laurel & tyler | dctv/tvdverse | 425 words
“Yep.”
There’s a long pause as Laurel takes that information in, processes it, and still can’t seem to compute what he’s talking about. It isn’t that she doesn’t believe Tyler. Her life has consisted of both metahumans and mystical influences, so you would think that vampires wouldn’t be such a hard leap to make, but all the same, she can’t help but squint at the prospect.
“Vampires?”
Tyler smirks at her. “You spend all your time with people with superpowers, but vampires are tripping you up.” He’s clearly teasing her, but she is also thinking the same thing, and she gives a slight cringe in response.
“Metahumans at least have science behind them. I understand why they happened. How … how do vampires work exactly?”
“It’s … transferable immortality spell, I guess.” He moves to sit next to her and leans back against the couch. “You die with vampire blood in your system, you wake up in transition. Then you have to drink human blood in order to complete it.”
“Ew.”
“Yeah.”
“It sounds like it would be a terrible way to live.”
Tyler shrugs as he sips his beer. “Kind of. But when you don’t really have another choice and don’t want to die, what can you do?”
Laurel sobers a bit at that, because that’s the part of vampirism that people don’t really talk about, but she still doesn’t think it would be a life she would want to live. She’s spent most of her life trying to protect people – being forced to live by stealing from them doesn’t seem fair. Still she swallows hard because she can understand not wanting to die too.
“No, you’re right.” She shakes her head. “I’m just still trying to wrap my head around this vampire thing.”
“Wait til I tell you about the werewolves.”
She turns and blinks at him again, before she shifts and pushes up to look at him more. She knows she needs to break the tension, so she does it in the best way she knows how.
“Okay, important question,” she pauses for emphasis. “Do these vampires sparkle and is there a danger of a vampire werewolf love triangle?” Tyler just gives her a look that he does not appreciate her humor and but she doesn’t relent, her eyebrows raising expectantly. “No, I really need to know. I’ve had enough love triangles in my life to last a lifetime.”
“If you weren’t my boss, I’d probably hate you a little right now.”
She laughs. “I’ll take that as a no, then.”
jessica & bruce | dc extended universe/marvel cinematic universe | 400 words
(Also, it should be noted that Bruce didn’t really “let” this happen, Dick forced his hand, but Jessica doesn’t care, he should have known better.)
Then come the bets. Jessica can tell from the way his shoulders tense alone that Bruce really, really hates the bets. He hates the bets enough that he resists Jessica getting put on comms for a long time because he doesn’t want to have to hear the words “ten bucks says.”
She’s sitting at his desk, transferring the pictures over from her camera as she and Dick shoot the shit, and there’s no mistaking the tension in Bruce’s voice as he makes his way in, leaning against the doorframe of his study with a tense look on his face. “Don’t you have a patrol to get to?”
Dick raises an eyebrow with a smirk, before reaching over and patting Jessica on the shoulder with a nod while he gets up to go. Jessica nods in return, waiting until Dick’s car is leaving the driveway before she looks up at him and shakes her head. “He really gets under your skin, doesn’t he?”
“I wouldn’t say that.” Bruce crosses his arms in front of his chest. “I just don’t see what the point is in sharing all of that.”
“What’s the point in making you seem human?” she smirks. “Gee. I just don’t know.”
Bruce rolls his eyes and switches back to business mode immediately, shuffling away the parts of himself that Dick gets to see once in a while, and focusing on the matter at hand. Jessica recognizes the switch well and just fills him in on the details, before she disconnects her camera and gets ready to leave. As she’s packing up, she can’t help but smirk at the huff as he cracks again.
“Were the bets really necessary though?”
Jessica laughs as she makes her way to the door, before tipping her head to the side. “You did realize I was always betting on you, right?” And with that, she heads out to let him ponder that for a moment.
bo & derek | guardians | 439 words
The mesmer doesn’t look convinced by her statement, one hand stretched out in front of him holding Derek in place, looking like he might relish the thought of forcing him to claw out his own heart. Bo waits for a moment, seeing if he’ll relent, before gritting her teeth and putting a little more force behind her words.
