“Never pray for justice, because you might get some.” - Margaret Atwood

“Well, what do you want me to say?” Angell asked, leaning back in her seat. He leaned back in his own seat and shrugged, letting his fingers curl around the small cup of Irish coffee in front of him. He had it on pretty good authority that Angell’s cup was lacking the distinct kick that gave Irish coffee it’s name. But he wasn’t really sure that mattered at this point. She was there to get him good and drunk, and he appreciated that fact, and was glad that at least one of them was sober enough to make sure they both got home.

He wasn’t sure he wanted her to say anything. He wasn’t sure if there was really anything to say. He did what he was supposed to do. He wasn’t sure if it was the right thing yet, but he did what he was supposed to do. He did things by the book, just like he always did. Like it was expected of him. He didn’t have Danny’s particular crutch to lean on—he wasn’t the emotional one, and he didn’t feel responsible for Rikki Sandoval losing her child. People were used to outbursts like this from Danny. They always figure things’ll blow over. He’ll pull it together and move on. Flack? Flack was supposed to be the level headed one. Flack was the one who would pull Danny back when he’d gone to far, and make sure Danny didn’t hang himself for something that was out of his hands to begin with.

“You did things by the book,” Angell said with a shrug. “What happened is terrible, but there’s nothing you, or Messer for that matter could really do about it.”

“I could have not sent her to central booking.”

“Flack, swear to God, don’t make me smack some sense into you.”

“He was right to some extent.”

“Yeah, maybe he was. Maybe he wasn’t.”

“This woman doesn’t need any more grief.”

“She made a choice, Flack,” she said, giving him a look as she leaned forward on that table. “She could have just sat down, had a cup of coffee like she told Danny she would, but she didn’t. She took his gun, and went and almost killed someone.”

“She’d just lost her kid, Angell,” he said, giving her a look. “She wasn’t thinkin’ straight.”

“Then she can plead it out, get community service. No harm, no foul.” She gave him an uneasy look, tilting her head to the side slightly as she did. “Is this why you asked me here? So I could be the badge for you?”

Flack looked up at her, holding her gaze for a minute, before looking away and shrugging. “I had to be it for Messer all day. Needed at least five minutes to let myself feel like a human being.”

“Look, Flack—I feel for her. I do. But she had to know she was asking for trouble when she pulled the gun out of that holster.”

He was quiet for a moment, taking a long sip of his coffee before speaking again. “The kid really was a piece of scum,” Flack growled, baring his teeth slightly as the whiskey burned down his throat. “He had to see the woman was falling apart at the seams, and he kept digging into her like he was—if Messer hadn’t got to him first, I probably would have clocked the bastard.”

“No, you wouldn’t’ve,” Angell shook her head, a slight smirk crossing her face. “You might have given the guy a piece or two of your mind, but you wouldn’t have hit the kid. You wouldn’t have been able to live with yourself if you did, and then he walked because of it.”

“Yeah, well—you’re not so worried about the badge with you got a mother who just lost her kid cryin’ right in front of you.”

“Still wouldn’t’ve done it,” Angell shook her head. “I trained under you, Flack. You’re too by the book. You care about the badge too much.”

“There are days I wish I didn’t,” he admitted softly.

“You softie,” she teased, and he raised an eyebrow at her. She gave him a grin, before shaking her head. “Stop worrying about other people, Flack. It’s only gonna get you in trouble.”

He smirked half-heartedly. “You say that now, but when it’s time for me to go in and save your ass—”

“My ass does just fine without your saving, thank you,” she said as she smirked back. She was quiet for a minute, before her face sobered and she took a sip of her own coffee. “Do you think Danny’s gonna be alright?”

Flack ran a hand over his face before responding. “God only knows. Things turn out alright with Rikki; he’ll have a new cause by the end of the week.”

“He needs for someone to stitch up that bleeding heart,” she sighed, leaning back in the booth.

“Yeah,” Flack muttered, leaning back in his own seat as he took another sip of his coffee. “Something like that.”

I liked this. Haven't seen the ep yet (probably won't until tomorrow), but I liked it even though I didn't know exactly what it was about. I especially loved the end bit.

That was great. Not enough Flack/Angell around. I've read all yours and always enjoy them.

You should write more. ;)

I quite enjoyed this.
Nice conversation between the two, and a lovely extension of the episode. I felt that if we saw the convo, it would've gone down like this.
And, yay, Flack/Angell. Nice to see the two getting some lovin'.
Great job.

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. I have a lot of fun writing the two of them together.
