Summary: Danny is dragged to a party and unwittingly becomes a musical writer's newest muse.
Author's Note: I do not own the idea for NFL: The Musical. It was created by a brilliant friend of mine, so please do not attempt to rip off his idea. He might hurt me.
Disclaimer: I don't own Danny or Maka. They're owned by CBS. However, I do own Cara and Duncan, so please do not borrow them without my permission.

“Please, Danny,” Danny mumbled into his glass and he snatched another glass of champagne of the tray the waiter had held in front of him, “I’ll owe you big time, Danny. You’re my only hope, Danny.” He downed the glass before scowling into the wall, “You bet your ass you owe me big time.

He had been invited—although it was more liked dragged—by Maka to a party being thrown by one of the city’s most infamous Broadway producers on the eve of what, according to most of the people in the room, was going to be his most promising show ever. He and written, directed, and produced the show himself, but what Danny couldn’t and refused to understand was how this show was going to be a hit. His eye fell on a poster next to him, and as he read the title it still wasn’t making any sense.

NFL: The Musical.

The only expression that fit in Danny’s mind was ‘what the—’

“Danny!” Maka came into view, and Danny mentally steeled his jaw from dropping for the second time that night. She looked absolutely gorgeous. Not that she didn’t look gorgeous all the time, but tonight—wow.

And it wasn’t as though she was wearing this elegant, fancy dress. It was just a simple strapless black dress that came down to about her knees, but it clung in all the right places, and she was wearing a somewhat sheer half-top over it. That, combined with her slightly more girly approach to hair and make-up just made her look so much more sophisticated and made him wonder more and more what the hell he was doing here with her. He felt so out of place right now, and he didn’t know what to do to make him stick out less and blend in more.

“I want you to meet someone,” she said, dragging a man in a suit forward, “This is Duncan Isadorf. Duncan, this is my date, Danny Messer.”

Date? He was her date? She’d left that out when she was begging for him to do this.

“Mr. Messer,” Duncan replied, extending his hand, “I’ve heard quite a bit about you from Kaile.”

“Well, I hope it’s all good,” Danny grinned, before nodding to the poster, “So you’re the guy who wrote the musical?”

“I’m the guy who wrote the musical,” the other man nodded, before taking a sip from the glass in his hand, “Kaile mentioned that she had met you at work, but she didn’t say exactly what you did.”

“Well, Danny’s a CSI with the crimelab,” Maka cut in, “He does all the scientific stuff with the evidence.”

Duncan nodded, before nodding to someone over Danny’s shoulder, “There’s Cara. Make sure you pop in on her before you leave, darling.” He leaned in and gave Maka a quick kiss and whispered in her ear, “He’s gotta nice ass,” before disappearing into the crowd. Maka smirked to his back before feeling Danny grab her arm.

“I’m your date?” he hissed, giving her a look. She winced.

“Sorry,” she frowned, “I didn’t mention that?”

“Nah, kinda left that part out,” he muttered, “What the hell is going on Maka?”

She grabbed his arm and pulled him off to the side. From this angle, he could see a platinum blond girl leaning on Duncan’s arm, and Maka glared in the woman’s direction.

“That’s Cara Fabian,” she whispered in Danny’s ear, so he could hear what she was saying and no one else could, “She’s—frustrating. As are most of the people here. So you are basically here to keep me sane. Also, they were going to make assumptions about you being here whether no matter how many times I told them we weren’t together, so I just told them you were my date to make things—easier. Follow me?”

“How do you know these people?” Danny asked.

“Some from high school, some from college,” she replied, “I wouldn’t have come tonight, but I adore Duncan, and he made me promise to come.” A small smile crossed her face, “The musical is actually quite brilliant. He’s amazing.”

“So why isn’t he your date?” Danny mused, the familiar glint that he was screwing with her in his eye.

“Oh, you’re really more his type,” Maka replied with a quick grin and a pat on his shoulder. Danny shot her a look, and she laughed before dragging him through the crowd with her to another group of people who were talking.

“Cara, my dear, I believe I’ve just been inspired for my next musical, “Duncan grinned, wrapping his arm around the blond woman’s shoulders.

“Well, Duncan, I’m happy I could be your muse,” Cara replied, giving the man a smile.

“Oh, not you, darling,” Duncan replied shortly, and Cara’s face fell, “Kaile brought this date with her, and—”

“Kaile Maka brought a date?” Cara said in shock as they walked through the room.

“Not the point,” Duncan shook his head, “Stay on the topic at hand, please. Anyway, he has the most fascinating job. He’s a crime scene investigator. Apparently, that’s a real profession. Not just something they made up for television.”

“And, Duncan?” Cara frowned, not really as interested in his inspiration now that she wasn’t the cause of it.

“I just had the most brilliant idea,” Duncan held out his hand in front of them and waved out the marquee in front of her, “CSI: The Musical.”

“Duncan, I think you’ve had a bit too much champagne,” Cara sighed, taking a sip from her own glass.

“That’s what you said when I told you about NFL: The Musical,” Duncan grinned, before taking a sip of his own, “This one’s going to be a smash.”

“Kaile!” Cara’s voice came from behind her and Maka winced, so only Danny could see.

“Cara!” she said, plastering on the most realistic looking fake smile she could, “How’ve you been?”

“Fine, babe, how bout you?” Cara grinned.

“Fine,” Maka nodded. Cara noticed Danny standing behind the Asian woman, and gave him a smile.

“This must be Duncan’s newest muse,” she said, extending her hand to the man, “Cara Fabian.”

“Danny Messer,” he replied, shaking her hand, but giving her a confused look, “But I’m sorry—Duncan’s newest what?”

“Oh, I take it he hasn’t told you two his latest idea,” Cara said a smirk playing on her lips, “CSI: The Musical. Apparently, hearing about your job inspired him. And probably other—assests—as well.”

Danny nodded, slowly before signaling to the waiter who was walking by, “I don’t think I’ve had quite enough champagne to have heard that.”

“I think Duncan’s had too much,” Cara replied, taking the opportunity to squeeze between him and Maka, “You know, Danny—can I call you Danny?—having a job as a crime scene investigator must be quite fascinating, you really get to see all aspects of the human element, don’t you?” Danny suddenly felt uncomfortable, and stepped back towards Kaile, wrapping an arm around her waist.

“Yeah, you do,” he replied, hoping Cara was getting the message he was trying to send, “Although we do get some pretty interesting manners of death every once in a while. A colleague of mine worked a case where the man was killed by a chunk of frozen waste had fallen from a plane, and bashed a guy’s skull open, and then melted so she had no murder weapon, just had to go on the chemicals and trace left behind.”

“Fascinating,” Cara replied dryly, before excusing herself to go talk to someone entirely more interesting.

“Thank you,” Maka whispered in his ear before giving him a smile. Their position had her arm resting against his chest and his arm around her waist.

“You are my date,” he replied, “And she’s kind of scary.” She laughed softly before reaching up and giving him a quick chaste kiss on the lips.

“Really, Danny,” she sighed, “Thanks for doing this.” She walked away and he was frozen in place, unable to really think straight.