“Vex.”
“Do you know who he is?” Vex glances back and the anger gives way to something more along the lines of betrayal, and given the complications of the situation, Bo couldn’t really blame him. “Do you know what he did?”
“I do.” Bo holds up her hands as she makes her way closer. “But he was mind controlled, the same way I was. He’s not the real enemy here.”
“How do you know he’s really free of him, then?” Vex raises an eyebrow. “How do you know he isn’t going to bring Thanos here to destroy us all? Or take you back?”
“Because I know,” She rests a hand on Vex’s shoulder gently, giving it a small squeeze. “Just trust me, okay?”
Vex huffs for a moment, before dropping his hand, and Bo can see the way Derek’s posture caves and drops indicating that he’s in charge of his own body again. “You’re lucky I like her.” is his last pointed comment before he shuffles off into the bad and Bo watches him leave with a sympathetic look before she comes closer.
“You okay?”
“I thought all the Mesmers were dead.”
“Most of them are. But Vex was helping break me out of Thanos’ control at the time, so he was off planet when you guys cut through.”
There’s a look on Derek’s face that’s hard to read at first, a kind of regret mixed with frustration. “He shouldn’t have to forgive me.”
“I know he doesn’t. Technically he hasn’t. But if you’re going around looking for forgiveness from everyone you hurt, you’re going to be waiting a while.”
“I know.” He’s quiet for a moment, before shaking his head a bit. “I just don’t really know where to start.”
“You’ll figure it out.” Bo drapes an arm around his shoulders, giving him a small squeeze. “And until then, you’ve got the rest of us to nudge you in the right direction.”
Derek offers a small smile in return, before nodding and beginning to follow her lead to the bar. “Aren’t you worried about Vex being angry that you’re helping me?”
“He’ll get over it,” Bo replies softly, before giving a small shrug in return. “And if he doesn’t, I was never that fond of him anyway.”
sam & patience | regency au | 498
It’s not very ladylike for her to run, but as already mentioned, she is short on time.
She rounds over the top of the hill, letting it carry her momentum further and further until she realizes she’s going far too fast, stumbling over some of the clumps of grass with a small “eep!” It’s at that moment that Sam steps out from his place at her grandmother’s bench, and his eyes widen when he sees her coming.
“I can’t stop!” she flails for a moment, expecting Sam to move out of the way, but instead, he stands his ground, easily catching her around the waist. She feels herself swing into a bit of a dip, and she stares up at him for a moment in surprise, before Sam pushes her up and sets her back on her feet again.
“You seemed to be in a hurry. There was no need to rush.”
“I just knew I was running late.”
Despite the fact that Patience had been set back on her feet again, she can still feel Sam’s hands on her waist, and she doesn’t particularly want them to move. Nor does she want to move the hands resting on his shoulders, but she knows that she should eventually step away, and go back to a proper courting distance. Still the feel of his hands is nice, and there’s an inkling that he may just …
He watches every move she makes, weighing each micro expression as though he may have been trying to figure out how to make his next move without giving any of it away. the decision comes in that same moment. He takes a deep breath, before leaning to kiss her, a press of lips against hers that she’s never experienced before, but she doesn’t pull away. Instead, she waits until he breaks the kiss with a frown.
“I’m sorry. I probably shouldn’t have done that.”
“No, no, it’s alright.” A slow smile crosses her face and a blush coloring her cheeks as her head ducks. “I liked it. And … I don’t suppose I would mind if you did it again.”
A slow smile stretches across Sam’s face and he nods in agreement, before reaching to pull her closer again. “I am very happy to hear it. But probably not in the open where your father could accidentally see it?”
She pauses, then grins as she reaches down to take his hand and lead him away. “I know just the place.”
mercy & patience | regency au | 947
Mercy looks up from the book she’s reading to see Patience standing across from her, wringing her hands together. She’s clearly nervous, but Mercy had made it clear when she came to stay with her that she could ask her anything. “Of course.” She gestures to the lounge next to her. “Sit.”
