Part 1
Matt was watching Jack like a hawk. It was almost to the point where Claire felt bad for the guy. But honestly though—Claire was starting to think that the captain couldn’t say a word without it sounding like flirting. And when those words happened to be sent in the direction of Molly Walker, well—Matt was just a liiiiiittle bit protective.
So Jack couldn’t go anywhere without Matt following him, and he couldn’t so much as have a conversation with Claire without Matt glaring bullets into the back of his World War II coat that probably only he could pull off in this era. Claire was mostly amused by the whole thing, watching him try to flirt with her, work with Mohinder, and try to lose Matt all at the same time, and he was becoming a very stressed covert agent. Claire, naturally, found the whole thing very amusing, but Jack was starting to get frustrated—and that wasn’t exactly helping his work on the project. Claire knew what she had to do, and she knew Matt wasn’t going to like it.
“I don’t like that guy.”
“I know, Matt.”
“I don’t like the way he talks.”
“To me?”
“To anyone. It’s like he wants to have sex with everyone.”
Claire knew that was probably true, but she wasn’t going to tell Matt that. Instead, she just smiled and made her way over to the readings she was supposed to be tracking and shook her head.
“He’s just being friendly, Matt.”
“Yeah, well—he can stop.”
“Matt—”
“I don’t like the way he looks at you, either.”
At that Claire actually groaned. “He’s interested in me. It’s allowed.”
“You barely know this guy.”
“Matt—I’m not sixteen anymore.”
“I know, I know.”
“And I appreciate that you’re trying to look out for me.”
“I don’t need your father attacking me from beyond the grave, Claire.”
The mention of her father stung slightly, even after all this time, but she smiled it back, tilting her head to the side slightly and giving Matt that ‘Now really—’ look. “But I’m not a little girl. I’ve been around for a half a century—I think I can handle Captain Jack.” Matt sighed heavily, and she gave him a grin. “I know it’s hard to believe.”
“I look at you, and you look the same as the day I met you, Claire.”
“You mean the day you shot me?”
She grinned teasingly, and Matt rolled his eyes. “In my defense, you told me to shoot you.”
“I did,” she said with a sigh. “I did.”
Matt sighed again before nodding. “Alright, alright, I’ll back off—but he stays away from Molly.”
“Thank you, Matt,” she said, before turning to give him a soft kiss on the cheek. “I appreciate it.”
“Yeah, yeah—I know.”

“Anything interesting?” Claire asked, standing close to Jack as she came in and looked over his shoulders.
Jack glanced back at her, realized how close she was, and then glanced over his shoulder. “Where’s the bulldog?”
“On a coffee break,” she said, before glancing down at the equipment. “Gonna answer my question?”
“Nothing particularly, still the same stall as before,” Jack said quickly, before pulling away from her slightly and turning to face her more. “The bulldog never takes a coffee break. Why is he taking one now?”
“Because I had a talk with Matt, and he’s agreed to back off a bit—so long as you stay away from Molly.”
“But I like Molly.”
“And I’m sure she likes you, but she’s Matt’s kid. He’s a bit overprotective. Even if she’s in her thirties.”
Jack chuckled slightly, before turning back to her. “Thank you.”
“Anytime, Captain.”
She started to move away from him, looking over the equipment as she went. She could feel Jack watching her as she moved, taking her in, and it was almost as though there was confusion in his eyes.
“Why did you speak up for me?”
She looked up at him with a smirk. “Because—you’re harmless. And it was effecting the work.”
He flashed her a grin at that. “Why do I have a feeling that there’s more to the answer than that?”
“Well, Captain—it’s kind of hard to romance a girl when you’ve got a bulldog breathing over your shoulder, don’t you think?”
He gave her a wider grin, before nodding slowly. “I do think, actually.”
“I’m glad we agree.”
