“It’s not going to kill you, Danny,” Maka said as she sat with the man behind the curtain in the hospital, waiting for the doctor to come and see them, “They just want to make sure you’re not going to die.”
“I’m fine though,” Danny whined.
“You hit the pavement pretty hard,” she sighed, “You said I had five heads.” Danny had been processing a scene when a there was a bit of a mix-up with the gurney being used to carry away the body. When they were straightening it out, the corner of the gurney caught Danny in the chin, hard, sending him flying backwards onto the pavement. At first, he was too disoriented to make logical sense, and then he kept insisting that both Lindsay and Maka had more heads than they knew they had attached to their neck.
“Well, for a second there, you did,” Danny replied, trying to defend himself, “—Alright, I was a little disoriented, but I’m fine now, so can we just go, please?”
“No,” Maka replied.
“You could just kiss it and make it all better,” he said, a flirtatious grin crossing his face.
“Or I could smack you upside the head and make it worse,” she nodded, and he started to pout.
“I don’t see why you have to stay with me. I’m thirty-one years old for Christ’s sake.”
“I wouldn’t have to if you didn’t run out on the doctor the last time you were ordered to see one,” Maka stated, clearly as annoyed with this as he was. She got up at this point and walked over to him, “Now, if you’re a good little boy, and are good for Doctor Whoever, I’m sure they’ll give you a nice lollipop when you’re done.”
“A red one?” he asked, looking up at her, and she rolled her eyes.
“Why not?” she replied.
“OK,” he mumbled before the doctor finally came into the room.
“Detective Messer, my name is Doctor Hallenstien,” he said, “Let’s check you out.” He noticed the woman standing there, and was slightly thrown, “I’m sorry, miss, but you’re going to have to wait outside in the waiting room.”
“Not a problem,” Maka replied, starting to leave when she felt Danny clamp down on her hand. She shot him a look and he let her go, a dejected look crossing his face as she walked away.

Maka looked up from the magazine she was reading as Danny and the doctor walked out into the waiting room. She gave him an look, and he resumed looking like he had just been through the most trying ordeal of his life.
“Well, Doc,” she said, getting up, “He good to go?”
“He should be fine,” the doctor replied, “I just recommend he go home to rest for the rest of the day and not go back to work till tomorrow.”
“Alright,” Maka sighed, “Thanks.” The doctor disappeared, and Maka started walking Danny towards the door.
“Like hell I’m going home,” Danny replied, “Just drop me off at the lab so I can catch up.”
“Nope,” Maka countered, “The hospital has learned how to deal with you, Danny Messer. They called Mac before they said anything to me and I have explicit orders not to let you out of my sight until you’re allowed to go back to work again.” She pat him on the shoulders, and gave him a smile, “You’re stuck with me as a baby-sitter.”
A mischievous grin crossed his face, and she shook her head, “No, not that kind of baby-sitter either.” His face fell again, then he stopped in his tracks.
“What now?” she frowned.
“I didn’t get my lollipop,” he replied, “I was good.”
Maka rolled her eyes for what felt like the millionth time that day. Danny could be such a little kid when doctors were involved. “I’ll buy you one on the way home.”
“I want a red one,” he repeated, starting to follow her again, “That’s shaped like a fire fighter hat, and has the white icing on the outline of he hat and—”
“You’re gonna get whatever damn lollipop I find,” she replied, not even slowing down so he could catch up with her. Danny stopped again, before continuing to walk.
“OK, but I still want a red one—”