Patience hesitates, before moving to sit next to her. There’s a pause as she tries to phrase the question properly, but in the end, there is nothing left for her to do but be blunt. “Why did you sleep with my father?”
Mercy tips her head to the side for a moment, because she can see the logic in the question. She isn’t sure if she’s searching for absolution for her father, or for a hard truth she doesn’t want to put words to on her own, but in reality, the real answer is somewhere in the middle. She sighs, before shifting to settle more comfortably.
“There were a number of reasons, really.” She takes a deep breath before she continues. “But the ladies used to talk about him. Not the way you think but … when it comes to knights, it’s hard to know who we could be safe with. Some were more of a scoundrel than others. Your father was not one of the scoundrels, but there were whispers about his … prowess, let’s say.”
She wrinkles her nose a bit, and Mercy laughs.
“You were the one who asked, darling.” She sighs. “Anyway, the London tournament was coming up and shortly before that I was told I was to be married to the Duke of Concord. Now, the duke was a nice man, and he had always treated me kindly, but he also happened to be a great deal older than I. I, being a shallow young woman, was not particularly pleased with the match.”
Patience nods for a moment, because she can understand that, if nothing else. “So it was impulsive? You reacting badly to the marriage.”
She nods once. “You cannot tell your father this, but … I had already decided it would be him before I went to tourney that weekend. I had heard from other women that he was a flirt, and not seeking commitment from the women he laid with, but he was kind and considerate of his partners, which is more than you could say for a lot of knights, who were mostly looking out for themselves. I thought it would simply be the one time, and no one would ever know.”
Patience swallows a bit at that. “But all it needed was the once.”
Mercy gives her a softer look. “My father was furious when he found out. But my husband … he understood.” There’s a pause and a faint smile. “I remember so clearly, after he sent my father away, he sat me down and said ‘Mercy, I’m well aware I’m no prize for a young girl such as yourself.’ He was far kinder to me than he had any right to be.”
Patience looks as though she disagrees, and Mercy can understand why. It’s because of that same husband that Patience is just getting to know her mother now, at seventeen, rather than her having been there all her life. “But not kind enough to let you keep me.”
“If you were a boy, he would have.” She sighs. “He needed an heir, and he knew that Hale children were always healthy. No one would have ever had to know. But if you were a girl, then I could decide what to do with you, but you couldn’t stay with me. I figured either way, you would have a good father.”
Her daughter sighs softly, her shoulders slumping a bit. “Did you ever regret it? Any of it?”
Mercy’s quiet again, turning her eyes over one of the balconies, before giving a small shrug. “I think that things worked out the way fate intended them to. Your father found a woman he loved, and he cared for you, and you had a good life. Are there things I wish I could have had with you? Of course. But … no. I wouldn’t categorize it as regret. And I certainly don’t regret that night with him. I got to have that experience on my own terms, rather than my father or my husband’s.”
Patience shakes her head. “I just can’t imagine ever … letting go like that.”
“Don’t you have a lord who’s wooing you?”
The younger girl blushes. “How did you know about …?”
“Sam? I still have my ear to the ground in many ways,” Mercy smirks a bit. “But you don’t ever feel like you want to … let go with him?” Patience plays with her hair, nervous for a moment. “You can tell me, Patience. I won’t judge you.”
“I do,” she admits softly. “But … I always worry that if I were to wind up where you did … ”
“Like father or mother, like daughter?” Patience nods, and Mercy wraps an arm around her, squeezing gently. “I understand that. And there’s nothing wrong with following those rules. But when the time comes, and those rules no longer matter, don’t hold yourself back. Moments with him will be moments where you can be truly free.”
Patience nods again, before glancing back to her. “Thank you. For telling me.”
“Of course,” Mercy smiles. “Now what do you say we go out for the evening, and see what kind of trouble we can find?”
Patience laughs, before nodding. “Sounds dangerous.”
Mercy shrugs. “We all could use a little bit of danger every now and then.”
