“Vampires.”

“Yep.”

There’s a long pause as Laurel takes that information in, processes it, and still can’t seem to compute what he’s talking about. It isn’t that she doesn’t believe Tyler. Her life has consisted of both metahumans and mystical influences, so you would think that vampires wouldn’t be such a hard leap to make, but all the same, she can’t help but squint at the prospect.

Vampires?”

Tyler smirks at her. “You spend all your time with people with superpowers, but vampires are tripping you up.” He’s clearly teasing her, but she is also thinking the same thing, and she gives a slight cringe in response.

“Metahumans at least have science behind them. I understand why they happened. How … how do vampires work exactly?”

“It’s … transferable immortality spell, I guess.” He moves to sit next to her and leans back against the couch. “You die with vampire blood in your system, you wake up in transition. Then you have to drink human blood in order to complete it.”

“Ew.”

“Yeah.”

“It sounds like it would be a terrible way to live.”

Tyler shrugs as he sips his beer. “Kind of. But when you don’t really have another choice and don’t want to die, what can you do?”

Laurel sobers a bit at that, because that’s the part of vampirism that people don’t really talk about, but she still doesn’t think it would be a life she would want to live. She’s spent most of her life trying to protect people – being forced to live by stealing from them doesn’t seem fair. Still she swallows hard because she can understand not wanting to die too.

“No, you’re right.” She shakes her head. “I’m just still trying to wrap my head around this vampire thing.”

“Wait til I tell you about the werewolves.”

She turns and blinks at him again, before she shifts and pushes up to look at him more. She knows she needs to break the tension, so she does it in the best way she knows how.

“Okay, important question,” she pauses for emphasis. “Do these vampires sparkle and is there a danger of a vampire werewolf love triangle?” Tyler just gives her a look that he does not appreciate her humor and but she doesn’t relent, her eyebrows raising expectantly. “No, I really need to know. I’ve had enough love triangles in my life to last a lifetime.”

“If you weren’t my boss, I’d probably hate you a little right now.”

She laughs. “I’ll take that as a no, then.”
