She knew she shouldn’t be thinking the way she was.
She knew Danny’s reputation from the minute she had stepped into the door of the bullpen that first day, but he wouldn’t have that reputation, she realized now, if he had no effect on women whatsoever. Fact of the matter was, no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t keep back the ideas that crept into her mind whenever he was in the room next to her, couldn’t keep back that daydreams of things she wanted to do to him, couldn’t keep back the fight back the warring need to either smack him senseless or shove him against the wall and kiss him, and that was on a normal day.
On the days he really pissed her off, like a day such as this one for example, he would make a smartass comment about how she was hot when she was pissed, which would only piss her off more, and he knew it. And especially right now, she knew that if she didn’t leave the room, she was going to hurt him in a way that might result in losing her job, and possibly her freedom for a little while. Because she knew that attempted murder, even if it was Danny Messer, possibly the most infuriating man on the planet, was still a crime in the state of New York.
So she left. She stormed out, out of the interrogation room, out of the building out into the cold and snow, and it didn’t matter that she was in a shirt that wouldn’t have protected her from a cool fall breeze, let alone the artic blast of the winter winds, and she felt the cooling effect it was having on her already, slowly chilling the anger until she noticed the fact that it was indeed snowing.
And once all thoughts of Danny Messer were erased from her mind, a grin crossed her face. She couldn’t help it. There was something about standing around in the snow that made her feel like a little girl who had just found out school was cancelled and she was allowed to run around in the snow all day.
She started spinning around, and kicking the clumps of snow that had collected around her, before throwing back her head and collecting the little bits of frozen water on her tongue. Screw the fact that water that was frozen and falling was from the city itself, and probably, knowing her luck, carried more diseases than infected meat. She was reliving her childhood here.
And that was the sight that greeted Danny when he finally figured out where she had gone, and pulled open the door that led to the crimelab roof, ready to tell her off for not finishing the argument properly. Instead he was left in stunned amusement, watchng Detective Jessica Angell as she danced through the snow collecting on the roof as though she was eight years old and without a care in the world.
It amused him to no end, the way she just danced around, snowflakes catching in her curly hair as she went, giggling like a kid on Christmas. It made him smile. Not the flirtatious smirk that usually came to mind when he thought of her, but a genuine smile, wishing he could just slip back into a time when life was that easy and that simple as easily as she could. Too much shit had happened to him on the way, and all of that backlog of emotions was like a firewall to get through to try and find the way things used to be, and he was somewhat jealous.
But then again, this was a side he rarely ever got to see of Angell. Usually it was just the badass who was just trying to prove that she could do her job, and he kept picking on her for it. Generally, he knew when he was being a first class ass, and he knew he was doing it to her most of the time, but she interested him. In a way that Maka hadn’t. Maka had a comeback for everything he said. Their banter was legendary. Him and Angell had something similar, but he wasn’t sure it was quite the same thing. Maka was like the major leagues while he was still playing t-ball. Not saying that Angell was any less of a woman than Maka was. She was just a little more open to playing outside her league.
He thought.
He really had no idea, and the way that she was blowing up at him earlier, he was pretty sure he had screwed his chances there, but he was going to take a second to enjoy seeing this younger, more child-like side of Angell come out, and enjoy the day in the snow.
Then he also realized that it was almost twenty degrees outside, and no matter how adorable it was, she was going to freeze to death if he didn’t do something.
“Hey! Angell!” he said, moving over to her and shrugging his jacket off his shoulders. She looked up at him, startled, as though she had been in another world at the time.
“Ya trying to freeze out here?” he asked, and she blushed as he wrapped the jacket around her shoulders. Or at least, he thought she blushed. It was hard to tell with the flush on her cheeks from the winter wind. She felt the warmth of the jacket envelope her, and she gave Danny a shy smile.
“Guess I wasn’t thinking,” she shivered, suddenly realizing how cold it really was, and feeling her teeth start to chatter.
“C’mon,” he nodded his head towards the door, “Let’s go inside.” She turned and walked with him, as the snow swirled around them, she looked up at him again.
“I’m sorry about some of the things I said earlier. They were pretty bitchy.”
He shrugged, “Don’t worry about it. I deserved it. I was being an ass.”
“But still—”
“Just let it go, Angell,” he said with a smirk, “You know we’re just going to be doing the same thing tomorrow.”
“If that’s the case, maybe I should just kick your ass now and get it over with,” she snapped back as they entered the doorway back into the building. He turned to look at her, the flakes of snow standing out against her dark hair, and the dark material of the jacket around her, and, on impulse, he leaned in and kissed her, on hand cupping the back of her head, the other resting on her hip.
She didn’t respond at first, out of shock, but she slowly relaxed into her responding, and she leaned into the kiss, and he felt her fingers against his sides, pulling his body in closer to her, until they finally broke the kiss, and she looked up at him in confusion.
“What was that for?”
“Just wanted to do that before we ruined the moment and started arguing with each other again,” he whispered, before pulling away from her, and started walking down the stairs. As she watched his retreating back, she was suddenly very aware of two things. One, was how Danny had earned the reputation of ‘ladykiller.’ Secondly:
You are so screwed.
