As far as Dean was concerned, they had just hit the preternatural jackpot.

Sam was starting to wonder if Dean had an actual checklist for these things.

Last he checked, his brother hated witches. It was the blood, and the small dead animals, and the way they were, to quote, “friggin’ creepy as hell” that had them avoiding all jobs involving witches as often as possible. Sam also knew that they were actual people, which made the line a little blurrier for his brother, who liked to keep things black and white. On that angle, Sam really couldn’t blame him, but for the most part the job needed to be done. What was confusing Sam was the fact that Dean was running full on into a witch hunt with no obvious reason.

“They’re witches, dude.”

“Yeah? So?” Dean raised an eyebrow in Sam’s direction as he pointed down at the print outs in front of him. “They’re one of the oldest covens in existence. They’re also super loyal to each other, very protective, doesn’t let anyone get far … ”

Sam just started back at his brother, waiting for him to get to the point already. Dean was giving him that look that came with the thought ‘where did I go wrong with you?’

“They’re lesbians, Sam. Lesbian witches.”

Sam took the paperwork from his brother, skimming it over on his own, before looking up at Dean again. “Dean, there is nothing in the lore about them being lesbians.”

“They’re from the Middle Ages, man. No one was talking about that shit back then. They were probably on the serious down low. They had to find, you know, euphemisms.”

“Euphemisms?”

“Look, just go with me on this one, alright? The witches are killing people, so we gotta go stop ‘em anyway.”

Sam sighed, shaking his head. “Alright, alright. We’ll go. But I still don’t think there’re gonna be any lesbians around.”

“You wanna bet?” The smirk on his brother’s face was all challenge and no remorse whatsoever, and Sam couldn’t help himself. He hadn’t seen a look like that on Dean’s face in a long time, so who was he to tell him no.

“Alright. Fine.” Sam extended his hand across the table. “The usual terms?”

“Let’s do this,” Dean replied with a grin, shaking Sam’s hand with fervor. “Let’s go bag us some witches.”

***

Sam had a feeling that this particular bet was going to be a hard one to call.

Because yes, the witches were totally into each other. That was … painfully obvious. Especially given the state that the Winchesters found them in. It was something that Sam wasn’t even sure was possible, given the laws of physics, but then again, these people were witches. They could do pretty much whatever they wanted.

They were also painfully obviously male.

“Dude, I so won this one.”

Dean and Sam were both chained to a wall in their basement. Sam didn’t want nor need to know why they had the chains, nor did he need to know why they had half the things they did in their collection. It would just put images in his head that he didn’t really need, and for right now, he was focusing on anything but that. His brother seemed more than willing to provide that distraction.

“Bullshit,” Sam replied. “You said they were lesbians.”

“I meant that they were lovers. You can’t fault me for getting the sex wrong.”

“I absolutely can. You said lesbian witches. I win.”

Dean gave his brother a look, but Sam was making it obvious that he wasn’t going to back down. Dean’s look changed from a glare to a sulk. “Man. I feel cheated.”

“You’re about to feel dead.”

Both brothers turned and looked in the direction of the witches again, watching as they pulled out a very extensive collection of knives. Sam’s eyes widened and then looked over at Dean. Dean just sighed heavily, before looking back at them.

“I liked you assholes better when you were lesbians.”

Sam was really starting to wish he could get Dean to shut up sometimes.
