Bela was late.

She knew she was late. She knew that she was terribly, terribly, late but there wasn’t much she could do about it. She had gotten held up at her buy, and while she couldn’t use it as an excuse, she knew that Michael at least would understand. She pushed through Madeline’s front door, out of breath and an apology on her lips before she was stopped dead in her tracks by the sight of Nate and his wife Ruth on the couch next to Madeline.

“Nate!” is what came out instead, and he grinned at her before getting up to give her a hug.

“Hey, there Bel,” he said, pulling her in tightly and whispering in her ear. “I need a favor.”

“Favor?” she frowned, keeping her voice low as she pulled back. “What kind of—”

“There’s my shopping buddy!” Ruth said with a grin as she pushed Nate out of the way, and enveloped Bela in a bone-crushing hug. Bela cringed a bit, half-returning the hug, half-looking at Nate in confusion.

“What did she call me?” Then there was a gasp. “Ruth, I can’t breathe.”

“Oh. Sorry!” She flashed a smile as she pulled back. “The hormones are making me a little—overexuberant.”

“Right,” Bela nodded, before meeting Michael’s eyes over the top of Ruth’s head. “Michael, can I speak with you a moment?”

“Of course, honey,” Michael said dryly, before waiting for Bela to join in him the kitchen.

“Shopping buddy?” she hissed, giving him a look.

“I know. I know we should have talked to you first, but I need Nate to help me with a job, and we can’t leave her alone with Mom. They’ll kill each other.”

Bela was hesitant, and the look on her face told him as much. But she glanced back at Nate, and them back at Madeline, and she sighed. “I’m not doing this for you. I’m doing this for her. You owe me. Big time.”

Michael smiled, before leaning in to kiss her quickly. “I’ll make it up to you.”

“You better,” Bela sighed, before turning around to face Ruth again with a pasted on smile. “So. Where are we shopping?”

Ruth’s smile widened, if that was at all possible, and she threw her arms around Bela again. “Yay! This is going to be so much fun!”

“Yes,” Bela sighed, giving both the Westen men a look. “I’m sure it will be.”

“So. You and Michael have been together a long time.”

Bela glanced up at that, tipping her head to the side and shrugging a bit. “In a manner of speaking. It hasn’t all been one fluid relationship.”

“But still. It’s been a few years, right?” Ruth picked up one of the sweaters and held it up against herself. “Ever think about settling down?”

“Michael is not really the marriage type,” Bela replied, keeping her eyes on the clothes as she moved through them. “And neither am I, really.”

“Really? Not at all?”

“We’re both very busy people,” she sighed. “It’s never—come up.”

“That’s a shame. You two would make cute kids.”

Bela did a double take. “That—will not happen.”

“Why not?”

She shook her head. “I am not a mother. And Michael—with his job, we wouldn’t feel comfortable having a child around.”

“You never know,” Ruth said with a smile as her hand wandered down to her stomach. “I mean, I never thought I’d be either, and then me and Nate got the news—” She glanced back with a smile and a shrug. “This is the happiest we’ve ever been.”

Bela’s jaw tightened at that, before shaking her head and looking away. “Michael and I don’t need a child to make our relationship work.”

“No. No that wasn’t what I was—”

“I’m happy, for you and Nate,” Bela supplied before the woman could stumble through an apology that Bela didn’t want to hear. “Really. I am. But don’t presume to know anything about my relationship with Michael. As much as they are brothers, our situations are very different.”

“Oh. I knew that,” Ruth sighed. “Madeline actually likes you.”

She chuckled. “Madeline and I have a different kind of relationship than most of the girls that the boys see. It has nothing to do with you and everything to do with how fast everything happened.” She placed the shirt in her hand back on the rack. “Just give her a little time. She’ll warm up.”

“I hope so. I know how much Nate cares about her.”

“We all do,” Bela sighed softly. “She’s … the glue that holds us together.”

Ruth is quiet for a moment, putting the sweater back on the rack. “You really think she’ll warm up to me eventually.”

Bela gave her a small smile before nodding. “I think she’ll find it hard not to.”

“Good.” Ruth flashed another smile before reaching for Bela’s hand. “C’mon. I have a hankering for a cinnamon pretzels.”

The sun was coming down by the time Bela reappeared in the loft. Michael smiled at her, taking her bag from her as he got closer and wrapping his arms around her. “How was your day?”

“I was the perfect female friend,” she sighed. “I was chatty. I was emotionally supportive. I even told her your mother would warm up to her eventually.”

Michael laughed. “I hope she doesn’t expect all of that to come true.”

She shrugged against him, leaning against his chest, and inhaling slowly. She didn’t want more from Michael, because she knew she didn’t need it. She just needed this. She looked up at him, and pressed up on her toes to kiss him. “You still owe me.”

“I do,” he nodded. “I remember very clearly.”

“I think you should get started with that.”

He grinned a bit at that, before leaning in to kiss her again. “Where would you like me to begin?”

“I think you can figure it out.” She said, wrapping her arm around his neck as he picked her up and carried her back towards the bed.
