“You are capable of control, Anna,” Seth sighed. “It’s just a matter of having a little focus.”
“Easy for you to say,” the seventeen year-old snorted. “Look, I just shorted out the toaster, alright? I didn’t kill anyone.”
“You could have,” Seth pointed out. “And if I remember correctly, you almost have before.”
“Yeah—thanks for reminding me,” she glared, crossing her arms in front of her chest. Those were memories she didn’t want to be reliving—or not reliving, as the case may be. “What do you expect me to do?”
“Recognize the signs. Know when you’re going to lash out and try to get a handle on it.” He peered at her from across the table. “Think you can handle that?”
“I’m not an idiot,” she said, giving him a look.
“Well, then?” Seth replied, returning it.
“Well then what?”
“What’re your—symptoms?”
“My symptoms?” She raised an eyebrow at him, and he rolled his eyes.
“You know what I mean,” he growled. She sat sullenly for a minute, slumping down in her seat more.
“Usually happens when I’m frustrated or scared,” she said quietly. “Starts with a headache, and then it feels like my skin is crawling. If I get scared enough, I black out.”
“So you need to recognize that and calm yourself down before something happens.”
“What if I can’t calm myself down?” she said, giving him a look. “What if I don’t want to calm myself down?”
“You do it anyway,” Seth replied. “You can’t get emotional like a normal person.”
“So—what? I’m not allowed to be normal? I have be some kind of freak.”
“If that’s what you want to call it, fine, but you have to be responsible for yourself, Anna. You say you don’t want to hurt anyone—take responsibility and get control.”
“Don’t tell me about responsibility,” she spouted without even thinking. “I didn’t ask for this!”
“You think I did?” he growled, slamming his hands down on the table. “You think I asked to have a werewolf bite me when I was thirteen? Fuck no. But I owned up to it, and I got control.” Anna fell silent across the table. She had forgotten who she was talking to, and she just looked down at her hands, not having anything to say in response. “Most of us never ask for what happens to us,” Seth said quietly as he started to clear his plates from the table. “Step up, and get control.”
She waited until his back was turned at the sink, before whispering softly so that he couldn’t here. “What if it’s not mine to get?”
