set 7 | waste your summer praying in vain [5/5] | teen wolf/tvdverse | 971
Jeremy rushes towards the end of the sewer run, but the boogeymen have vanished. Gritting his teeth, he inches further down, trying to see if there were any other shadows they could have melted into. But in the end, there’s nothing. Just the gross refuse of the sewer beneath his feet. When he’s sure they’re gone, he finds the nearest access hole and pushes his way up to the top, shoving the manhole cover to the side.
As he pushes up into the street, he finds himself surrounded. Monroe is standing at the head of the crowd, and her big burly hunters on either side of her. Jeremy does his best to keep his cool and keep the worry about Malia off their face.
“Someone warned them,” Jeremy sighs. “We were too late.”
“Are you sure?” Monroe raises an eyebrow curiously. “Because that didn’t seem like the conversation you were having with Malia Tate.”
Jeremy fights the urge to twitch, keeping his face as impassive as possible. He can’t tell how well he’s succeeding, but Monroe isn’t giving him much either. “Is that who that was?”
“You don’t know her on sight?”
Jeremy shakes his head as he pushes to his feet. “Werewolves aren’t really my thing.”
“But you still shot her.”
“She was helping them escape. I thought you wanted me to take everything out.”
“Not because she told you to?”
Jeremy’s jaw sets as he tries to hold on to his calm. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I was trying to get her to tell me where the boogeymen went.”
“Funny.” She holds up her phone and keeps playing the scene, complete with sound. “That’s not what it sounded like.”
… Damnit.
Jeremy tenses, looking over the rest of the group as though he’s trying to predict where things are going to go next.
“How long have you been working with the McCalls, Jeremy?”
“Not as long as I’ve been working with some other people.” Jeremy replies firmly, before a whoosh of air whips by his cheek. Soon, there’s a collection of vampires standing around them, ready to strike. Damon, in particular, is leaning over Monroe’s shoulder and leans in to whisper:
“Boo.”
“Keep her alive, Damon.” Jeremy props up the gun. “We won’t win this one by cutting off the head of the snake violently.”
“Oh, I am well aware,” Damon says with a grin. “This one is going to be a present, delivered to Kol Mikaelson’s front door. And well, what he does with her is his business.”
Monroe tenses, before looking over at Jeremy with betrayal in her eyes. “The Mikaelsons?”
“It’s a complicated relationship,” Jeremy replies. “And you threatened my sister. You had to know that wouldn’t stand, whether or not she’s human.”
“So you’re siding with the monsters.”
“I’m siding with the people.” Jeremy steps forward. “And they know that if they step out of line, they’ll have me to deal with. After all, I’ve already killed an Original or two.” He nods to the rest of the group. “Take them out of here. Let’s clean this up.”
The vampires head off to do their thing, some of them from Marcel’s contingent, others from Damon’s friends. Damon makes his way closer once Monroe leaves out of view, and rests a hand on Jeremy’s shoulder.
“You sure about this?”
“Not all of them need to die. If we can compel them, maybe… maybe they’ll at least have to start over from square one once it breaks.”
“Fair enough,” Damon sighs. “I still think killing them would be easier.”
“Yeah, and if we were doing it our way, maybe you would be right.” But they’re not, and they’re not looking to start a bigger war. He pats Damon on the back, before stepping away from the access hole and heading back towards the rest of the fair.
“Where are you going?”
He glances back with a smirk. “Gotta go see a girl about a bullet wound.”
When he catches up to Malia, he finds her on the midway in front of the carousel, with clean clothes and a bright smile. She runs to meet him, throwing her arms around his neck. “Did it work?”
“It did,” Jeremy nods. “Damon is taking them off to get compelled and hopefully things will trickle out from there.” He then looks her over, concerned. “Are you okay?”
“I’m good. It was a through and through, so I healed real quick.” She makes a face. “Peter is less than pleased though, so steer clear of him for a while.”
“I think I’ll survive,” Jeremy sighs, leaning in to rest his forehead against hers. “I’m sorry, though.”
“I told you to,” she murmurs. “Nothing to be sorry about.” She tips his chin back, catching his lips with hers and kissing him warmly, as though to prove that there are truly no hard feelings. He leans in and eagerly kisses her back, letting his hand smooth down her back warmly to keep her close. For being a loose, friends-with-benefits kind of situation, he can feel this turning into more.
He just hopes, for once, that they both agree.
Eventually Malia breaks the kiss before wrinkling her nose a bit. “You smell like a sewer.”
Jeremy laughs, keeping her close. “Yeah. Unfortunately, that’s a side effect of being in one.”
Malia wrinkles her nose. “Now that everything’s wrapped up, maybe we can head back to my place and clean up.”
“Yeah.” Jeremy nods with a smile. “Think Peter’s going to crash our fun again?”
Malia laughs before shaking her head. “No, trust me. He learned his lesson last time.” And with that, she takes his hand and drags him back towards the parking lot.
They had a win. For now, at least, they deserve to celebrate it.
