Summary: This was not how she wanted to meet Seeley’s friends.
Author’s Notes: Part of my “Cosmic Love” series, which will get a masterlist post eventually. There will be no rhyme or reason to these at all, I have a feeling.

This was not how she wanted to meet Seeley’s friends.

There really is no ideal way to meet someone’s friends when you’re a Slayer and they’re unaffiliated. It’s just the way it is. You can’t trust them with the secret fact that you’re a Slayer, and then there’s cover stories and lies, and complications. Buffy hates complications. It’s part of the reason why most of her relationships didn’t get very far.

She wanted things with Seeley to get far. And not because he looked like Angel. Her relationship with Seeley had absolutely nothing to do with Angel and everything to do with the fact that he was a good guy, who she really, really liked and wanted to like more. She wanted his friends to like her, even with the cover stories and the lies, and Buffy pretending to be a normal girl. And she could do it. She was willing to do it.

… She really couldn’t do it if she happened to save one of his friends from a vampire the night before.

Doctor Jack Hodgins, as Seeley later introduced him, choked on his drink the minute Buffy rounded the corner on Seeley’s arm, and Buffy’s eyes bugging out of her skull probably gave her away more than she would have liked. Angela, Hodgins’s wife, was looking at the two of them like there was something wrong with them, and as far as everyone else was concerned, there probably was.

“Oh God,” Angela sighed. “You two didn’t sleep together, did you?”

“What? No.”

“No. Nonononono.” Buffy sighed, shaking her head. “We just … met once. In a parking lot.”

“I accidentally bumped her car with mine at the mall,” Hodgins filled in quickly. “It was nothing. Just—really crazy to see her here.” He paused for a moment before reaching across to shake her hand. “Jack Hodgins.”

“Buffy Summers,” she said with a nod. “And actually, we should talk about that. Why don’t we go get another round?”

“That is a fantastic idea. Anyone else want another drink?”

Seeley’s hand found her arm, and he pulled her gently back against him. “What the hell is going on?”

“Slayer thing,” she whispered. “I’ll explain later. Sit. Mingle. I’ll be back.”

She was heading towards the bar before he could stop her, and Hodgins caught up with her, catching her arm and turning her to face her. “Dude. You so didn’t mention that you were dating Booth.”

“I didn’t think to bring it up. You didn’t mention that you were friends with him!”

“Uh, same!” Hodgins paused for a minute before glancing back at Booth. “Does he know about your super hero side job?”

“Yeah, of course,” Buffy sighed, rubbing the back of her neck. “That’s … how we met.”

“Oh. Okay.”

“But let’s—keep it between the two of you, alright?”

“Absolutely. I know better than to give away the heroine’s secret identity.” He grinned. “This is so cool.”

“I’m … glad you think so?” Buffy frowned. “You know, I saved you from a vampire, it’s not like I saved the world.” Which she had done before, but that was beside the point.

“Still. A vampire. That so doesn’t happen every day.”

“No. I guess not.” The drinks arrived on the bar, and Buffy went to pick them up. “If we go back to the table, can you be cool about this?”

“Cooler than cool. Cool as a cucumber.”

“Good. Okay. Let’s go be social people.” She picked up the tray and made her way back to the table, hoping that she didn’t look as awkward as she felt.

Because if she did, this was going to be a long, long night.

If they're all as good as this there doesn't need to be rhyme or reason. Loved this a lot.
