There’s not much that escapes Kate’s attention when she sets her sights on something. She sees the way Peter’s slower on the uptake, slower to respond. He’s sleeping more, eating less, and all of that adds up to him not being well. However, her husband is a werewolf. If he’s starting to get sick, something is wrong. She doesn’t want to worry about the winter outlasting her husband.

After all, he was supposed to be the one to outlast her.

She follows him to his favorite spot on the grounds, with the bright autumn foliage by the water. She sits next to him. “We shouldn’t go to Ireland.”

Peter frowns, partially not noticing her arrival but also because he doesn’t understand.

“What do you mean?”

“Don’t do that. Not with me.” She is not his daughter. She’s his wife. “You’re not well, Peter.”

His lips set in a frown as he stares out at the water. “That doesn’t mean we should hold Malia back. Human’s travel when under the weather all the time.”

“Yes, and it’s the fact that you’re not human that concerns me.” Kate frowns as well. “Have you spoken to Deaton?”

“No.” Peter sighs. “I have my theories, however.”

“Then give us time to explore them. I don’t think Malia is itching to get to Ireland anyway.”

He takes a deep breath before nodding and conceding. “Fine. But Kate, if this is what I think it is—”

She cuts him off at the pass. “We explore our options. No goodbyes until everything’s been exhausted.”

“Fine.” He turns his eyes back to the water before taking her hand. She swallows, squeezing his hand gently. It will be a long road, but she is determined to find a solution.

She’s not ready to let him go that easily.
