Eliot/Sophie - The Power of Suggestion

Fandom: Leverage
Title: The Power of Suggestion
Author: [livejournal.com profile] iluvroadrunner6
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Eliot Spencer/Sophie Devereaux, mentions of Hardison/Parker.
[livejournal.com profile] tamingthemuse Prompt: Aboulia
Content Warning: 302: The Reunion Job
Summary: Pulling off a neuro-linguistic plant over the course of an evening isn’t always as easy as it looks.
Author’s Note: The show teases me, so naturally I need to do something about it. I also used the looser term of the prompt, less about the disease, more about the implication.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Leverage. I wish I did. They belong to Dean Devlin, I’m just borrowing, and I will put everything back where I found it.

Pulling off a neuro-linguistic plant over the course of an evening isn’t always as easy as it looks. She had worked on Eliot for months before she got it to be as good as it was. For all his muscle, he’s surprisingly aware of everything, and if she had worked too quickly, he would have cut her off at the pass. Eliot didn’t like being manipulated and she knew it, but that didn’t stop her from at least trying. It was a game—a game for once that she actually had control over, and she wasn’t exactly willing to relinquish it all that soon, as selfish as it was. And it was selfish. She knew it. But it was also a lot of fun when she was annoyed at him. To be perfectly fair though, some suggestions didn’t happen until after certain moves were made. She wasn’t that selfish.

She wasn’t sure how they had happened, really. She knows for certain that it was after she had told them her name. That somehow seemed to gain some sort of trust with him, something that she had been struggling to do for so long, and she didn’t even realize it at first. Eliot wasn’t the kind of person to show trust verbally. Words were cheap and easy to say—she knew that better than anyone. Eliot was a person who let his actions define him, so words of trust weren’t what he used. Instead, he used food.

For the record, she approves of these shows of trust.

First it started with dinner for the team when they were working to try and figure out how to get Nate out. Then it was dinner in the office when it was only the two of them left and Parker and Hardison were off doing whatever Parker and Hardison did. That was followed by dinner at each of their respective residences, and one of those times it happened to somehow evolve into breakfast in bed—and yes, she usually found Eliot’s ‘war stories’ macho and slightly annoying, but she wouldn’t deny that the practice had certainly done him some good. When it had graduated from a one night fling to something more than that, she wasn’t really sure, but—it had been good. She didn’t want to jinx it.

“You know, you never told me why you started screwing with my head.”

Somehow, she kept managing to do just that.

Eliot dropped his jacket down on the back of her couch, and she did her best to look innocent. It was probably the one thing she never did well, aside from when she was being someone other than herself. That only earned her a glare, and she figured that it was time to suck it up and fess up before she dug herself in deeper. “It hasn’t been long,” she admitted, scratching the back of her neck lightly. “There was that time when you were flirting with that bartender at McRory’s. Thought it might be fun.”

The look on his face was so bloody smug, she wanted to smack it off him. “You did this cuz you were jealous?”

“You don’t have to look so happy about it,” she sighed, giving his shoulder a bit of a shove. “Yes. A little. Don’t let it go to your head.”

He smirked at her, before leaning against the couch. “I still don’t like it.”

“I know,” she sighed, leaning into his shoulder. “They’re all mostly harmless, really.”

“How you like your tea. Not exactly going to get me killed,” he sighed, before crossing his arms in front of his chest. He still didn’t like it. It was in how he was holding his shoulders, and the way he wouldn’t look at her directly when he wasn’t speaking to her. “Are there any other ones I should know about?”

“None that you wouldn’t like.”

And then there it was. Her name. Her real name, in the tone that told her that she was in trouble, but it was still nice to hear it in any kind of tone. She turned back to face him again, waiting until his eyes were on her, before reaching up and brushing her thumb against the back of her earlobe. This took more than a gesture, really—it was all in her body language, the way she held her weight. She was surprised when he didn’t fight it, one hand moving to her hip while the other arm pulled her closer.

“You know, all you have to do is ask.”

She shrugged as she draped her arms around his shoulders. “Sometimes a person doesn’t want to have to ask, Eliot.”

He nodded a bit as he considered that, before meeting her eyes for the first time in a while. “Anything else?”

She smiled slightly at that, before one hand moved back down, brushing against the side of his face gently. She took stock of the bruises the Iranians had given him, but that was more for later. Her thumb came up, moving lightly over his cheekbone, and the response was almost instantaneous. His head tipped in to kiss her, tightening his hold on her just enough to let her feel a little bit safer. He didn’t pull back from the kiss right away, keeping her close for the moment before speaking again.

“Just—for the record. You didn’t start using those until after we started doing—this.” There was a pause as his eyes met hers again. “Right?”

That was a little insulting, but she was sure that she had earned it. “Eliot, I just spent six months trying to deal with the fact that I don’t have connections in my life that I haven’t manipulated. Do you really think I would have manipulated you into this?”

“Hey,” he said softly, kissing her again. “Just checking.” She let out a slow sigh, leaning into him a bit and just wanting to drop the subject all together. That, he didn’t need a gesture to figure out. “So if I heard right, you took out an assassin with a fire extinguisher?”

She smirked as she looked back up at him again. “Well, we had to save the mark, after all. I’ve been told that it’s good to take advantage of whatever’s available.”

“That’s my girl.”

There was something about that statement that felt—she still wasn’t sure what it was, but every time she heard it, it anchored something that floated around in the pit of her stomach. It made her feel centered. It wasn’t something she understood, but she certainly wasn’t going to pass it up while she tried to figure that out. She gave him a small smile back before leaning back a bit, her fingers curling around a bit of his shirt.

“Why don’t we go see how good you really are at taking suggestions?”

He smirked back at her, before following her lead. “I think I might be able to surprise you.”

“Oh really?”

He closed the distance between them, pushing her up against the doorframe to her bedroom, keeping her there for a moment before kissing her soundly. She leaned into it eagerly, letting him hold her there for a moment, before continuing to move and make her way inside and closing the door behind them.

She was always, always more than willing to be surprised.

Oh wow. :D

I totally squee'd over the tea scene, and I love how this turns it into a whole relationship, and how believable and subtle it is. Oh, Sophie. <3 I love that she wants him to know that their relationship hasn't been manipulated.

(I also love your "Lonely Soul" layout -- it's a favorite song of mine.)

Don't get me wrong, I like Nate/Sophie, and I get it. But the show TEASES me with those Eliot/Sophie moments, and I have to respond in kind.

I'm glad you liked it!

(And thanks, though I can't take the credit. The layout was made for me by [livejournal.com profile] afteriwake as a gift.)

I don't really like the idea of Sophie/Eliot together. Well I didn't really until last night when it started growing on me. But I really like this story! Great job :)

I've shipped them since the pilot. But I'm an insane multishipper of doom.

I'm glad you liked it!

This is sweet. Nice insight into their relationship.

Oh, and I agree with you. I ship everybody on Leverage, too :)

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I ship everybody, but I've got a special place in my heart for these two. The show likes to tease me with 'em. It's a little annoying.

I'm glad you liked it.
