He was always alone.
If there was one thing that Alex Cabot ever really noticed about Mac Taylor, it was the fact that he was always alone, or in the company of one of his CSIs. He never seemed to be in the company of a woman or man—anyone, really—that seemed to be more than a colleague or a friend. He was self-sufficient and isolated, and while Mac’s standards seemed a bit high for the frame of mind she was trying to slip into, he would have to do for a brain to bounce off of.
Cabot most definitely did not share his solitary life. Even when she was emerged in her work, she was always surrounded by people. That was just the way she had always been. She had always been personable, always been friendly, sociable. There was nothing hermit-like about her, and she was hitting a dead end when trying to find the frame of mind for her victim. She needed to convince the jury why this person’s life is worth seeking justice for, and she couldn’t do that if she couldn’t understand them.
“Detective Taylor?” she asked, rapping on the door of his office. He looked up briefly, but went back to the folder in his hands.
“Counselor,” he said, “I wasn’t expecting to see you. We don’t even have a solid lead on the case yet.”
“It’s not about a new case; it’s about an old one,” she replied, before walking in and gesturing to the chair in front of his desk, “May I?”
“Please do,” he said, taking a seat himself.
“It’s about the Walker case. Do you remember it?”
He nodded, “Workaholic, killed in his office. He was murdered for the company.”
“Right,” she nodded, “He didn’t have any close friends or family other than his coworkers, so there’s no one to really testify on his behalf on what kind of person he was.”
Mac frowned, confused. He wasn’t sure what she was asking of him. “Do you want me to testify—”
“No! No,” she shook her head, “Because I can’t give the jury a witness to make the victim a real person for them, I need to do it myself. In order to do that, I need to understand him myself.”
“What are you asking?”
“In case you hadn’t noticed you and the victim are a bit alike in your—work habits,” she explained, “I was wondering if I could pick your brain about—” She paused, unsure of how to finish, “—you.”
Mac studied her for a moment before nodding slightly, “Anything I can do to help.”
“Thank you,” she nodded.
“How do you want to go about this?” he asked and she reached into her briefcase.
“I have some questions or situations. Just let me know your reaction to the situation, alright?”
Mac nodded before letting her proceed. He got up and started to walk towards the bookshelf in the far corner, “You know—I can’t say that these would be the victim’s reactions, only my own. Just because we have similar work habits—”
“Doesn’t mean you’ll react the same way,” Cabot finished for him, “I know. It is a bit of the blind leading the blind. But even if I have the slightest idea, it’ll be more helpful than you even know.”
Mac nodded, before turning back to her, “Alright. Where do we begin?”
