“Okay. What’d you do?”

Dean’s voice was loud. Too loud for this early hour of … almost noon. Sam groaned as he pulled the pillow back over his head, thinking that maybe, just maybe, if Sam ignored him, Dean would go away. He knew it was highly unlikely, considering Dean being ignored was never incentive to make him not do anything. It just made him want to do it all the more. He heard the footsteps of his brother moving closer, before Dean yanked the pillow off Sam’s head.

“Morning, sunshine!”

“Go away.”

“Not happening, Sasquatch. Get your ass up. You’re burning daylight.”

Sam reached up with a bit of a growl at that, grabbing the pillow back and slamming it down over his head again. “Since when do you care?” Usually Sam was the one feeding Dean that incentive, and Dean never paid him any mind. But now, for some reason, Dean wanted to give his brother hell, and he had a feeling it was more than the fact that Sam rarely ever had a hangover, and Dean had one too many.

“Oh, I don’t know. Since Jo won’t tell me what happened between you and her last night.” Sam pushed his head out from under the pillow, giving his brother a confused look. “And not in a good way.”

Sam rolled his eyes. “Again—why do you care? Maybe nothing happened.”

“Oh, something happened.” Dean dropped down on the edge of the bed and gave his brother a smirk. “I know Jo’s ‘nothing happened’ face, and the one she was giving me so wasn’t it.”

Running a hand over his face, Sam stared back at his brother, trying to figure out what he was getting at. Sam had a very hazy idea of what Jo was being uncomfortable about. He’s pretty sure he kissed her. He remembered that it was a pretty awesome kiss, all things considered. But that also might have been the alcohol talking, so he didn’t want to draw any conclusions too quickly.

“Nothing happened, Dean,” Sam sighed. “I was drunk, she was trying to keep me from getting alcohol poisoning. It really wasn’t all that entertaining.”

“Dude. Not you too.”

“As I said. Nothing happened. You’ve seen me when I’m drunk, I can barely stay focused on one thing. Can we just forget it?”

Dean watched his brother for a moment, almost as though he knew there was something more to the story before shaking his head. “Never mind. Forget it. You both suck.”

Sam shook his head, before tossing the pillow at his brother. “I’m going in the shower. Don’t take off without me.”

“Yeah, yeah. Whatever.”

***

When Sam returned from the shower, Dean was gone, and Jo was there in his place, flipping through the channels on the TV. He cleared his throat as he made his way into the room, watching her, trying to figure out where he stood on the whole him-and-Jo thing. Because he knew he had crossed a line, and he couldn’t go back on that, but—he wasn’t sure if his crossing the line was a bad thing. It had felt like a good line-crossing. And she had kissed him back.

Hadn’t she?

Jo glanced over at the sound and looked back at him awkwardly, giving him a small smile. “Hey.”

“Hey.” He paused for a minute, before glancing back towards the door. “Where’s Dean?”

“He went out to get some stuff before we hit the road,” she replied. Her hands stopped in front her, her fingers lacing together, one of the few signs that she actually was nervous. “I wanted to, uh—”

“Get our stories straight?” Sam asked softly, before sitting down on the end of the bed next to her. The tone indicated that he was kidding, at least partially, but he wasn’t really expecting any more from her than that. He couldn’t expect anything like that. Especially with what was going on with Dean. He needed to work on saving his brother. Not be distracted. But Jo wasn’t really a distraction. She hadn’t been for a long time. She was just—there, and he didn’t know what to do with it.

“There needs to be a story?” she smirked, her hands stopping and crossing her arms in front of his chest.

He shrugged. “I figure if we’re going to tell Dean nothing, we might as well make it the same nothing, right?”

“Good point,” she nodded, shifting to face him a little more. “But here’s the thing—was it? Nothing, I mean?”

“You tell me?” Sam replied hesitantly. They were talking in questions, each sentence hesitant and uncomfortable, and he hated that. He didn’t want them to be uncomfortable. What he wanted he wasn’t sure he had the right to ask for—not after what Meg had done—so that left the ball in Jo’s court, and Sam talking in questions. “I was drunk, I know, but—didn’t mean I didn’t want to.” He paused. “Lame as it sounds.”

Jo smiled a bit at that. “Not lame.” She moved closer to him, brushing a hand against the side of his face lightly. “I wanted it too. Just not when you were three drinks in and making friends with the grossest table in the bar.”

Sam laughed, before nodding. “Fair enough.” He paused again for a moment, before leaning in closer to her. “So—do I get a chance to try again?”

“I think it’d only be fair,” she grinned, starting to lean in closer again, wrapping her arm around his neck. “Just to make sure you did it right.”

He grinned at that, starting to lean in to kiss her again when the door flew open and Dean strolled back into the room again. “C’mon you two. Let’s go already. I’m ready to get the hell out of this town.” Sam and Jo jumped apart in surprise, their hands falling into their laps as Dean gave them a bit of a look. “Did I interrupt something?”

“Nope,” Sam said, glancing over at Jo, and she shook her head.

“Nothing to interrupt here,” she replied, and Dean continued to look at them before smirking slightly.

“Right. You know, if I am, I could come back. I’m sure there’s somethin’ for me to do in this town while you two—” He waggled an eyebrow at his brother, and Sam groaned.

“Dude, c’mon.” He got up at this point, starting to grab his bags.

“Hey, hey, hey, I’m all for the free love here,” Dean grinned. “In fact, I think you’re due, Sammy. You’re starting to get cranky. Both of you are, actually.” Sam’s back was to his brother, but even he could hear the unmistakable smack! of Jo’s fist hitting Dean’s arm. “Ow.”

“You asked for it.”

“So what, you’re gonna be on his side for everything now?”

“Maybe. That a problem for you?”

Dean was quiet at first, rubbing his shoulder as he followed his brother and Jo out to the car. “You both suck.”

Sam just shook his head. “Whatever you say, Dean.”

I still have to tackle CM and NCIS: Los Angeles, so maybe after that.

I've actually started to really like NCIS:LA. And I ship Deeks/Kensi so hard.

LOL .... I haven't actually seen all the show. But I could try? Maybe when the next round of [livejournal.com profile] kissbingo comes around.

I know you can. And I'm working on your birthday present, by the way. Even though it's very, very late.

I would much rather have you take your time and be superb than rush it and just have it be good, you know? And I can't wait.
