Danny/Maka - Bruno

dude, i know there's going to be fic popping up everywhere now about danny and that dog, but i had to. you just can't not write fic about danny and a dog.

Fandom: CSI:NY
Title: Bruno
Author: [livejournal.com profile] iluvroadrunner6
Rating: FRT
Pairing: Danny Messer/Kaile Maka
[livejournal.com profile] 25_foods Prompt: 010. Caramel
Content Warning: N/A
Summary: How Danny got his dog. (Because we all know that dog was really his.)
Author's Note: Also used the prompt Danny Messer / Kaile Maka / kinda cute. Written for that adorable dog that was in last night's episode. And I chose Maka because Lilly and Lindsay would both get down on the ground to play with the dog, and that wasn't what I wanted. So Maka it was.
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters of CSI:NY. They're owned by CBS.

Kaile walked through the door of the apartment, and was met with a smell she wasn’t familiar with. Well, no—she was familiar with it. She just wasn’t familiar with it coming from her apartment. She heard Danny’s voice coming from the living room, talking to someone, and since there was no voice coming back at him, it was safe to assume it wasn’t a person.

“Danny, please tell me we don’t have a dog,” she said, pinching her eyes closed as she waited for a response.

“—We don’t have a dog?” he said, the tone of his voice telling her that he knew he was in trouble.

Danny,” she groaned following his voice into the living room. He was sitting on the floor, playing with a small, caramel-colored dog. The small animal noticed when she came into the room, gave a little yelp, and ran over to say hello. “No! No,” she tried to say as firmly as possible, “Go back to Danny.” She pointed over to the other man, and the dog ran back to Danny’s lap, and the man greeted him with a grin and a hearty scratch behind the ears.

“What’s wrong, Kaile?” he said, looking up from the animal to his girlfriend, “I thought you liked dogs?”

“Yes. When they’re not mine,” she nodded, before collapsing on the couch behind them, “Where did you find him, anyway?”

“He followed me home,” Danny replied, getting up and sitting down next to her.

“Didn’t your mother ever teach you that when a dog does that, you tell him to go home?” she sighed, “And you don’t let them in the house?”

“My ma had a soft spot for mangy mutts,” he replied, wrapping his arm around her, “Look, he has tags, I called the owner and left a message. Can he just stay here until the owner comes to get him?”

The dog, almost as if he knew he was being talked about, hopped up onto the couch stepped over Danny’s lap, and curled up in the spot between the two humans. Kaile looked down at him with a smile, and scratched him gently behind the ears.

“He is kinda cute,” she whispered, and Danny gave her a kiss on the forehead.

“Thank you,” he murmured.

“Kinda looks like you,” she said, glancing up at him.

“Really?” Danny frowned, looking down at the dog, as the phone rang. Kaile got up to get it, while Danny picked the dog up and looked him in the face.

“Hello?” she asked.

“Uh, hi. This is Henry Waters. Someone from this number called and said they found my dog?”

“Oh, yeah,” Kaile frowned, turning back to the man on the couch, “We have him. Whenever you’re ready to pick him up.”

“Great. I can pick him up tonight, if that’s alright?”

“Later tonight’s fine,” she sighed, “Where should we meet you?” She watched as the look on Danny’s face fell, looking down to absent mindedly scratch the dog. She finished the call and hung up, before crossing her hands in front of her chest. “We’re supposed to be outside Central Park in a half an hour.”

“OK,” he muttered dejectedly.

“You knew we were going to—”

“Would you let me have a few minutes alone with him? Please?” Kaile gave him a smile before leaning over and giving him a quick kiss, then leaving the room.

Danny was ready to hand the dog over to the man, apprehensively, but when the dog saw him he started to shake. Waters rolled his eyes before reaching forward to take the dog out of Danny’s arms. He got close enough to, but the dog barked loudly at him, causing both men to recoil.

Waters rolled his eyes, before reaching forward again. Again the dog began to bark, but this time the man didn’t step back, and the dog lunged forward and bit his hand.

“Son of a bitch!” Waters said, staring down at his hand. The dog wriggled out of Danny’s arms, hopped over his shoulder and dashed behind Kaile’s legs, who was standing a bit further back. “Damn mutt,” he growled, making his way towards the dog, shoving Danny out of the way forcibly. When Kaile didn’t move out of the way, he grabbed her arm to force her out of the way, but he suddenly found himself spun around, face into one of the stone pillars that framed the entrance to the park.

“Number one,” Kaile said, pressing his face into the plaster, “Whacha did right there? You just assaulted two NYPD detectives. Number two, you don’t get the hell outta here right now, I won’t hesitate in arresting you for animal cruelty on top of that.” She let him go, and the man pulled back, brushing himself off, shooting the two people angry looks.

“Fine, keep the damn dog,” he stated, “He was more trouble than he was worth anyway.”

As he disappeared into the streets Danny walked over to her, concern on his face. “You OK?”

“Fine, you?”

“Fine,” Danny nodded, before his face brightening, “So this mean we can keep him?”

“Yes,” Kaile sighed, rolling her eyes as Danny picked the dog up, “We can keep him. But he stays out of the bedroom.”

“But—”

“Danny, I don’t want dog hair all over my clothes before I even put them on.”

“Fine,” he said, before muttering sweet nothings to the animal in his arms.

“What’s his name, anyway?” she asked, glancing over at the collar around his neck.

“Bruno,” Danny replied.

“Bruno, huh?” she grinned at the mutt as he looked at her, scratching him gently behind the ears, “Guess you’re coming home with us, boy—yeah.”

“And you said you’re not a dog person,” he grinned, and she looked at him, before smacking him upside the head, and then going back to the dog.

I don’t think I deserved that.
