Maybe I have been here before,
I know this room; I have walked this floor,
I used to live alone before I knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch,
Love is not a victory march.
It's a cold and its a broken Hallelujah
A tall red-haired man walked into the precinct, pulling the sunglasses off his face, and studying the faces of the various people standing in the bullpen, looking for the one he was looking for. He looked around while before his eyes settled on a blond uniform sitting at her desk. He made his way to her slowly, and she looked up at him with a bright smile.
“Can I help you?”
“My name—is Lieutenant Horatio Caine,” he began, looking the woman over slowly. “And I—am looking for a Calleigh Duquesne. Do you know where I might find her?”
“I’m Calleigh Duquesne,” she replied with a nod. “What can I do for you?”
“Miss Duquesne, I—am here to offer you a job.”
“A job?” she frowned.
“I’ve heard that you are one of the best ballistics experts in the area.”
“Well, that’s what they say—can’t say for myself whether or not it’s true.”
“I was wondering if you—would like to take the position as head of the ballistics lab in Miami Dade.”
Calleigh blinked slightly, a bit blown over by the offer. “I’ll—I’ll consider it.”
“In that case, here’s what I want you to do. I want you to think this over, and when you’ve made a decision—” He extended his card to her and waited until she took it. “—you give me a call.”
“I will,” Calleigh nodded, watching carefully as Horatio made his way back out of the precinct again.

The yard in front of Calleigh’s place was a mess of boxes and bags, all getting ready to be loaded into a large pick-up. She wasn’t expected to start work in Miami for a few days, but she wanted to go down early and get herself settled in to her new place. Larry, the old guard from the precinct was giving her a hand.
“You sure you wanna do this, Calleigh?” Larry asked as he helped her load up her car. “Just pickin’ up and moving to Miami?”
“I need a change of scenery, Larry,” she sighed. “And it’s a good job.”
“I know,” he nodded. “But just pickin’ up like this. It’s gotta be hard.”
“Gonna be harder on other people more than me, I have a feeling,” Calleigh sighed.
“Oh?” he said, turning to face her, giving her an easy smile. “I hope you’re including me. Because I’m gonna face a whole lotta heartache with you gone, Miss Calleigh.”
She smiled back at him. “Of course I mean you, Larry. And a few other friends.”
He nodded. “Aside from the heartache I’m feelin’—I really do wish you well, Call.”
“I appreciate that, Larry,” she nodded, moving to give the older man a hug. “I really do.”

Dean arrived at Calleigh’s late one night a few weeks later. He kept getting a message that her phone had been disconnected, and he needed her help. Or John did, anyway, and he didn’t want to go and ask her for it himself. He and Calleigh were still awkward around each other, and she and Dean seemed to get along a lot better. He started to make his way towards the door from the Impala, and was surprised to see a “For Sale” sign in the yard. He frowned slightly, and seeing no lights on in the house, he carefully picked the lock and made his way inside.
The house was empty. Completely empty. All the furniture was covered in plastic and the house looked very not lived in. He glanced around anxiously for a minute, before pulling out his phone and dialing the precinct. It was a few rings before someone picked up.
“New Orleans Police Department.”
“Hi—I’m looking for Officer Calleigh Duquesne.”
“Officer Duquesne isn’t a member of the NOPD anymore. She transferred to the MDPD.”
“MDPD?” he frowned.
“Miami Dade—Florida.”
“Oh—thank you.”
“Have a good day, sir.”
Dean hung up before heading out to his car. It didn’t take him long to get to Miami—the highways were pretty empty at this time of night and by the time he got there, it was almost early morning. He spent the entire drive trying to figure out why Calleigh felt the need to pick up and move like she did and not tell anyone. He knew that she wanted out of the business, but he didn’t think she would go this far. He thought he would at least be able to keep in contact with her, use her as a reference.
He waited outside in his car, until he saw a flash of blond heading towards the lab. He watched her go, ready to work and do something good and productive. He knew what his dad had told him to do, to go and find her, and get the answers they needed, but he couldn’t do that to her. He just doesn’t see the point any more.
He waited until she disappeared inside, before turning onto the ignition, roaring on to the highway. Now was the time to say goodbye.
