“So—” Aiden began as she and Danny sat down to dinner at a diner that no one they knew frequented. Aiden’s sudden dismissal from the crimelab, and the reasons for it, hadn’t gone over well with the rest of the lab, and the team usually agreed to meet her in out-of-the-way places, just to avoid getting hassled by the other cops. It wasn’t that they wouldn’t step up to defend her, they just got tired of having to every time they walked into a cop bar, or the diner near the precinct, or anywhere else cops happened to frequent.

“So?” Danny said, giving her a look as he waited for her to finish her sentence.

“Who’s this mystery girl Flack keeps telling me about?” she continued, a teasing smirk on her face, and Danny gave her a blank look, before turning and signaling the waiter

“Check, please.”

She grabbed his hand and pulled it down, “I’m serious, Danny. Who is she?

“You and Flack must be spending a lot of time together if all you can seem to talk about is my love life,” he said and Aiden rolled her eyes.

“Don’t change the subject, Messer, just answer the question.”

“I’m not changing the subject—”

“Yes, you are!” she cut him off.

“How am I changing the damn subject?”

“You’re changing the subject, by talking about how you’re changing the subject,” she said, starting to get frustrated and an evil grin crossed his face, “Just answer the damn question.”

“There is no girl.”

“There’s no girl?”

“Nope.”

“That’s bullshit.”

“How are you gonna tell me that that’s bullshit?” Danny said, giving her a look, “You going to take Flack’s word for that?”

“Face it Danny, Flack knows you better than anyone—”

“He likes to think he does, anyway.”

“—and the fact that there’s a girl happens to be written all over your damn face,” Aiden sighed, giving him a look, “Now who’s the damn girl?”

“No one.”

“No one?” Aiden frowned, “The girl is no one I know?”

“No, you know her. At least I think you do.”

“I know her but she’s no one.”

“Yes.”

There was a pause, and Aiden reached across the table to smack him on the shoulder. “You get one more chance to actually tell before I start to torture it out of you,” she said through gritted teeth, “No more of this cryptic shit. Who the hell is she?”

He mumbled something in response that Aiden couldn’t understand, and she frowned, “What was that?”

“Christina Finn,” he replied a little louder, and Aiden’s eyes went wide.

“Christina Finn?” He nodded. “As in the assistant district attorney, Christina Finn?” He nodded again. She continued to stare at him for a minute in disbelief.

“You and Finn?”

“You know Aiden, the whole gaped mouth look really isn’t that attractive on you,” Danny said, leaning back in his booth, his arms crossed in front of his chest.

“I’m sorry, Danny,” she said, giving him a grin, “I’m just having a hard time wrapping my head around this. You’re sleeping with Finn.”

“First of all, I’m not sleeping with her—”

“Not yet.”

He held up his finger in front of her, and the grin widened, “Secondly, what’s so bad about me and Christina?”

“Well—I just never thought you would become—beguiled—”

“Beguiled? Since when do you use words like beguiled?”

“Since now. Would you let me finish?” she said, giving him a look. He held up his hands wide, and she grinned before continuing, “—I just never thought you would become interested in someone like—her.”

“Well what’s wrong with her?”

“Nothing’s wrong with her, she’s just—never who I considered your type would be.”

“So I’m not allowed to like nice girls?”

“I’m not saying that. I just didn’t think you would like girls who were—too nice.”

“She’s too nice?”

“Maybe not too nice, she’s just a bit—anxious.”

“Anxious?”

“Danny—she threw up before she went into her first solo court case,” Aiden replied, “She can be a nervous wreck when she wants to be.”

“And this is bad, how?”

“You usually go for the more—assertive women.”

“You mean more like you?” he asked, and she looked up at him and shrugged.

“Maybe.” Then the look changed to a grin, “But then again, I am out of your league.”

“So you keep saying.”

“So this—thing—between you and Christina,” she sighed, starting to play with her coffee cup, “How serious is this?”

“At the moment, not very,” he replied, “We’re still trying to figure out what this ‘thing’ is.”

Aiden nodded, “If whatever it is works out—I’m happy for you. She’d be good for you.”

“Think so?” he asked. She knew that he wasn’t looking for her approval, and what she said wasn’t really going to change much, but she was his best friend. He needed her, if no one else, to tell him how things stood from her angle. He didn’t want her to lie to him, and she wasn’t going to.

“Yeah,” she nodded, “You need somebody a bit less assertive. She’ll balance you out.”

He nodded slowly, before taking another sip of his coffee, “You and Flack really have been talking a lot, haven’t you?”

“We are not going back to this again,” she replied, rolling her eyes.

“Oh, yes, we are,” Danny grinned, “We are not going to dig into me, and leave you out of it.”

“Danny, I really am not in the mood,” she replied, her eyes starting to scan the diner for the waiter.

“Too bad, I am,” Danny said, “So do you two talk every day on the phone, or does he actually head over to your place?”

“Check, please.”

Hee! I can so picture Aiden grilling Danny about his lovelife, but then when it comes time for reciprocation, it's "Check, please." Yeah. So loved. And I have to admit, Jen ([livejournal.com profile] weisy) turned me onto Flaiden so that's really the only pairing I support when it comes to Aiden. All in all, I really liked this. I can just picture this conversation happening. Danny and Aiden just had this chemistry together when they were on the show. They were such good friends.
