[tms] Thelma and Lousie quote
“You’ve always been crazy, this is just the first chance you’ve had to express yourself.”
“Goddamnit, Cormac, would you get off the fucking phone.”
Cormac’s eyes narrowed in his sister’s direction, but his voice was business professional light on the phone when he actually spoke. “Gracin? Could you hold on a second? Thanks.” He covered the mouthpiece of the phone with his free hand before glaring back at her. “It’s business. Why don’t you take a Midol and go shit on someone else’s day?” He immediately went back to his phone call, and Kieran had to reach forward so that Leah didn’t launch herself at their brother.
“Kieran—”
“Leah, dear. I understand that Cormac is an inconsiderate bastard. But he’s our inconsiderate bastard, so now that he’s living here, you’re just going to have to deal with it.”
Leah shook his arm off her and turned around to face him, her eyes dark and angry. “You know, I didn’t ask you all to move out here. I was perfectly content bein’ left alone to do what I had to do, but I invite one of you out here, and all of you have to come, like the Field of goddamn Dreams.”
Kieran just smirked as he moved over to sit in front of the laptop they set up on the table, taking her with him. His sister was insanely independent, always had been, no matter what her condition meant for her. Which only served to make her siblings worry more, much to her chagrin. Kieran knew how to play his cards with Leah, make sure that he didn’t piss her off, but Cormac and Leah had never gotten along, and probably never would. It didn’t help matters that the O’Malleys were never really one to pull their punches. You got with hit with the whole thing or not at all—that was just the way they did business.
Especially with family.
Leah went where she was yanked, dropping down next to her brother and curling into his shoulder. “I just wish he wasn’t so fucking smug.”
“I know, Lee,” he sighed. “I know. But one day, he will grow up and have more money than God. And when that day comes, you and I will be able to stop working for ourselves, buy incredibly large houses, and mooch off his wealth and hard work for the rest of our lives.”
Leah paused for a moment, before looking up at him again. “I am continually amazed at how you always manage to find the silver lining.”
“What can I say?” Kieran smirked, giving her shoulders a squeeze. “I have a gift.”
She was about to say something smartass back when there was a small ding! on the computer. He sat straight up, pushing his sister out of the way and shouting loudly (and possibly gratingly) into the other room. “FiFi!”
Cormac poked his head back into the room at that, eyebrows up in the air. “Gracin, I gotta go. I’ll call you back.” With that, he hung up the phone, throwing himself across his siblings lap as Fiona’s face came across the screen.
“Cormac, darling, I love you, but that’s a part of you I never want to see.”
“Fifi!” Kieran repeated as he and Leah shoved Cormac off their laps to reveal their sister’s smiling face.
“Hey, Fi,” Leah grinned. “How’s Nepal?”
“Nepal is amazing,” she grinned, leaning forward so that she was closer to the computer. “Are you all—actually in the same place?”
“We moved to New Jersey!” Kieran threw up his hands in a v-shape. “We thought Leah would be lonely and decided to join her.”
“More like Kieran got fired and Cormac got promoted,” Leah replied, elbowing Cormac in the side as he squeezed in next to her. “And they all decided to live with me until future notice.”
Fiona laughed, and that sound was like music to his ears. It had been so long since he heard it, and he didn’t know when he was going to hear it again. “Did they at least ask first before they arrived, or just show up on your doorstep like the morning paper?”
“Kieran brought the paper in from the driveway, which was nice of him,” Leah smirked. “But other than that, no—I got no notice.”
“One day we’ll learn, babe. I promise,” Fiona grinned, before tapping her hand against the table. “But tell me! What’s everyone been doing?”
They spent the next hour relaying their lives to each other before Fiona said she was out of time and needed to get back to work saving the world. Kieran closed the computer when she did, leaning back against the couch with his siblings. They managed to keep it together and seem almost like a family for three whole minutes before Kieran had to point it out.
“This is kinda nice.”
Leah and Cormac looked at each other for a moment, before making a face and shoving away from each other. “Ugh, get off me.”
“I have to call Gracin back.”
“I need something hard to drink.”
Kieran watched as they both walked away from him, and he sighed before leaning back and linking his fingers behind his head. “Well, it was nice while it lasted.”
