Fandom: Heroes
Title: Long Road Home
Author: [livejournal.com profile] iluvroadrunner6
Rating: FRT
Characters: Claire and Noah Bennet, mentions of the Petrellis
Content Warning: Spoilers through Season 1, and for "Four Months Ago"
Summary: Claire and Noah on the long ride back to Odessa.
Author's Note: Written for [livejournal.com profile] propernice, who had given me the prompt of Noah and Claire having a conversation post-S1 finale. I'd really love some feedback on this, because I've never written HRG before, and I'm not sure how I did.
Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Heroes. They're owned by NBC. However, any and all original characters are mine, so please do not use them without my permission.

They left New York before the sun rose the next morning. At Claire’s request, Noah stopped by the hospital and let her see how Nathan was doing, but after that they hit the road, pulling onto the nearest interstate highway, and heading back to Odessa. The car ride was a relatively silent. Neither of them had very much to say to each other—rather, they had so much they wanted to say, with no real way to try and express it. For Claire, not being able to talk to her father seemed to hurt more than anything she’d been through—even more than losing Peter and Nathan before she even had a chance to know them.

It was silence all the way from New York to Nashville, where they finally stopped for the night. Noah paid for the motel room in cash so it couldn’t be traced, and the two of them walked to the nearest fast food joint, giving them a chance to stretch their legs after being in a car all day. They still wouldn’t talk to each other, though, walking in silence on the dark side of the highway. It wasn’t until they had gotten their food and settled into their seats that Noah finally spoke up, putting his burger down before he even took a bite.

“The company is going to be looking for us in Odessa,” he said slowly. “We’re going to have to move.” Claire nodded slowly, barely picking at her food. Noah watched his daughter carefully, speaking up again in concern. “You’ve barely eaten anything all day, Claire.”

“I’m just—not hungry,” Claire said slowly. “Fast food on the side of the highway isn’t exactly the most appetizing, Dad.” She gave him a look, almost as though trying to cover the fact that she was upset, and Noah smirked slightly, leaning forward on the table before replying.

“I know it’s not as elegant as something Angela Petrelli’s personal chef would make, but I’m working with what I’ve got here.” Claire looked up at him with a sad smile, and he sighed, looking back down at his food. “I know you miss them, Claire.”

“I didn’t get a chance to know them well enough to miss them.”

“I know Peter is gone. But you still have a chance with Nathan—” He hesitated slightly at the mention of her biological father, and then finished again. “—if you wanted to, when he gets better.”

If he gets better. And how will I get in touch with him if we’re going to be hiding from the company?”

“There’s this newfangled invention called the telephone. You used it quite a bit back in Odessa.”

“You don’t think the company will bug his phones or something?”

“I doubt Angela Petrelli will be letting them anywhere near her phones.”

Claire smiled slightly. “She offered to take me to Paris, you know.”

“And you didn’t go?”

She shrugged. “Not really my style.”

Noah smiled. “I know this is going to be hard, Claire, but it won’t be for long. We’ll be out of this before you know it.”

“I know,” she said with a slow nod, starting to pick at the French fries in front of her.

“I’m only doing this because I love you, ClaireBear.”

She got up and walked around to his side of the table, sliding her arms around his neck and pulling him close. “I know, Dad. I love you too.”

I think you did a really good job with this. Your HRG is very reminiscent of how he's portrayed on the show.

He makes me nervous. He's such a distinct character, and I don't want to screw up his voice.

I'm glad you liked it.

Oh I loved this. I could actually hear it in my head and see it happening - especially after what's happened this season. I approve 100%!

Hee -- I'm glad you approve. I really was worried that I got HRG's voice down, but if it worked for you, yay!
