Angell wasn’t exactly who he had in mind to take along when he was told to tail Amber Stanton. He actually thought he was going to wind up going by himself, or taking Stella maybe. But when Angell offered and told him she would bring the food, who was he to refuse? Good company and free food—what more could a guy want?

He had to admit—he was interested in more than the free food. Angell was one of the few detectives he didn’t know that well, and being stuck in a car with her for a day was definitely a way to get to know a person. The only thing was the off chance that they weren’t going to get along, and that sitting in that car together was going to be more of an ordeal than an enjoyment. But he was intrigued enough by her that he was willing to take the chance. Besides—she managed to kick Danny’s ass on a daily basis. If that wasn’t a sign they would get along he didn’t know what was.

And the talk was a good one too. About family, friends, their life before the force. Turns out they actually had a lot in common, at least in the paternal figure sense—both had a father on the force, both had brother they had to deal with. Granted the way he had to dealt with his father and brothers was drastically different from hers, but still—they weren’t exactly without teasing or prodding. And then he let that one line slip about the boys—

“Was that a line, Flack?” Did you just bust out your game on me?”

As the heat flooded his cheeks, he tried to convince himself that he hadn’t meant for it to be a line. And if he subconsciously did, he probably thought he was smoother than that and she wouldn’t notice. But he could tell from the look on her face that she was never going to let him live this down. Not in a million years.

And for some reason, he didn’t mind that too much.

I really liked this, especially the ending! The flirtation between Flack/Angell is definitely interesting to explore.
