makeitstopjamie. Part of my Fork in the Road series. I saw the prompt small--and then overcompensation--and for some reason this is what popped into my head (tells you where my brain is, doesn't it?).
For Reference: CSI:NY and Conviction. If you have a question, don't be afraid to ask, I don't mind answering.
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters of CSI:NY or Conviction. They're owned by CBS and NBC.
“Men are so frustrating,” Christina complained as she sat down across from Jess at lunch, and Jess gave her a grin.
“Danny pull the plug again?”
“You know—I get the fact that he’s trying to be a nice guy and all, and that’s really sweet of him—but come on,” Christina shook her head, “I gave him the go-ahead, like, three weeks ago.”
Jess laughed, “And this is Danny we’re talking about, right? Mr. Hot Cop who’ll flirt with anything that flirts back?”
“One in the same,” Christina ran a hand through her hair, “—Maybe it’s me.”
“No!” Jess protested, “It’s probably anything but you.”
“Then why won’t he just come in when I ask him to?” Christina sighed, clearly confused, “I mean, if it’s not because he’s not attracted to me, then—”
“Maybe he’s just making sure that you care enough that you won’t end with him if things aren’t—you know—” Jess began, pausing slightly, “—up to par.”
Christina did a double take, and leaned in, “You think he’s—”
“Well, I mean,” the other woman giggled slightly, “It’s the only explanation. Maybe he’s just making sure you like him enough so that when you two finally do it, you’re not going to be so focused on his—short comings.”
Christina laughed, “I can’t believe we’re grown women and we’re having this conversation.”
Jess grinned before shaking her head, “Seriously though, it sounds like Messer is trying to—overcompensate for something. Maybe that’s it.”
Christina smirked, “I doubt it. Or else how would he get such a reputation?”
“The players are usually the ones that suck on that end,” Jess sighed, “It’s sad but true.”
Christina frowned for a moment, thinking, “You really think that’s it?”
“I’d put money on it,” Jess sighed, “I mean, I always suspected but I’ve never had the chance to really find out, you know?” Her lips quirked up into a smirk, “Still sure you want him?”
“It won’t matter much,” she shrugged, “But I still don’t get it. Usually the—less fortunate—are the ones more convinced of how good they are.”
“True,” Jess nodded, “Maybe he’s more modest than he puts himself off to be?”
“Maybe that’s it,” Christina sighed, “Oh, well. I guess I’ll find out sooner or later.”
“Guess so,” Jess replied, before pausing slightly, “Sure you want to?”
“Yes,” Christina shook her head, “As I said, it doesn’t make much of a difference.”
Jess leaned back and gave her a look, “And here I was thinking you were only with him for the sex.” Christina just glared at her before picking up the menu.

“Maybe you could come in for a little bit?” she asked, “Grab a cup of coffee?”
Danny hesitated as she turned around to face him, leaning back against her apartment door, “I don’t know, Chris—”
“OK, seriously,” she said, crossing her arms in front of her chest, “What’s your deal?”
He blinked at her, confused, “What’s my deal?”
“Danny—I want you to spend the night,” she laughed, “Do I have to spell it out for you in neon letters?”
He grinned, “No, no you don’t. I’ve been getting that from you.”
“So—what’s your deal?” she said, “Do you—not want to?”
“No!” he said abruptly, “I do. I—just want make sure this is the right thing. You know—for us.”
“Emotionally speaking?”
“Exactly.”
“So there’s no other—outside issues?”
“No.”
“No—performance issues?”
Danny laughed, “Definitely not.”
“Really?” Christina replied, quirking an eyebrow, “No—shortcomings you may be worried about.”
“My performance is the last think I’m worried about,” he said, moving in closer to her and she grinned, before whispering.
“Prove it.”
“Prove it?” he asked, giving her a smirk.
“Yup.”
Danny nodded for a minute before the smirk widened into a grin, “I think I’ll take you up on that cup of coffee.”
“I thought you would.”
