Her first french fry was at an out of the way diner, somewhere in the vicinity of I97.

It was her first time topside in oh, a hundred years, give or take, and she wasn't exactly feeling the love for the she-beast who had sent her down there there the first time around. So she was laying low, somewhere out of the way, and she'd hooked up with some silly little human who'd promised her a quick trip out of town in a pretty little Mustang that ran like a dream. If she'd been anything into cars—if she'd been around when there were cars—she might have taken more of an appreciation, but right now, all that she really cared about was that he was a way out of town, and he could go pretty damn fast.

Now, being that he was human he got hungry after a while, and insisted that they pull over to get a quick bite to eat. Ruby was annoyed at the delay, but then again, when wasn't Ruby annoyed. Humans were needy. She didn't do so well with needy. She followed him into the diner like a good little passenger, glancing over the menu with disinterest while he ordered the biggest burger on the menu and an entire bonus side order of fries. Boy was skinny as a stick, and she doubted that he was actually going to eat all of that, but she kept her mouth shut, still needing a ride out of here and/or human shield when the day was done.

He, on the other hand, wasn't so good at the keeping his opinions to himself thing and started nagging her about her not ordering anything. He even offered to pay, which was really sweet of him if he wasn't already going to pay anyway, but that really wasn't what Ruby was worried about. She was a demon walking around in a practically dead body—what was food really going to do for her? But when he shoved the plate of fries in her direction, and told her to at least eat something, she obliged, picking one up just to get him to shut up and ramble on about something else.

When she took a bite, a flavor exploded on her tongue that she'd never even felt before. It was like someone had just put God into a piece of food. It was delicious. It needed something, but it was delicious. The Boy was giving her a weird look, and she gave him one right back. "What?"

"Never had a french fry before?"

"Do you care?" she shot back, but not really as sharply as she usually would. French fry, huh?

Ruby was in love.

Oh I wanted so badly to not like Ruby, but damn it all you've gone and done it. This was really good.

Fun, a good read. Enjoyable.

And to think that I almost didn't read it because of your cryptic rating.

Ahh -- in my other fandom, the comms have you rate by a similar system to FF.net. It's a force of habit, I always forget to change it when I crosspost.

I'm glad you liked it, though.

Just out of plain curiousity, what is the rating system you were using? I'm familiar with fanfiction.net's K/K+/T/M/MA system, as well as the MPAA G/PG/PG-13/R/NC-13 system, and I've seen other writers that aren't from the US use the rating systems from their locales, but nothing even remotely resembling the one you used.

Not intending offense, just trying to broaden my horizons.

Thanks.

Sorry, didn't intend to be anonymous -- that was me.

It's cool I do the same thing.

And it's the Fan Rated Rating System (http://tfrrs.tripod.com/). It's the rating system that's used over at [livejournal.com profile] csi_ny_fic.
