and if he managed to attain some kind of closure over Claire's death, then he really could have a loving, secure relationship. I liked him and Peyton together, and I like that even though they've now split up, Mac has learned that romance has rewards as well as risks.
As much as I want to see Mac in a serious relationship, I do NOT want that to be with Stella. I really like the deep friendship and bond they have now. Also, I think that while they're very good as friends for each other, they wouldn't work romantically.
I love Hawkes too, he's smart and sorta geeky and sweet. And he needs more screen time/stories!
Danny is a lovely, sweet guy, but definitely a train wreck waiting to happen. I do like how much he is driven by his emotions though, it makes him so interesting.
Love all your comments about the other characters too. I also think Flack is the most stable member of the team, but I'd like to see the writers unhinge him a little, make him a bit unstable for once.
