The five year-old’s face is one of rapt concentration as she crouches in her tutu, carefully maneuvering each of the tiny black and white cars into place. Each one has it’s own place in the gradient she doesn’t realize she’s creating, and it’s stretching across the floor of Hale family living room. If she hears the footsteps that come to a stop behind her, she doesn’t acknowledge them, just keeps them focused in front of her.

“Hey, Luce,” Derek’s voice comes from over her shoulder, and she doesn’t look up, but she does respond.

“Hi, Daddy.”

“Did you have fun at dance class?”

“Uh-huh.”

There’s another pause of silence as she scooches in a few more cars, and a couple of footsteps as Derek makes his way closer. “What’re you doing with Jacob’s cars?”

“Nothing,” she says, as she picks up a couple more. “Just making a pattern.”

“Making a pattern, huh?” Derek moves to crouch down next to her. “Do you want some help?”

“Yes, please.” She hands off some of the cars to him, and between the two of them, they finish the gradient in question, Derek taking each of his daughter’s instructions very seriously. Once they’re done, they stand back, looking at it from above and Lucy beams.

“It looks like my friendship bracelet.”

“Yes, it does,” he says, reaching down to pick her up and set her in his hip. “It looks very cool. What made you think of it?”

She shrugs. “I just thought it would look nice.”

“Well, you were right.” He turns to face her. “You did a great job.”

She beams, ready to say something else when her little brother charges into the room, smashing through their hard work. Lucy gasps, dismayed.

“Jacob, no!”

Derek laughs. “Guess we’re starting all over again.”
