You know what, Richard L. McCormick--you suck.

For those of you not in the Jersey area, or who may not know (I don't know how much press this has been getting), Rutgers Women's basketball came in second in the NCAA championships this year, and this DJ, Don Imus, made some bastard-worthy comments about the team on his news show. (Racist and Sexist are the tems being used, but I like bastard-worthy better.) There's been this whole big controversey about it, and frankly, the Rutgers community was pissed. There was a nice big press conference, Imus apologized, and he was fired from both his positions at MSNBC and CBS radio. So Richard L. McCormick the President of Rutgers, just issued this nice statement about how he hoped that Imus getting laid off was a sign of positive change in the world, blah, blah, blah. That's all well and good.

The reason why he sucks is that the governor of New Jersey, John Corzine, was driving to the RU press conference when he was in a very serious accident on the turnpike. He's got multiple broken ribs, his sternum is broken, collar bone is broken--as far as I know, he can't breathe on his own. Does President McCormick make any mention of the governor in his little statement to the students, and how we should keep him in our thoughts?

No.

I was told that the Governor of New Jersey getting into a freakin' car crash was added in a little side note after the fact that Imus was let go from his position at CBS. I'm sorry--I was just as pissed off that this guy said what he said--but there's something wrong with that. Like Corzine, hate Corzine--the fact that he's going to be out of commission for a while, and that Richard Cody is governor again should be more than a little blurb after a piece on Don Imus's job security. And considering that he was in this accident coming to a Rutgers press conference, the least President McCormick could do is acknowledge that in a letter to his students.

...OK, I'm done now.

He sucks indeed. And hopefully he swallows, too. But, in all seriousness, Corzine is in critical condition and is lucky not to be brain-damaged because of the injuries he sustained. One would think that McCormick would have at least opened his remarks with a mention of the governor.

Some people need to hire better press secretaries.

It really doesn't make any sense.

My media professer says that hopefully this is a sign that the whole thing is reaching the end of it's rope, but I mean really--the whole Imus thing is been going on for a week now. He's a flaming pile of cow dung. We get it. The governor should get more than a two second blurb on the local news as a piece tied in to the Imus story.

It sucks alot. Personally, I would hate to be the red pick up truck driver.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2007-04-14 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah--I don't think being part of the reason why the governor's in critical condition is something you want to live down.

[identity profile] snufflesdbear.livejournal.com 2007-04-13 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I heard on BBC news about the accident. It completely sucks that it's barely mentioned. The fact he is on heavy pain killers and a breathing tube should generate SOME comment. And something more than a passing mention after Imus and the team.

Oh, and he was not wearing his "Safety Restraint" at the time.

They all suck, IMHO.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2007-04-14 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know. But still, the governor was coming out to support your team. You ask your students to keep him in your thoughts and prayers. It's just the decent thing to do.

*kicks the RU president*

It's getting national coverage, I'll tell you that. I'm hearing about it here in California.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2007-04-14 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I don't watch the national news much (if I watch any news at all), but I didn't think they would be giving it that much coverage. East Coast at least, but I guess I was wrong. They do love the Women's basketball team after all.

[identity profile] afteriwake.livejournal.com 2007-04-14 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the news was about the accident, but there was some mention of the press conference and how surprised people were that the accident wasn't mentioned at all.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2007-04-14 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ahh--see that makes more sense. They should be doing stuff like that in New Jersey. Where the guy was actually governor.

*headdesk*

[identity profile] afteriwake.livejournal.com 2007-04-14 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I saw it on my local news at the five o'clock showing, too. That really is sad when I'm hearing more about it and I'm 3,000 miles away from you.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2007-04-14 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
My dad said that the Philly stations picked it up almost right away, then the national news followed, and it was almost an hour later before our local affilates picked it up. That seems kind of ridiculous.

[identity profile] afteriwake.livejournal.com 2007-04-14 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
It is. Our governor got hurt in an itty bitty car accident and national news picked it up ASAP. Then again, our governor's a famous actor, so...

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2007-04-14 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, we aren't so lucky--although it was breaking news when McGreevey came out of the closet...

I guess we know where our priorities lie.

[identity profile] makeitstopjamie.livejournal.com 2007-04-14 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, that does suck! And he should have mentioned the governor in his speech or at least let the students know some way. That wasn't a good thing go and it definantly tops our president keeping the school open when it was below zero.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2007-04-14 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if that tops it so much. I doubt any of the students even knew that the governor had been in an accident, so I'm probably one of the few, if any, who was pissed off. Everyone would know if it was below zero outside.

[identity profile] makeitstopjamie.livejournal.com 2007-04-14 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Good point. Students don't know that much about current events unless they are directly effected by it.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2007-04-14 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah--and we were effected by this. I think the students have a right to know when the governor is going to be out of commission.
