By the time Duke calls Nathan to tell him she’s here, Nathan’s already a couple drinks in. He also doesn’t need to be told. He saw her the moment she got off the train.
She’s not Audrey anymore. That much is evident in everything from her hair to her swagger to her makeup. But he does know that if he had reached out to brush her arm, he’d be able to feel the softness of her skin, or the tickle of her hair. Part of him wants to hope against hope that Audrey will be able to break through the cracks but he knows that isn’t how it works.
This new girl isn’t going to be Audrey. She will be an entity onto herself.
But she’ll help people. Help the people of Haven who need it, and manage the Troubles, at least for a little while. And when it’s all said and done, maybe she’ll be able to help him too.
So when Duke calls and says the words “She’s back,” he already knows. But that doesn’t stop Nathan from wanting to ask all the same.
“What’s her name?”
“Lexie.” Nathan can hear the smirk at the corner of his mouth. “Rhymes with sexy.”
Nathan snorts, before rubbing at his eyes. “Do you think it’ll be different this time?”
“Probably not.” Duke is a cynic at heart. Nathan wouldn’t have expected a different answer. “But we can try.”
Nathan nods, before swallowing. “You’ll have to tell Bethany.” Duke’s niece is sticking her nose into everything these days and Nathan knows Duke has been holding back on all of the family secrets.
“That’s a tomorrow problem,” Duke replies. “For tonight—I’m just glad she’s back.”
Nathan can’t be sure he would say the same. But maybe that’s a tomorrow problem too.
