They stop just before dinner in DC to grab something to eat and stretch their legs. Malia is more than happy to practically fling herself into the grass at the mall, staring upwards at the curtain of cherry blossoms above her and the sky beyond it.

“Comfy?” Jeremy asks as he follows with their sandwiches and she grins back at him as he settles against a tree.

“Very,” Malia replies, before shifting to press her back to the bark with him. “I’ve always done better with wide open spaces.”

“I don’t blame you.” He passes over her half of the food, before moving to dig into his own sandwich. “I was pretty sure you were going to rip off the door handle every time I had to swerve.”

“But I didn’t!” she’s quick to remind him around a mouthful of tuna salad. “I was very calm.”

“Matt is very grateful.” He then smirks before leaning in to press a kiss to her forehead. “I think you’re doing really well, though, all things considered.”

“Thanks,” she sighs, before glancing up to the rest of the world around her with a smile. “I like DC.”

He tips his head up curiously. “You’ve been here before.”

“Dance championships. Usually once a year or so with Landon and Laura.”

Jeremy nods, glancing up and taking the world in with a little more scrutiny. “What do you like about it?”

“It’s less crowded than New York. There’s more open spaces but still enough public transportation that you don’t have to be a driver if you don’t want to be.”

He nods again, trying to gauge why she’s bringing this up now, of all times. If there’s a point to it, or of she’s just making idle chatter to distract from the fact that he keeps teasing her about her car fears. He decides he’s not going to press it either way and waits for Malia to get around to the point. She usually does eventually.

“Have you been here before?” she asks, and he shrugs.

“Yeah, once or twice for school trips. Never really thought about how much I like it though.”

Malia falls silent again, taking a few more bites of her sandwich before she eventually gets around to the point of it all. “If you did, I’d be okay with living here.”

Jeremy blinks, surprise coloring his features briefly, before he pulls back, trying to determine how he should be processing that statement. “You would?”

“Yeah.”

She misses the fact that the question was designed to get her to elaborate, as Malia often does, so after a moment of silence with her not following through with his expectations, he tacks on another question.

“Why?”

She glances back at him, confused, almost as though she wasn’t expecting that kind of reaction, before she shrugs. “Most of your life is in Virginia.”

“… Okay.”

“If you wanted to be closer to them, DC is a good city where I can get around on my own for the most part, but it’s closer to Virginia.”

That doesn’t really give him much in the way of clarification, so he takes a breath and tries again from a different perspective. “But it’s pretty far from New York.”

“Yeah.”

“Do you want to leave New York?”

“No.”

“Then why are you giving me permission to move to DC?”

Malia glances back at him on that point, realizing that they’re both on separate wavelengths right now. She swallows her mouthful of sandwich, before she tries to figure out a better way to phrase it. “I’m not saying that you have to move to DC. But I’m also saying you don’t have to stay in New York because of me. That … I’ll go where you go, I guess.”

“What about your pack?”

“They’ll still be there. But Laura’s probably going to have more kids which means she’s going to need more space, and while I’m sure that Cora and Stiles are going to move out when they get married, eventually we’re going to want our own space too.”

“But you’ll be far away from them.”

“But I won’t be far away from you.” She shrugs. “I saw how it went when Cora and Stiles had to be separated all the time. They were miserable. I’d rather have to take a train to see them then have to wait for weekends or longer to see you.”

Jeremy watches her, then smirks as he leans forward. “So I guess you want me to keep sticking around, huh?”

Malia raises an eyebrow because they’ve been doing this thing for a while now. They’ve only very loosely put labels on things, but Malia thinks she’s made it plenty clear her investment in this relationship. “Are you thinking about not?”

“No,” Jeremy shakes his head. “I’ve actually been trying to talk to Jenna about how she would feel if I wound up staying in New York permanently.”

“Oh.” She pauses. “Good to know.”

He snakes one arm around her. “I want to be with you. And it’s good to know that you want to be with me too.”

“We don’t have to stay in New York if you don’t want to be.”

“I don’t know where I want to be yet. I just know that I want to be with you. So maybe, while I’m figuring out where I’m at with school and work, we could try getting something for just us? And keep our options open otherwise.”

“I’d like that.” She glances back to him with a smile. “We can probably get a pretty nice place.”

“Benefits of having a wealthy girlfriend, I guess.” He grins as he leans in to kiss her. “I think this is going to be good.”

“Me too,” Malia nods, before turning to where Matt and Elena are cuddling on the mall. “How do you think your roommate is going to take it?”

Jeremy smirks before pulling her in closer. “I think he can learn to live with it.
