(no subject)

I've been rewatching my Firefly DVDs over the past few days, and I noticed something that annoyed me greatly...

We never got backstory on Shepard Book. And now that he's dead, we probably never will. He knew all that stuff about fighting/space stuff/gangsters, and no matter how many movies they make after this, we're probably going to never know. Unless that was revealed somewhere and I never saw it?

Also -- poll!

I know Joss did it on purpose, but it drives me nuts too. Though if he put out a comic book that went into Book's backstory (since that seems to be the only medium in which the stories are continuing) I'd be very happy with him.

I was rewatching "Objects in Space" to see if I could get good quotes for my paper, and Early looks at his body and goes "He's no shepard." And I'm like -- gonna say why you've come to this particular conclusion?

And there are comic books?

Yeah. There's one comic book miniseries out that takes place between "Objects In Space" and the movie (Serenity: Those Left Behind) and another which has to do with a job going right (Serenity: Better Days).

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh -- I'll have to look into that and see what I can find.

[identity profile] afteriwake.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
The first one's already been collected into a trade paperback, but the second one is still ongoing: the last part comes out next week.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'll go online and see if I can find it. Those would be nice to have.

[identity profile] afteriwake.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely. I think I'm going to go out and buy the comics for this latest miniseries since they're supposedly only $2.99 each. The TPB for the first one is probably $14.99 or $19.99, so that'll have to wait.

Whole other topic: you know the tagging thing you were doing witht he fics? Between us, who's supposed to be writing one? Because I could have sworn you gave me a prompt to write and I lost it.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, not you -- it's my turn, and I haven't written the fic yet. So I don't think you have any prompts out there from me, other than the ones I just commented on the post with.

[identity profile] afteriwake.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
That silver prompt may be the first one written up because an idea hit when I read it. Out of curiosity, what prompt did I give you?

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Danny/Other - bad idea.

Which is probably going to wind up being Danny/Bela. Just so you know.

[identity profile] afteriwake.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Hee. Can't wait, then.

[identity profile] captain-elessar.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you know.. as a fiction writer, I kind of like that. I don't know, maybe I'm weird like that. But when I write, I don't always give entire backstories, or I don't always complete everything, because when you do, you force the audience to think one way, and if you don't, then the audience can draw their own conclusions. We all probably have our own opinion about what Book was in his former life. I wouldn't be surprised if this is what Joss wanted, it's very common in modern fictions. Though I do agree that it can be annoying because you don't know the creator's take on it... so there's no definite solution.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. Because in some respects, I get what you're saying, and there are some characters that I feel the same way about, but when it comes to Book -- I feel like they were pointing him in a really specific direction. And I really want to know what, if they hadn't been cancelled, that direction was.

Like, the initial hints that they gave us that Book wasn't exactly a squeaky clean shepard mostly could have been chocked up to curiosity. He was interested in these kinds of things so he followed him. But when they encountered Early in "Objects in Space," an outside character was making a direct comment on the fact that Book knew more than a shepard logically should, and hinted at the fact that he knew why. Which makes me think that Joss had some kind of plan for him, and I want to know why too.

The feeling that I got, especially after Serenity -- or even because of it -- was that Book had been an Operative, like the antagonist in the film. He seemed to know an awful lot about them, and things he said/did during the TV series kind of supports that theory. Why would a Shepard know how to take down men with guns? How does he know how to use one?

It kind of irked me that in one episode, I forget which one, he told Mal that he would tell him someday about his past, and then in the movie, Book was all "JUST KIDDING LOLZ!"

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Book as an Operative sounds interesting. And feasible. I just hate speculating about stuff like this. I'd rather just no if I'm right or not, ya know?

[identity profile] qa.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that bugged the crap out of me too. I wanna know about Book!!

[identity profile] qa.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I know!

[identity profile] strangevisitor7.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure why or where the idea came from but i was always under the impression that Book was an Operative as well. And just like the antagonist in the movie he became disillusioned and withdrew from the world.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I guess that never really clicked for me. I'll have to go back and watch things again.

That would explain why he was so curious about why the Alliance wanted River though -- because it was familiar territory for him.

You know, I would like to know why a show that lasted seven seasons gets an eighth season in comic book form, yet Firefly-- with half of a first season-- only got one episode in comic book form.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea. And I never even really saw what the big deal was with Buffy. But then again, vampires weren't really my thing when it was on the air, and they didn't have enough pretty boys.

[identity profile] bohemu.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I love vampires, so Buffy was kind of the last thing I wanted to watch. And then it got so popular at school and I despised it for that. I don't really "get" it now either.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Not many of my friends were into Buffy, actually. A few were, but I think we were a bit young for their demographic.
