there's no place i'd rather be | villagers | 300 | round 2, set 1
It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes, they get sent somewhere nice. Not that they are quick to trust it, as Hales are never quick to trust anything, but after a couple of hours of having to smell the funnel cake and hot dogs of the amusement park, they at least partake of the food.
“Do you remember the last time we were somewhere like this?”
Derek raises an eyebrow, before smirking. “You were ten and you wanted to go on the coasters with me and Laura.”
“And you stuffed me full of funnel cake and took bets on how fast I would puke.”
“Yeah, I remember.” Derek rolls his eyes. “She made me sit next to you because she didn’t think you’d make it over the first drop and she didn’t want to get puked on.”
“Which, for the record, I did.”
“You did. You made it all the way to the garbage can at the base of the coaster. We were very impressed.”
Cora smirks before tearing off another piece of funnel cake and playing with it. The smirk fades after a moment because there’s one person who still wasn’t here. “I miss her.”
Derek’s head drops, playing with his hot dog. “Me too.”
A moment of silence lapses between them, not sure how much further to go than that. In a lot of ways they’re still rebuilding their relationship into something that’s close to normal, still strangers in ways they shouldn’t be, but they’re figuring it out.
Cora tosses her empty paper boat into the garbage nearby before moving to head towards the coaster. “Bet I could make it without puking at all this time.”
Derek blinks at her, before a grin crosses his face and he pushes to his feet. “You’re on.”
