[Part 2]

The meeting looks almost casual about the setup.

Jerry leads Jeremy to an open area of the carnival when he arrives. The eating area has several groups of hunters scattered across the way, munching on carnival food and creating the pretense of enjoying the evening. Jeremy counts them as he goes, three at one table, four at another, trying to calculate how bad this will be before things get started. Most of them have guns on them, if not knives and other kinds of weaponry, but Jeremy keeps his face neutral.

He’s here to be friendly, after all.

The chatter is a combination of war stories and gentle ribbing, giving the sense of camaraderie and commonality that he’s found in most hunter spaces. It’s comforting, but he tries not to lose sight of the game. He’s not here for them—he’s here for Monroe. But he wants to believe that once finished, he’ll be able to find a better way for all of them.

“Here he is.” Jerry says as he stops in front of one table. Tamara Monroe rises to her feet in response, smiling softly as she extends a hand to him.

“Jeremy Gilbert. You have quite the reputation.”

“Hard to tell if that’s good or bad,” Jeremy replies, shaking her hand firmly.

“Good. Mostly.” She gestures for him to take a seat and he does, settling back in the chair with a casual ease. “Your sect, I’m told, is very… effective. But I’ve also heard some things from Mystic Falls and you left behind quite a mess.”

“That depends on your definition of mess,” Jeremy replies. “A lot of the things that happened in Mystic Falls were beyond my control.”

“Is that why you left?”

“It’s why I felt my talents were of better use elsewhere, yeah.” He shrugs. “The people I cared about tied my hands. They wanted to handle things, so I let them handle it.”

“Do those people include Caroline Forbes? Or Bonnie Bennett? Or even your own sister—she’s a doppelganger, I think they call it?”

She’s trying to rile him. He can feel it. He does his best to keep that stirring of anger at the mention of Elena out of his system. “Doppelgangers are harmless.”

“Then why does it seem like death follows them wherever they go?” She raises an eyebrow. “I mean, let’s be honest—I’m surprised that Mystic Falls still has a human population. Especially considering that they emptied the town a few years back to become a haven for a vampire gang?”

“We took care of that, actually.” Jeremy replies. “All of them are dead now. And we did what we had to do to keep people safe.”

“I’m just confused.” Tamara flashes him a warm smile. “For a member of the Brotherhood of the Five, you seem to have left a lot of vampires alive.”

“Well, some of them are human now. If they’ve learned the error of their ways, then I leave them alone.”

“What about the ones that aren’t? Like… Milton Greasley, at the Salvatore School for the Gifted.”

The response should be an easy one. MG’s a good kid. He hasn’t hurt anyone. But Jeremy knows that’s not the answer that’s going to get him anywhere, so he shrugs. “Not my problem. I’m told that Caroline is handling it, and I only step in if I have to.”

“So you take the word of a vampire over the safety of humans.”

“I take the word of a vampire who knows that if she doesn’t keep it, I’m going to come in and finish the job.” Jeremy replies with a small shrug. “Sometimes the most efficient way of keeping someone in line is being the threat looming over their shoulder.”

Monroe’s hard to read. Her face is impassive as she weighs her options. He doesn’t know what she wants beyond reckless destruction, so he does his best to keep his cool and waits for her to decide.

“I think I’d like to have a test run. I know they say that you’re some kind of mystic hunting prodigy, but I think I need to see it in action for myself.” She makes a gesture with her hands, and some hunters gather around her table, blocking out the prying eyes as she moves the table in front of her. Resting beneath her feet is a sewer grate, and she taps her foot against it.

“Living under this carnival is a colony of boogeymen. Not your true prey, but still a fair test of your skills, no?”

Jeremy gives a small shrug in return. “Fair enough. What’d you have in mind?”

“Take out the colony. We’ve installed some short range security cameras so we can see your progress. Hopefully, you can make the best of an unpleasant situation.”

Jeremy’s not sure how he feels about that, but hopefully the boogeymen are the type to terrorize the local humans, not just trying to live their lives. He swallows before nodding in agreement. “Sure. Let’s do it.”

“Fantastic.”

He steps back as they remove the utility hole, allowing light to filter into the ground below. Jeremy pauses long enough to check his weapons—a hunter goes nowhere unarmed. Then he crouches down and lowers himself slowly into the underground.

“Good luck, Jeremy,” Monroe offers as her parting words before closing the sewer over his head.

“Glad I wore my good shoes,” Jeremy mutters to himself, before reaching behind his back and pulling out his gun.

It takes a moment for his eyes to adjust before he continues to make his way through, trying not to recoil from the smell and the rot. The further he gets in, the more he doubts that there are any boogeymen down here, causing trouble. That this is just a test to shoot whatever comes knocking. But he sees the red pinpricks of light from the nightvision cameras as he makes his way through.

He is being watched. At least that much is true.

He hears voices up ahead, and he brings up the gun more, ready to shoot if it comes to it. Keeping his feet light, he does his best to remain undetected. But as he rounds the corner, one voice takes on a familiar tone. His eyes widen, and as he rounds the corner, gun up, he sees the worst-case scenario.

There are boogeymen in the sewer. That much is true. And standing with them, trying to negotiate, is Malia Tate.

Malia’s head snaps to the side when she catches his scent, and her eyes widen. “I thought you were in the meeting.”

Jeremy shakes his head. “You shouldn’t be here.”

And this plan has officially gone sideways.
