Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Calleigh didn’t have to know Ruby was a demon to peg her as trouble. She could see it the minute the Winchester boys led Ruby right to her. It was obvious that the only one who trusted her out of the two of them was Sam, and if Dean didn’t trust her, there most certainly had to be something wrong with her. She didn’t know what it was, exactly, and she didn’t ask, but she did not feel comfortable with the fact that Ruby knew who she was. Thankfully, though, the young blond didn’t know where she lived, and Calleigh wanted it to stay that way. That was the only reason she told Dean that they couldn’t stay with her tonight. She didn’t trust having that girl under her roof.
Dean seemed like he understood. He was upset, but he understood. He didn’t like having her there any more than she did. But for some reason, Sam wanted her there, and claimed that she could help Dean, and Sam had reached the point where he was desperate enough to take the bait dangled in front of him. But there was something about Sam that Calleigh didn’t recognize. There had been something different about him, ever since the gate had been opened. It was this nagging feeling in the pit of her stomach that she couldn’t quite place, but her gut was telling her that something was wrong. Something was very wrong with this situation, and frankly it had her worried, for more Dean’s sake than anything else. He didn’t have a lot of time left, and Sam was wasting his time banking on the word of this demon, who they didn’t know if they could trust. Say one thing and do another. That seemed to be the way things usually worked. And she was not in the mood, nor was she in the right place, for some demon to be yanking the strings.
Even though she knew that Ruby didn’t know where she lived, it didn’t stop her from taking the necessary precautions. A few well-worn incantations and she was sitting in her living room alone, confident that nothing demonic was going to be making it through her front door. She waited a minute, soaking in the silence, before picking up the phone and dialing an old number.
“Yeah?”
“Bobby, it’s Calleigh.”
“Got something you need help takin’ care of?”
“More like a question,” she replied, thinking for a minute. “Know anything about this Ruby girl the boys have got tailing them?”
“They brought her down your way? I swear, I’m gonna beat the crap out of ‘em one of these days. They don’t think.”
“Who is she?”
“She’s a demon, Calleigh,” Bobby replied. “A really shifty demon, who’s really hard to pin down.”
“How do you mean?”
“She’s got Sam convinced she’s on their side, that she’s going to save Dean. She even helped me rebuild the Colt.”
“The demon killing Colt?” Calleigh asked, her tone slightly disbelieving. “She helped you rebuild that?”
“That she did.”
“So why the hell didn’t you shoot her?”
“I’m not quite sure myself.”
Calleigh smirked. “If the Colt’s fixed, does this mean I can?”
“If you can get it away from Sam, sure.” There was a pause on the other end of the line, before Bobby spoke up again. “You never used to be so trigger happy before.”
“Well, we are at war,” Calleigh replied, getting up when she heard the gravel of her driveway crunching, and making her way to the window. “What you used to do always changes.” She watched as the car door slammed, and frowned slightly before turning back to the phone. “I gotta go, Bobby. Can I give you a call later?”
“Please do. Keep me posted on what you know.”
“I will.”
“Be careful, Calleigh.”
She hung up and made her way to the front door, opening it before the man even got there. He stared up at her for a minute, before setting his jaw slightly, just staring back at her. There was something in that gaze that told her things were spinning out of control way more than they should have, and she didn’t know what she was supposed to do to fix it. She pulled away slightly, holding the door open more so he could walk inside. Once he was in, she shut the door behind them, leaning back against it and turning to look at him.
“What’s going on, Dean?”
Dean didn’t respond at first, instead moving over to one of the tables by the door, and playing with the things sitting there. She waited patiently for a minute, and eventually he looked up at her, in a way that almost broke her heart.
“Yellow Eyes said somethin’ to me,” he said slowly, looking down at his hands again and away from her. “Before I shot him. He asked me if I knew that if the Sam I brought back was still the same Sam. At first I thought he was just yanking my chain, but now—”
“Now you’re not so sure.”
He turned and looked her in the eye, studying her face and looking for something, she wasn’t sure what. “Bobby told me he was lying too. But Bobby is a really shitty liar.”
“I’d trust what Bobby says, Dean,” Calleigh said slowly, pushing off the door and moving into the living room, breaking his gaze. “I’d trust his gut before I’d trust my own.”
“And now you’re lying to me.”
“I’m not lying to you.”
“Then look me in the eye, and tell me that what Bobby said was the truth.” Calleigh froze, but she didn’t turn, crossing her arms in front of her chest and trying to think of exactly what to say. “Calleigh—” She could hear the anger growing in his voice and she took a deep breath before closing her eyes and turning to face him.
“Bringing people back from the dead is a crapshoot, Dean,” she said, giving him a look. “Even for a demon as powerful as the Crossroads Demon.”
“They brought me back, and I’m not any different.”
“You technically weren’t dead yet,” Calleigh explained. “Your heart was still beating and you were still breathing.”
“But with Sam—”
“The longer someone is actually physically dead, the more they become—altered,” she ran a hand through her hair. “Or at least that’s the rumor.”
“That’s just a theory?” Dean said, his eyes starting to get hopeful. She didn’t understand what he was getting hopeful about—Sam was still different. She figured it must have made him feel better to know that this change might not have been his own fault..
She nodded, before rubbing the back of her neck. “There’s another rumor going around as well.”
“And what’s that?” he asked, crossing his arms in front of his chest.
She looked up at him, and said slowly, “That Sam’s the—”
“He’s not.”
“Dean—”
“Sam is not the damn Anti-Christ. He’s not the fuckin’ Adversary.”
“Dean, would you listen—”
“How can you, of all people, fuckin’ buy into that?” Dean said, giving her a look. “How can you say that about him?”
“You said it yourself,” she replied, probably a little more forcefully than she should have. “You said that he’s different. Yellow Eyes chose him for a reason, to do something with an army of demons, and now he’s getting buddy-buddy with one? Something’s not right about this.”
“But you said—it could have been the bringing him back that did it.” Dean was grasping at straws now, desperate for there to be some other answer. He would rather take the burden of the change in his brother on himself than have there be any other explanation.
Calleigh closed her eyes, and said softly. “I’m just calling ‘em like I see them.”
“I—I need to—” He backed away from her, starting to head towards the door.
“Dean—” she began, starting to reach for his arm, but he shrugged her off, continuing his way out the door. “Dean, wait!”
“I can’t,” he replied simply, slamming the door shut behind him. There was a few minutes before she heard the roar of the Impala starting up, and she moved back to the phone again, quickly dialing a number and placing the phone to her ear.
“Yeah?”
“Bobby, we’ve got a problem—”

You're not going to leave it like that, right?
As soon as I figure out more about the whole Ruby/Sam situation -- who I don't trust, but still think is a really interesting character -- I think I'll write more of this. I'm not really sure where exactly to take it though.
I definitely agree on the fact that Dean's so conflicted with that same question I've been asking myself all summer.
I really want to know what exactly changed in Sam, or even if it really happened. This is such an interesting twist for the show (and a great way for Jared to stretch his acting chops) and I can't wait to see where it goes.
I'm surprised with Sam's actions regarding her, but at the same time, it all goes back to "I'm your greatest weakness, Sam!" or something similar.
I think Sam isn't that desperate where he'll accept a demon's help to save his brother yet. But he keeps giving her more and more leeway, which is really interesting to see.
