Parker - Things You Do For Family
Fandom: Leverage/Dark Angel
Title: Things You Do For Family
Author:
iluvroadrunner6
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Parker, Max Guevara, Eliot Spencer, Nathan Ford
xoverland Challenge: Big Bang
Content Warning: … A little cracky. Just a bit.
Summary: Parker didn’t give a last name because she didn’t have one.
Author’s Note: I totally think that Parker is an X5. But because an X5 is a genetically engineered super solider, not all that likely in the Leverage universe. Regardless, I only have six fics left for my Big Bang, so all the crack ideas are coming out to play. I also finagled timelines here a bit, so the current seasons of Leverage are taking place in 2021 as opposed to 2010. (They’d fit right in so well! There’s corruption everywhere!) This might turn into a series.
Disclaimer: I don’t own. They belong to Cameron and Devlin. I’m just borrowing and will put them back where I found it.
Parker didn’t give a last name because she didn’t have one.
Manticore didn’t give them first names to begin with, so it only stood to reason that they wouldn’t give her a last one either. Her name was given to her by her sibs, a small group of children who banded together and decided to become family when they didn’t have any. And when that family was threatened, they did what they had to do and they escaped.
Parker hadn’t seen her sibs in twelve years. The orders were to scatter, and scatter they did. She found Archie—or really, Archie found her—and he gave her a purpose. True, it was stealing, and true, it wasn’t exactly the most acceptable profession in the world, but it was something. And she had someone to look out for her, when no one else wanted to. When she and Archie parted ways, she was on her own again, but she liked it better that way. She didn’t have to hide anything from anyone. She just did her job, got paid, and moved on. No connections, no friends—nothing to tie her down.
And then she met Nate.
She wasn’t sure what it was about Nate that had appealed to her, but it did. She loved to steal, she loved the infiltration and escape, but here she was doing it for a reason, not just because she could, and more to the point, she had a family. She hadn’t had a family in a long time, and she didn’t realize how much she had missed it until she had it again. She had to hide what she was, that was a given. But she was allowed to be herself, which was more than she’d had around other people in a long time. She had three years. Three years of family and happiness, and all it took was one story on the news to have it all come crashing down around her.
She was just planning on disappearing. Packing her bags and taking off because the team didn’t need this crap coming down on their heads. The NSA was involved. That wasn’t something she could just pretend wasn’t happening. If they got to the others, eventually they would get to her, and that wasn’t something she could have happen. She had snuck into Nate’s place for her emergency stash and a couple other things that she couldn’t live without. What she hadn’t expected was getting caught.
“Parker?”
Her eyes came up, wide and worried when she spotted Nate standing in front of her. She knew that there was a response expected there, but she didn’t know how to give it without giving herself away. Instead she just froze, her brain going a mile a minute as she tried to come up with some kind of story that wouldn’t explain too much.
“Nate. What are you doing here?”
Stupid question, Parker.
“I live here,” he replied gently. “What are you doing here?”
Her mouth worked like a fish for a moment. “I have to go to Seattle.”
“Is something wrong?”
More of Parker’s impression of a fish. She was doing a great job with this so far. “Yeah. I can’t talk about it.”
“Why not?”
“Because it’ll only get you in trouble,” she admitted honestly. “And you don’t need this kind of trouble.”
Nate nodded, considering this for a moment, before saying softly. “Take Eliot with you.”
Parker’s jaw set and she shook her head. “I can take care of myself without Eliot, Nate.”
“I know. But take him anyway.” He gave her a small smile. “Doesn’t hurt to have backup.”
She considered for a moment, before nodding. “Okay. I will.”
“Good. Be safe, Parker.”
“I will.” She watched him as he made his way back upstairs, before reaching for her phone. This was the last thing in the world she wanted to do, but she knew that she wasn’t going to say no to having family around either. It was what they did, after all.
Lucky for her, Eliot doesn’t sleep.

“You gonna tell me what this is about?”
To his credit, Eliot had waited until they were pulling up to Terminal City to actually ask the question. He had been eerily silent the entire plane ride out to Seattle, and she had appreciated that. She wasn’t even sure if she could explain, even if she wanted to, so giving her the time to think was appreciated. But now that they were here, she knew she was going to have to give him at least something. She took a breath, before scooping up the mane of blond hair against her back, and exposing the barcode that was on it. Eliot was quiet, before moving his fingers forward to press against the mark.
“You’re from Manticore.” On one level, Parker knew she shouldn’t be so surprised. Covert government work was Eliot’s middle name, but on another, she thought that Manticore had been better than that at covering their tracks. “That explains a lot.”
“I escaped when I was nine,” she sighed, letting her hair drop back down against her back, before turning to face him again. “Been growing up on my own out here ever since. But—with everything that’s happened recently—I can’t just leave them. This is my family too.”
Eliot was quiet for a long minute before nodding. “Okay. They’ve got snipers from every corner of this thing. How do you suggest we get in?”
She shrugged. “They can’t shoot us if they can’t see us.”
“I don’t think invisibility is in your X5 bag of tricks, Parker.”
“Not what I was suggesting.”
“ … I’m gonna hate this, aren’t I?”
“Ooooh yeah.”

Parker very gently pushed the cover of the manhole up with the tips of her fingers, peering out for any sign of trouble. Once she was convinced the coast was clear, she let the lid fall off to the side, before pushing herself out, and reaching a hand down to help Eliot. He was halfway through the manhole when they heard the sound of safeties being slipped back. They both looked up and saw a small group of black-eyed X8s leaning over them, guns cocked at the ready. Parker slowly took her hand from Eliot’s holding them both up in the air, before turning and sweeping her hair off the back of her neck.
“Easy,” she said softly turning to show them the barcode. “We’re friendlies.”
They tipped their heads to the side, as though they were all considering the same thing, until a voice came from over the heads of all of them. “Parker?”
Parker’s head snapped towards the sound of the voice, eyes landing on a tall brunette. She wasn’t quite sure which one it was at first, but once she caught the scent of the person, there wasn’t a question.
“Max,” she said softly, before bounding up from the position she was in and running towards her sister, pulling her into a tight hug. Max returned it, and Parker just sunk into the hold. It was family, her first one, in a nutshell, and she didn’t want to let it go until she remembered that Eliot was still being held at gunpoint. She pulled back and glanced over, before turning back to Max. “He’s a friend. Can you—?”
“Yeah,” Max nodded, before giving them the signal to stand down. They did so, as ordered, and Eliot climbed the rest of the way out of the manhole.
“Max, this is Eliot Spencer. He’s a friend. Eliot, this is Max. She’s one of my sibs.”
“Yo,” Max nodded, and Eliot did the same. “Welcome to Terminal City.”
“Thanks,” Eliot replied gruffly. “From the sound of thing, sounds like you could use a hand.”
“Well, unless you got a couple senators in your back pocket that could get the NSA off our backs, I don’t know how much the two of you can do.”
“No,” Parker said with a smirk. “But we might be able to do something else.”
Eliot glanced over at her, and he sighed heavily, running a hand over his face. “I’m really gonna hate this, aren’t I?”
“Uh-huh,” she grinned. “It’s gonna be fun.”
