just put yourself on top of my tree | seth & wynonna | 1,557
“Relax!” Nicole’s voice comes from the porch below him. “It’s just Wynonna.”
“What’s Seth doing on the roof?” Wynonna asks as her footsteps crunch against the cold ground, and Seth relaxes some, adjusting his grip to continue the task at hand.
“Putting up Christmas lights,” Nicole explains before calling up after him again. “You good up there, Gecko?”
“Yeah,” Seth sighs before shifting so he can sit along the top of the roof and giving Wynonna a wave. “Hey, Wy.”
“Didn’t know you were the designated light monkey,” Wynonna smirks back at him before turning back to Nicole. “So what are you doing out here?”
“Oh, I’m keeping watch for your mother.” Nicole nods. The other woman is bundled in a blanket, a steaming hot cup of something between her fingers, and he can already tell from her tone that it was spiked. It was turning into that kind of Christmas already.
Wynonna’s eyes bug in return before glancing between the two of them. “And why are we keeping watch for Momma?”
“Because last Christmas, we sent Seth up to the roof to set up the lights because we decided that the world was fucked, so we might as well be a little festive.”
“We were a little drunk, and Rachel and Kate were steering the ship,” Seth nods in agreement, as Nicole continues to explain:
One year earlier …
“Little to the left!” Rachel shouts up from the ground as Seth tries to manage and arrange the lights according to their specifications. She’s been giving instructions for the better part of an hour, and while it’s not the most artful Christmas light display anyone has ever seen, it’s giving it a bit of color.
“Are you sure you should be up there like this?” Kate’s voice follows, concerned. “You and Nicole had a lot of that bottle. Maybe Rachel and I should do this.”
“Nope,” Seth shakes his head. “Because if one of you falls and gets hurt, there won’t be a responsible adult to handle it. If I fall and get hurt, we still have you.”
He can already picture the annoyed look on Kate’s face as she processes that. “That makes zero sense, Seth.”
“Trust me. We’ll be fine.”
As soon as the words leave his mouth, a car door slams behind them, and a sharp, angry voice shouts over the two teenage girls. “What the fuck is going on here?”
Seth’s foot slips in shock, and he scrambles forward to grab hold of the roof to try and keep himself steady, but he can already feel that not going well. “The fuck?”
“Who the hell are you?” Rachel’s indignance comes through clearly.
“Who the hell am I? I’m the owner of that goddamn house. Now, who the hell are you?”
“This is Wynonna’s house,” Kate responds in return. “And she’s not here right now, so you need to leave before I call the sheriff.”
“You’re going to call the sheriff on me, in my own home? I should be calling it on all of you. And who the fuck is on my roof?”
Just as she says that Seth feels his fingers slip off the edge of the roof and sliding into a free fall before landing hard on the ground, he hears the CRUNCH! of bones breaking, and he gives a sharp cry of pain.
“Oh my God, Seth!” Kate appears over him, and he can feel the pain in his arm. He looks up at her desperately, his drunk brain still not processing everything that’s happening.
“Is it bad?” He asks helplessly. “It feels bad.”
Next, Rachel appears, followed by an older woman with a gun in her hand and an angry expression that reminds him a little of Wynonna, but older. “Dude, I think the bone’s sticking out.” Rachel is grinning, and Seth’s brow furrows.
“That does now sound like something to be happy about, Valdez,” Seth replies, but before Rachel can continue, the woman he doesn’t know is shoving herself into his line of vision.
“My name is Michelle Gibson. You want to tell me what you’re doing on the roof of my daughters’ house before I give you more to worry about than a broken arm?”
Seth’s eyes widen. “Fuck me.”
“Damn straight. Now answer the goddamn—”
“Michelle, don’t!” They all turn to see Nicole standing on the porch, gun in one hand while holding up the other in a sign of surrender. “He’s a friend. He’s a friend, I swear.”
Michelle straightens, turning her withering stare on Nicole instead, and speaks in a voice that’s so calm, Seth doesn’t have to know her to know that she’s trying to be scary. “Nicole, where are Wynonna and Waverly?”
Nicole flinches, clearly still a little drunk, before holding up a finger. “You wouldn’t have happened to have checked your voicemail, by any chance?”
“Oh, sweet baby Jesus,” Wynonna finally looks up from burying her face in her hands. “You guys called and told her that we’re back right?”
“You mean like all those messages I left that you guys were gone in the first place that she didn’t check?” Nicole takes another long sip of her coffee. “I’m sure there’s one of them in there somewhere.”
Wynonna makes a gesture like she wants to strangle Nicole before storming off into the house. Seth sighs before looking over at Nicole with a frown. “Nice.”
“Really?” Nicole frowns as Seth starts to slide down the top of the roof towards the ladder. “Hey, where are you going, light monkey?”
Seth hops down the ladder before giving her a look. “To clean up your mess for a change.”
As he winds through the house looking for Wynonna, Rachel raises an eyebrow as she comes out of the kitchen. “What got into Wynonna? Also, aren’t you supposed to be on the roof?”
“Nicole told her out about what happened with Michelle last year.”
Rachel laughs. “Awesome. That was hilarious.”
“Not so much, Rach. Which way’d she go?”
Rachel turns and points, and Seth follows her lead, back through the house and out the other side. By the time he pokes his head out the door, she’s already on the phone, leaving a voicemail. “Look, Momma, give me a call when you get this, okay? I can explain.”
Seth waits until she hangs up before speaking, crossing his arms in front of his chest and leaning into the side of the house. “You okay?”
Wynonna shrugs. “I know my mother isn’t the easiest person to get along with, but hearing that her two remaining children had been MIA for over a year could have been handled with a little more grace.”
Seth nods. “Look, it’s wasn’t as bad as Nicole made it sound. Michelle apologized for knocking me off the roof. Nicole sobered up and was able to break it down for her a little more. She left on good terms and hasn’t been back since, though I’m not sure what she’s looking for now. Nicole wasn’t exactly in the best place at the time either. We were all doing the best we could.”
Wynonna sighs, arms crossing in front of her to keep in the warmth. “Well, hopefully, she’ll call me back, and we can put all this to rest. But you guys should have told me she was here.”
“Honestly, we were mostly just happy to have you back. It slipped our minds.”
Wynonna huffs before shrugging. “There wasn’t any lasting damage to that arm, was there?”
Seth shakes his head. “Nah. I’ve had worse hits.”
“Good,” Wynonna takes another step closer. “You mentioned she smoothed everything out with Nicole, but how did things go with you?”
Seth clears his throat before rubbing the back of his neck. “There may have been a prolonged interrogation. And Kate helped. She’s way better in a crisis than any of the rest of us.”
Wynonna laughs. “So my mother is a crisis now?”
Seth grins. “She certainly caused one. Not that I was surprised. She reminded me a lot of you.”
“In a good or bad way?”
“Definitely good. I love a good force of nature.”
Wynonna grins before looping an arm around his neck and pulling him in for a kiss. “Good to know.”
Seth hums into the kiss. “Plus, it’ll probably be way worse when Richie figures out where I am.”
Wynonna pulls back with a frown. “You know, one day you’re going to have to finish telling me that story.”
“After Christmas,” he nods because it’s an explanation he owes all of them. “But for now, I better get back out there before they start –”
“Hey, light monkey! You going to finish this or what?”
“—doing that.”
Wynonna laughs before giving him another quick kiss. “Finish fast, and maybe I’ll let you slide down my chimney.”
Seth grins. “You know how to motivate a guy, Earp.”
“It’s a calling,” she replies as she turns him around and shoves him back towards the front.
