The bus pulled up to the terminal in Avon, Colorado, just as it was starting to snow. True, that was going to make getting home a bit harder, but hey—she was all for a white Christmas. They were always prettier in Colorado. It took longer for the snow to get dirty, and brown, and it spent a lot longer being white and pretty. That, and she and Jenny took on the twins in a snowball match whenever it snowed. And the twins were going down this year if she had anything to say about it. Walking down back roads to get home through the snow and wet was going to be more difficult, though, and she wasn’t exactly looking forward to it, no matter how much she may have liked the snow.

She hung out in the waiting area for a bit, bundling up and checking if she had enough money to maybe call a cab, but she had had a few unexpected expenses and last minute Christmas presents to pick up on the ride home, and what she had wasn’t going to cover a cab, Christmas or not. She only took that as a sign to bundle up more, and started to make her way out of the terminal as she pulled her hat down over her ears and made her way out into the snow.

Apparently luck was on her side, though, because it wasn’t long before a honking horn pulled up alongside her. “Hey Anna!” a middle-aged, dark haired man called out to her from the window, and she turned to him with a smile.

“Hey, Mr. Peterson.”

“Heading back home?”

“That’s the plan.”

She watched him as he pushed some things out of the way, before pushing open the door itself. “Hop in.”

“Really?” she said, surprised. She had know Mr. Peterson since she had moved in with Mama when she was fourteen, but he had never been this outwardly nice to her, so it was catching her a bit off guard.

“Yeah, I’m heading up that way anyway. Consider it a Christmas gift.”

“Awesome,” she grinned as she made her way over to the car and climbing inside shutting the door behind her. She glanced over her shoulder to the bags and boxes sitting in the backseat, and turned back to him with a smirk. “Last minute Christmas shopping?”

“You really have no idea—”

They chatted animatedly for the short drive up to the boarding house, talking about where Anna had gone since the last time he saw her, and she asked about his kids and how they were doing, and before she knew it, she was climbing out into the snow that had covered the driveway of the boarding house. She shut the door and waved him off, before making her way over the driveway. It was a few minutes before she was jogging up the porch steps and pulling the porch door open, stepping inside and shaking off the snow. She dropped her bag by the door, and pulled off her hat, shouting back into the house.

“Anyone home?”

There was a thunder of feet down the stairs, and two bodies charged at her, one blond and one dark-haired. Nate got to her first, wrapping his arms around her waist and spinning her around, and Luke was right behind him, ready to repeat the gesture, and Anna couldn’t help but laugh and hug both of them tightly, finally feeling like she was right at home.
