It had to be there. It had to be.

But she couldn’t find it. She and Hawkes had gone over every piece of evidence recovered from the case, but they couldn’t find a single scrap of evidence that was pointing to their suspect. Without the evidence, they didn’t have grounds for a search warrant, without a search warrant, they couldn’t search his property for the murder weapon, and without the murder weapon they had no case. But she knew that this was the guy that did it. She could feel it in her gut, but she couldn’t find the evidence, and that was what was frustrating her.

“Well, I have to admit,” Hawkes sighed, taking off his glasses and rubbing his eyes, “Whoever this guy was, he was good.”

“There has to be something here,” Lindsay replied, going over the crime scene photos again, “There’s always something.”

“Yeah, well, whatever it is, I don’t think we’re going to find it tonight.” She looked up at him in surprise, and he gave her a soft smile, “It’s late. Let’s go home for the night, and come back tomorrow, look at it with fresh eyes.”

“I’m not that tired,” she replied, looking back down at the evidence, “I think I’m gonna stay a little while longer.”

“Lindsay,” he said softly, coming around the side of the table, and taking her hand, “Go home at get some sleep alright? I bet Peluso’s probably wondering where you are.”

“I’ll call him—”

“Lindsay,” he said, giving her a look, and she sighed heavily before starting to pick up the photos.

“I’ll help you pack it up,” she whispered, giving in.

Brian looked up from the case file in front of him when Lindsay came into his apartment, looking a bit more exhausted than usual. He gave her a concerned look, and put the file down before walking over to her. “You alright?” he asked.

She turned to face him before walking over and wrapping her arms around his waist, burying her head in his chest. He rubbed her back gently before she looked back up at him.

“We got a case recently,” she sighed, running a hand through her hair, “And we thought we had everything—we put our all into this case—and we don’t have the evidence to put the guy away.”

“There’s something there,” he murmured softly, “You’ll find it.”

“I don’t know,” she said, pulling away from him and walking over towards one of the windows, “This is starting to look more and more like a dead end and—”

“It’s not a dead end,” he said, cutting her off, “Did you get dinner?”

“Brian—”

“Did you get something to eat?” he asked, and she shook her head no. “I’ll make you something.” He started to leave, walking out of the living room.

She frowned at that, before responding, “You can’t cook.”

He backtracked and stuck his head around the doorframe of the room, “Neither can you.”

She laughed, “Well, if you can’t cook, then how are you going to make me something?”

“Well, I happen to be an expert with the microwave.”

She laughed slightly before following him into the kitchen. He crouched down in front of the refrigerator, and frowned as he studied the shelves, “I seem to be out of leftovers.”

“Are you?” she grinned. He looked up at her and nodded.

“Yes.” He got up and looked in the freezer, before pulling out a box of Hot Pockets, “Take it or leave it.”

“I’ll take it,” she nodded, and he nodded with her.

“Good.” He popped them in the microwave, and leaned against the counter, waiting for them to finish, and she walked over and wrapped her arms around his neck, giving him a quick kiss.

“Thanks for trying to make me feel better,” she whispered.

“It’s what I’m here for,” he murmured.

“I’m glad you are,” she nodded, and he pulled her close, letting her rest her head on his shoulder again.

“You’ll get the guy. You just need to get some sleep, and look at it with fresh eyes.”

“That’s what Hawkes said,” she smiled.

“Well, you should listen to him. He’s a very, very smart man.”

“I know,” she nodded, before the beep! of the microwave went off. She pulled the Hot Pockets out of the microwave, before giving him another quick kiss, “Thank you for dinner.”

“Think you’ll stick around for a while afterwards?” he asked, watching her as she cut them open so they could cool off.

“I don’t know,” she said, grinning slightly, “I have to be into work early tomorrow.”

“Well, I won’t keep you up too late,” he replied, with a grin, before leaning in to kiss her again.

“You won’t?” she said with a smirk, and he shook his head.

“Well, I’ll try,” he grinned, and she nodded.

“I think I might, then.”

Where is my Brian Peluso? I would like a man like him, please. No guy has ever made me a Hot Pocket before, when I feel like I'm at a dead end. Man. :(

Anyway. Now that this pity party is over... I really liked this. It made me happy inside. He takes such good care of Lindsay, doesn't he? No less than she deserves.

On a side note, I think I'm starting to like OC stories. Usually I try to stick with canon characters, but this OC stuff you write -- it's growing on me. I'm thinking of making my own OC, but I'm not sure if it will be good or not.

i know. and i can't even watch brian on tv anymore, because they cancelled his show. *pouts* and he does take good care of lindsay. i'm very proud of him.

...if you do, and you want to bounce ideas off me, i'd be more than happy to talk stuff out with you. just let me know.

He's on 24, though. The actor, I mean. The character's name is Milo. Is there a complete series DVD set out for Conviction yet? You could buy that. Or rent it. Or lust after it.
