“Hey.”

Two men sit down at Jeremy’s table, bringing their beers with them. Jeremy looks up to appraise each of them and he can read “hunter” from each of them before they even go further. From their plaid shirts to their heavy combat boots to how they are being way too casual, he can tell that these are the kinds of people who think that they know everything there is to know about the world. They know secrets you don’t.

They don’t impress Jeremy much, but he might as well hear them out while they’re here.

“Can I help you?”

“You’re Jeremy Gilbert, aren’t you?” The taller of the two asks.

“Depends who wants to know.”

“I’m Jerry, this is my brother Dale. We’re hunters like you.”

“I doubt you’re a hunter like me.” He looks unimpressed, and goes back to his food, prepared to check out of the conversation. The two men exchange a meaningful look before playing the next card they have.

“You’re a member of the Five.”

Okay. Maybe they know a few more of the secrets of the universe than most. Jeremy straightens in his seat, leaning forward and resting his elbows against the table. “And what do you two know about the Five?”

“The Brotherhood of the Five is a line of ancient mystical hunters bred to take out vampires.” Dale comments before taking another pull of his beer. “Said to be protecting a cure for vampirism.”

“They were. Not so much anymore.” Jeremy shakes his head. “Hate to break it to you, boys, but if you’re looking for the cure, it’s long gone.”

Jerry waves a hand, clearly not interested in that. “No, no. It’s just… do you hunt more than just vampires?”

“Like what?” Jeremy raises an eyebrow.

“Like werewolves.”

That immediately gets Jeremy’s hackles up, tension building in his shoulders because no, he doesn’t hunt werewolves. Werewolves don’t have enough control over the choices they make in that form to make things fair. The deaths are tragedies, but they aren’t as vindictive as vampires—except for the off chance when they are.

“Depends,” Jeremy replies, crossing his arms in front of his chest. “What werewolves are you looking at, exactly?”

“Have you ever heard of a guy named Scott McCall?”

“You’d be hard-pressed to find a hunter worth his salt who hasn’t heard of Scott McCall.” Jeremy takes a swig of his own beer. “He’s the first True Alpha in centuries.”

“They call him that,” Dale points out. “But how do we know for sure, you know?”

“Why would they lie about that?”

“Because he’s building an army.” Jerry says these words with such conviction that even Jeremy almost believes him. “Gathering supernatural creatures across the country. We have a strong reason to believe that he wants to turn this into an overt war.”

“Well. That sounds like you have a pretty big problem.”

“We have a problem.”

“How is this true alpha my problem, exactly?”

“He’s got vampires in this army. Powerful ones. Never mind that he’s also gathering murderers like Peter Hale.” Jeremy’s face flinches, and Dale smiles as he continues. “You have heard of him.”

“Hard not to. He leaves an impression.” Jeremy finishes his burger before reaching for his beer again. “So you want me to take out this true alpha because you can’t handle it?”

Jerry extends his hands. “I just think you seem pretty committed to the cause. Might as well join us, extend your numbers. Best for everyone, right?”

Jeremy nods slowly before twisting a finger at the both of them. “So, are you two in charge of this little plan of yours?”

They both seem offended at the question, as though they both should seem competent enough to be “in charge.” Jeremy immediately cuts them off at the pass, not really interested in hearing them try to bluster.

“Look, you’re not the first hunters to come at me with an offer to deal with Scott McCall. There’s been a pair of hunters at the last five stops I’ve made, which means someone wants me pretty bad. And it’s not you guys. So I’ll tell you what. Maybe I’ll help you out. But I want to speak to the person in charge first.”

The two men look at each other uncertainly. Jeremy shrugs as he finishes his beer.

“I don’t think it’s that big an ask. But it’s up to you.”

“Just… give us a minute, alright?”

The two men pull off to the opposite corner of the room, and Jeremy prepares to call their bluff. Once he finishes his fries, he signals the server for the check. He doesn’t intend to wait long. He’s pulling his jacket back on and grabbing his bag to head out the door when he hears a voice over his shoulder.

“Gilbert, wait!”

Jeremy turns back to face them, expression impassive as he waits for their response. They look uncertain about this, but Jerry nods in acknowledgement.

“There’s a carnival taking place about thirty minutes from here. We’ll be there to deal with some other cryptids that are feeding on people as they travel. The boss’ll be there too.” He passes Jeremy a card with a number scribbled on it, and nods. “The purge is happening Friday. I’d be there Thursday.”

Jeremy nods in agreement before taking the card from him. “I’ll call if I can’t make it. But I guess I’ll see you Thursday.”

He heads out the door, making his way towards his SUV parked in the parking lot. He climbs in and watches out his rearview mirror until the two hunters either head back into the bar or to their car. After smoking a cigarette, they head back out to their car and drive off into the night. Then Jeremy smiles and holds up the card between his fingers.

“They finally took the bait.”

Malia reaches forward from the back seat and flashes him a grin. “Good. Time to finish this once and for all.”
